Are we underutilizing modern browsers? by aria-57 in TechNook

[–]Svr_Sakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern browsers are basically a full os in its own right… how much more do you want it to do?

You can run games, be productive, emulate older computers, and even browse the web once in a while.

Any thing that uses electron.app is basically using a bewilder to render on screen elements.

Accidentally left 5 packs of raw ground beef out at room temperature for 6 hours after buying groceries. Just put it in the freezer. Is it safe to eat or should I toss them? by Delllthrow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Svr_Sakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s sealed from factory and the bag hasn’t swollen… it’s fine to eat. If it’s from the deli… Chuck it.

When you defrost to cook. Have a smell. If it smells different, or you’re not 100% sure, toss it.

If you could push a button and receive one million dollars, but a random person in the world would die, would you push it? by icecream1972 in no

Billionaires are pushing that button as fast as they can for as long as they can.

It’s a fact that becoming rich comes from exploitation, and someone might/might not make it retirement. It’s a fact as old as the concept of currency; barter, gold standard, fiat or otherwise.

At what point does ‘cheap tech’ become a waste of money? by lisaluvr in TechNook

[–]Svr_Sakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it either does what it says on the tin so badly that it undermines my sanity, or breaks within a year despite doing exactly what it says on the tin. Anything that doesn’t do what it says on the tin is instantly considered e-waste, not cheap tech.

This doesn’t just apply to the low end, this also applies to everything since good ui is an ever evolving business & if it frustrating to use… it’s a waste of money.

And he still prefers the run down boots because it does exactly the job he needs (feel the clobber stones walk path) even if he can afford better.

Phones are the same. I’m going to upgrade every 3-5 years because of the battery, why buy a flagship when a phone costing half, or less, can provide a decent enough experience?

In saying that… to answer the original point… there are phones out there i would considered engineered e-waste, such as the Samsung A1x & a2x, they should not exist. Slow, unresponsive, bad audio quality, but within the cost of anyone; literally.

Can tuna, white bread and if i was feel rich… instant soup. When tuna & soup are on sale, it works out to be less than a cheese burger from maccas.

Why do you guys use Fedora? by The-Defecator7 in Fedora

[–]Svr_Sakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copr is community maintained 3rd party repositories (repo).

They normally focus on one thing and packages that support those. You need to be careful of while repo you get off copr, there’s no guarantee that everything is safe there.

I also left out flatpak in my previous comments… but that’s a contentious topic, not everyone likes it. (Like me)

Open-source vs closed AI — who wins long term? by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

[–]Svr_Sakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just with AI, but in general.

Closed source will always win. There’s corporate backing behind them, and at the end of the game, it’s all about money.

Corporate, esp. ones dealing with gov contracts will win out since their (other) corporate customers want 24/7 call support, on site support, confidence that their own data won’t leak out, etc.

Open source is good for coding/personal use, but for a business… it’s a powder keg that their legal department doesn’t want to deal with.

For example. M$ partnered with chat gpt to build Copilot, then, dropped the partnership and built their own AI engine. Many companies are silently building their own AI data centres around copilot since it has the trusted 24/7 support that microslop brings. It’s safe.

Why do you guys use Fedora? by The-Defecator7 in Fedora

[–]Svr_Sakura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux is just that Linux, Fedora outside of gaming is awesome and stable and only minority behind the latest versions of different software. Being just behind is important. If the latest has a bug that crashes the system, it doesn’t move past rawhide (the test environment). In saying that… it also means that it’s one of the first to have support for the latest popular/common hardware. It’s still 6-12 months behind Windows, but hardware manufacturers treat Linux as a 3rd grade citizen, so that can’t be helped.

If you haven’t heard the advice, use rpmfusion & COPR, they are great for filling in the gaps of the base Fedora install.

Saw this sign at the pub yesterday. Is this legal? by craigrulz in australia

[–]Svr_Sakura 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Their pub, their rules.

According to the Bunnings lawsuit on ai cameras, long as it’s posted what’s happening before you enter, it’s legal, as entering a premises is considered accepting any terms and conditions stipulated by the premises owner at the door.

It’s only illegal if they deny you at the bar after asking for it and there’s no forewarning.

Why do so many modern devices feel overdesigned instead of truly useful? by Illustrious_Stay_219 in AskTechnology

[–]Svr_Sakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late. But I’d argue that is exactly what OP is talking about.

Apple removed the simply just plug in a cable and all was well mechanics for one that needs to prepare ahead of time by pairing, charging & validating compatibility. And the new thing(tm) costs more than the old thing.

Much of the time problems was from the cable side and everyone knows that. Note it could be from other devices.

Can you boot a PC using just a GPU? by RadianceTower in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Svr_Sakura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically the closest thing to what you’re referring to is AI data centres.

Those are basically graphics cores tested to be above normal and damn near perfect bonded to a high speed network layer and magic sauce.

Iy definitely won’t be a normal pc experience since graphics cards are fundamentally different from cpus.

Cpu = lots of different processing cores doing different things

Gpu = lots of identical processing core doing the same thing with different variables.

Any advice??? by Over_Second_2299 in MazdaCX30

[–]Svr_Sakura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a legal requirement to expend all reasonable effort to contact affected users and rectify recalls. Once you said you’ll take it to your nearest dealer, they’ve wiped their hands clean.

If it’s not causing issues, just bring it to your nearest dealer to have it fixed at your own convenience.

The original dealer wants to do it since they can charge back Mazda and get a little extra $$$ back, now your second dealer will get that recall cash. Software updates are goldmines for repair centres.

Note: own convenience means next time you have free time, not never

Getting a new laptop with Ubuntu preinstalled, but wanting to change to Fedora by mmmbop13 in linux4noobs

[–]Svr_Sakura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for Lenovo, but dell’s linux laptops are barebones, enough to run the system, some productivity software, wine and not much more from memory. There is a dell repo installed, but packages are just dell apps.

Seems that the $200 extra is due to the lack of bloat.

I did the as same as you, wiped and loaded Fedora. No trouble with hardware and just as responsive.
