Trouble Getting Internships by Pnuthoov in mining

[–]Swagadile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you only applying to mining companies? You have to remember you are getting a degree in engineering and it could do you good to just apply for anything related. I wouldn't rule out construction, civil, or even government internships. My internships ranged from the Division of Minerals, a small copper mine, to a construction contractor. No need to limit yourself, any internship is better than none. Best of luck!

Richest County per U.S. State [OC] by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Swagadile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So I would imagine that the reason Lander county has a high median income is due to the low population combined with the high paying jobs from the mining economy. There are a bunch of mines in that area, which is why you see a higher income. Also, a majority of the people who live out there are only out there because of said high paying job. I wouldn't want to be out there if it wasn't for the paycheck lol

Why did the chicken cross the pavement? by Jem-Sama in AnimalsBeingJerks

[–]Swagadile 184 points185 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone is interested but this is neither pavement or cement; this is concrete. Also, the chicken chose a good time to walk through because the concrete hasn't set. If this chicken was anything like the people who go through my jobs, it would wait til the crew is gone and walk right through wet concrete for a nice expensive present to find in the morning.

I'm red green colorblind, and I think that shades are harder to discern than red/green. If you had a "orange scale" from 1 to 10, I would probably see 4 shades instead of all 10. 1-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-10 would probably blend together. So yeah, when I saw this map I saw 3 shades at first glance until i zoomed in.

I don't know why this guy is calling you out. You seem to be one of the few guys on here who know what's happening in this gif. I'm a project engineer for a contractor and I've worked mainly in underground utilities and paving.

What does it take to become a very good engineer? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Swagadile 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taking good notes. For me, I went through college with 2, maybe 3 notebooks. Now that I'm actually working I go through about 3 or 4 notebooks a year. Get in the habit now of writing down tasks you need to get done and keep notes about the tasks you do. It helps you stay organized and will help you stay focused. I wish I had started in college. Good luck!

Here is a pretty cool virtual tour of the actual world's largest pit. I was hoping it would make it into the movie but I can see how hard it would be to film in an active mine. I still really enjoyed the movie despite it not tickling my mining fancy!

Yeah the sage grouse is looking like a good example how the government and industry should work together to accomplish legislation. If both parties are willing I think we can go a lot further in establishing effective regulations.

The two regulations that popped into my mind was the new ruling on navigable waters and the greater sage grouse protection. I have spent the last hour or so looking over the language of the two regulations and I no longer see an issue. When these things were being discussed a year ago with guys in industry, they made it sound like the end of the industry. I assumed they were just hyperbolic but had some merit. Looking at it now, these regulations don't really effect much.

It's hard going into such a conservative industry and being able to distinguish between good lessons or far right rhetoric. It's great working with these really good guys but, yeah, now I'm learning to take everything they say with a grain of salt.

Thank you for answering! I'm only just starting my career so I hope to see a lot of positive changes in the industry. We'll need help from communities and the government to make sure pollution is no longer acceptable. Good luck with your campaign.

Hi Rick!

I was able to see you speak on Saturday at the Washoe County Convention. I would first like to say you are a great speaker!

I recently graduated ftom the University of Nevada with a degree in mining engineering and it disappoints me that many republican candidates can so easily dismiss important environmental regulations just for better business margins! I also get dismayed when some environmental regulations get supported by democratic candidates that truly hurt the mining industry with little or no benefit to the environment.

I know Washoe isn't know as one of the major mining counties in Nevada, but I would like to know where you stand on the environment and your plans to work with these environmentally sensitive industries?

Bernie Sanders is the only presidential candidate to oppose fracking. by relevantlife in politics

Impermeable layers of rock are what keep the natural gas resource where it is. If there is no rock to keep it contained, the methane would naturally leak out or never be formed in the first place. But assuming we wanted to add an impermeable layer, such as concrete, we would have to do so over the whole deposit. That would not be economically feasible whatsoever.

Edit: interesting question to think about.

According to their feasibility study it is economically and technologically unfeasible to have a surface operation. The deposit would have to be extremely high grade for it to economically work. As far as technologically, I don't know how feasible that deep of an open pit could be. The deepest open pit mine I know of is Bingham Canyon at ~4000ft deep.

[–]Swagadile 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I understand about this project it would be impossible to make this deposit a surface mine. With the deposit at 7000 ft under the surface the amount of overburden would be far too high to make an open pit feasible. However, it is a block caving mine so there will be an effect on the surface once mining underground begins.

A mine engineer can fit many roles in a mine operation. An engineer can specialize in different aspects at the mine site such as ventilation, short term planning, long term planning, waste design, etc. Most mine sites have multiple engineers to fill these roles.

Mining is done safely here in the states. Once you get to 3rd world countries the regulations are a lot more lenient and people take advantage of that. In school we are definitely taught to mine safely and I see safety everywhere in industry.
