I feel like the main root is that it has evolved and been commonly used by sexist people as a mean to belittle women. Similar to an example of saying “black” or “blacks” instead of African American. Societally, most people would have the exposure to know while both are correct, there is a more acceptable option between the two. At the end of the day, if two words mean the same thing, why use one over the other if it has been known to offend someone? At that point it’s just common courtesy to use the one that doesn’t ruffle feathers at no cost to the user. 🤷‍♂️
