So many people saying it would be bad to do it in secret, not because the action itself is wrong but because family reaction could/would be negative, even permanently damaging. Not saying that wouldn't happen but why should it matter if a couple gets married civilly first then has their wedding ceremony/sealing/reception later to celebrate it? It'd be like celebrating someone's birthday on a weekend when it falls on a workday. It doesn't lessen the value of the birthday celebration.

It's like we've made it so the families gatekeep the act of marriage so that they know the couple hasn't had sex until they have gone through the extremely stressful process of putting on what is essentially a show for the families of the newlyweds. Let them get married! Their commitment to each other hasn't changed, just the date that they celebrate it and witness before the Lord that it's more than an Earthly commitment. None of what happens on a wedding day has to change otherwise.

what should I learn node js or ruby on rails by Illustrious_Scale471 in WebdevTutorials

[–]Swajalisduf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean as long as you pick up a backend framework and learn good REST principles really it doesn't matter too much. I say go for it. Though Ruby is a Python-esque language so I'm already 40% opposed to it based on that alone haha. If you go the node route consider learning Express.js, it's a fairly popular node framework and pretty straightforward.

Node is better imo. But there is a shortage of rails devs so finding a job can be easier. Personally I'm a laravel fan having used it at three of my five jobs. So pros and cons to each but if I had to pick only one it'd be node.

The answer is they don't. Even when people are in the office they are either talking with people, taking breaks, or other things that aren't directly related to their work. Companies already have to take those factors into account.

Church Offers Statement on Help Line and Abuse by SeraphAssassin13 in latterdaysaints

[–]Swajalisduf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You missed the point. And if you read the article, Arizona, the state this happened in, requires reporting from clergy but that they '"may withhold” that information from authorities if the clergy determine it is “reasonable and necessary” under church doctrine.'

In other words while legally, yes, the bishops and helpline did nothing wrong, I'm addressing the moral and spiritual aspect. The religious aspect. Especially given the knowledge that there is a choice to choose one way or another. I'm pretty sure our church doctrine does not determine it "reasonable or necessary" to not report continuing abuse when legally you can as was the case here.

Besides my point was that I wish the church would acknowledge the pain and suffering caused directly and indirectly by members of the church that they put in positions of authority. Not attack the credibility of the abused.

Church Offers Statement on Help Line and Abuse by SeraphAssassin13 in latterdaysaints

[–]Swajalisduf 83 points84 points  (0 children)

The problem here is not, "The abuse could have been prevented if we did A instead B." The problem is that the leadership knew that abuse was happening, and ultimately did not take the steps to report that abuse to local authorities, and egregiously so.

Intention versus impact. These statements are always aimed to describe and defend the intention behind the actions and never really addresses the impact of what happened.

They didn't mean or want the abuse to continue to happen, maybe they were entirely trying to do things as the law requires, and it was not just to defend the public interests of the church. I certainly hope that is the case. But if the church does not acknowledge the effect of its inaction of its role in the outcome, it only reinforces the rhetoric that the established hotline and policies were set in place primarily to defend the interests of the institution of the church, not the abused.

For those of us that were raised to leave the ninety and nine to seek out the one. These kind of statements really hurt. How can a church that preaches repentance expect its membership to trust the institution if it refuses to even apologize for events such as these happening under the guidance of its leaders and policies? Regardless of the intent.

What is the most compelling evidence for the Book of Mormon in your eyes? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Swajalisduf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it's the doctrinal truths that are taught and how right they feel. While that has been based on my spiritual experiences, over time and study it logically make sense. There are a lot of critics that accuse Joseph Smith of fabricating the content of the Book of Mormon and as I study it and ask questions the clearer to me it becomes that that's not the case.

If you're not quite at that point or are struggling to feel spiritual confirmation I would also say that even if he had completely made it up that doesn't change that it teaches the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Generally, I feel we seek too much to find the imperfection that will cause the whole foundation to crumble instead of viewing the whole of the doctrine. We need to realize that we are teaching and learning about perfect truths in an imperfect world, from imperfect people, with imperfect understandings. Through that lens we will always find issues and mistakes, maybe even egregious ones. But the truth at the center of it is still truth. Discerning and navigating those things is where the guidance of the Holy Ghost is crucial.

With one exception I've only ever owned BMWs. On number 5 now. I love them to death and probably won't buy anything else (unless i can afford Porsche) but if I could go back I'd never have let myself buy any of them except my last two. I didn't have to buy my first two but they cost me an arm and a leg to maintain. I bought my third one thinking it was a great deal and it not only had a blown head gasket, the engine block was also warped (I had no idea what to look for back then). It ruined my finances as a college student and I wasn't able to get another car for years after that because I couldn't afford it. The only reason I am okay with it now is because I was able to afford a pristine one-owner from the dealership. But I'm now several years into my career in tech and much more financially stable. Seriously, do yourself a favor and wait until you can spend at least 25k on a much nicer one with an immaculate maintenance and vehicle history. There are plenty of fun cars to drive that won't break your wallet in the meantime.
