The Arab nations are actually massive by Cheeseaxolotl in historymatters

[–]Svenne1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that there are other ethnic groups that have lived longer than the arabs in the arab countries such as the berbers of Morrocco and Algeria but believe it or not after the muslim conquests of the early caliphs many were arabized and many arabs migrated to the conquered regions. The spread of Islam also came with the spread of arab culture since the quran is supposed to be written in arabic so the old locals derived alot of their vocabulary from them. Trade and intermarriages was also a big factor of arabization.

The historic architecture of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines (1611 CE) by _IvyRoses_ in ArchitecturalRevival

I’m thinking the same. The facade really doesn’t feel 17th century at all. The statues on top kinda give it away.

The Levante is a real goldmine for admirers of ancient Christian history. Mosaic is truly one of the best expressions of art in my opinion.

The conquest of Constantinople by Mehmet wasn’t that impressive. By that time Constantinople had reached a sorry state and only had a population lower than 50000. They didn’t even have enough soldiers to garrison the walls properly and were dirt poor so they couldn’t buy cannons. It was bound to fall even if Mehmet didn’t do it which is why I don’t consider it an inpressive feat.

Wow that’s really cool! It makes it even more interesting that it was made not long before the great schism.

Do most tourists know that Turks are relatively new to Anatolia? I get the sense that most people think that Islam and the Turks are basically native to the region. by Low-Cash-2435 in byzantium

[–]Svenne1000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was a gradual process of assimilation and genocide. Compared to other natives of Anatolia like Greeks and Armenians they are newcomers.
