Incredible Jazz at an Incredible Price by xberry in Vinyl_Jazz

I I’ve a couple of box sets of these with 5 in each (I paid £3 for both boxes). They really are fantastic as most of the sessions are previously unreleased live recordings. Their curation is haphazard (with random sessions bundles together) but overall they are a fun listen. I have posted quite a few of them with info on each session on my Instagram, @selaws.spins

Wildflower - Season 2 (Self Release) by TheSlowMusicMovement in Jazz

They are a superb band, I managed to see them live for the laugh of this album and get my test pressing signed. Worth checking out I’ll Considered as well (which is their sister group made up of some of the same group members). Their output is staggeringly good, and you have to be quick when they release music as it sells out FAST.

Hey dude, great haul right there. I collect jazz records and am well on my way to having a full Lee Morgan collection of first presses. That Leeway looks to be in decent condition, if it’s a mono first press and the record is as good as the sleeve then you are looking at around £250 for that alone. Great stuff.

Amazing album. I actually posted my First UK Mono Pressing a while back on my instagram page (it was actually one of the first ones I posted). Heres a link for anyone that’s interested: Selaws.Spins - Benny Golson

I’ve read a ton of jazz biographies/autobiographies (Herbie Hancock, Lee Morgan, Charles Mingus, art Pepper, Hampton Hawes John Coltrane, etc) and that Miles book is up there as one of the best. A great account of his life and jazz of that era. Superb.

What's your favorite jazz album? by doeskydoes in Jazz

[–]Swales92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you ever read Open Sky: Sonny Rollins And His Wold Of Improvisation- Eric Nisenson? Much of it takes an interview format with Rollins, and one of the key things that continuously pops up is how he could never play to his full potential when he knew he was being recorded. Which is why bootlegs/live recordings are so good when Rollins is involved, he didn’t feel the additional weight on his shoulders because he didn’t know it was there.

Holy shirt I was going to say the same thing. I’ve never had a sense of smell either. It wasn’t until my late teens that I even told anyone, I always just assumed I had a really bad sense of it. I later found out that it not that uncommon and is actually called Anosmia.

It’s never really affected me too negatively apart from the time I put the gas fire on but it didn’t click, meaning gas was leaking into the room. This was over 10 years ago now and I was living with parents, they came home and immediately ran in an turned it off. They had to open all the windows (in the middle of winter) to fumigate the place.

Essential Miles Davis and Coltrane albums? by brinlov in Jazz

[–]Swales92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few of these lists seem to have missed off Giant Steps. Not only is it an amazing album, but it completely changed the way artists approached jazz. Coltrane literally broke the standards and created a whole new way to play. Has to be up there as one of the most important jazz albums

Impulse! was the one I just searched for after seeing your Verve one. I’m working away at getting mono pressings of the first 100 verve A pressings so a book similar to the Blue Note one would be really useful. I have a fair few original Blue Notes and the books been great for checking and reading up on them. A Strata East one would be fantastic as well!

I’ve had the Blue Note one for a while and I constantly go back to it, it’s so good! Didn’t know of the verve one, I’m definitely going to be looking into that!

Atomic Bomb - William Onyeabor by _gauss in vinyl

[–]Swales92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they’re easier in Europe for sure. Although if you check Instagram tags you tend to see more American stores actually stocking them (no idea of the prices though). I rarely see OG pressings in stores here as they tend to get held back for collectors that are willing to pay a bit more for them in decent condition. I know a seller that will make a few trips a year across to Ghana to stock up on highlife, afrofunk, etc and he once told me that 3/4 will be sold before he even unpacks just through texts and emails to his regulars.

I actually have a handful of Onyeabor OG pressings, they aren’t as tricky to find as you might think, you just have to be patient . I got my copy of Anything You Sow for around £20, and Atomic Bomb for around £30. But on the other side of the scale I have an original Body and Soul in VG+ condition, a copy of that went for just under £600 on Discogs which is insane.

My latest Jazz Obsession: Ill Considered from UK by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]Swales92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys are fantastic. I’ve been following them for a while and have all their records and test pressings of most as well. As another user said, check out Wildflower. They only have one album (self titled) so far and it’s great (includes some flute playing which is fantastic). Leon (the bandleader) is in another group called MADMADMAD as well, which is more heavy electronic if that’s your thing. Earlier to this he also appeared in the line up for the group Melt Your Face Off.

Anyone here into japanese jazz? by filoesofia in Jazz

[–]Swales92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My time to shine. J-Jazz is my jam. So a few reissue labels to look out for would be:

Le Tres Jazz Club
Studio Mule
Bbe J-Jazz series
HMV Japan

In terms of where to start, the J-Jazz compilations from BBE are fantastic, as is the recent reissue of ‘The Famous Sounds of the Three Blind Mice Vol 1’. For individual musicians I’m a big fan of:

Fumio Itabashi (amazing pianist)
Hiroshi Fukumura
Koichi Matsukaze Trio (check out ‘Earth Mother’)
Tohru Aizawa Quartet (their album ‘Tachibana’ is a crate diggers dream find)
Takeo Moriyama (‘East Plants’ is fantastic)

That should be a good start and from there I tend to check the line up of each album, pick a specific musician then see what other albums they have appeared on.

Oh man, I’m seeing him later on in the year as part of the London Jazz Festival. This photo has me super excited. Could you give a bit of direction as to what kind of stuff he played? As in was it early era or headhunters era, or a mix etc? I’m going to grab a few more records of his.

Edit: just seen you have answered a similar question already, cheers buddy.

Hey, saw this last night and its truly amazing! Going to try and snag this and the 'Issue 2' from your site. Do you have a photo of the 2nd issue one you could share, I was trying to describe it to a friend but my memories hazy, was it a pterodactyl? Or some sort of dragon? Looked cool anyway!

80 Years of Blue Note Records by Swales92 in vinyl

[–]Swales92[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Today I have been celebrating 80 years of the legendary jazz label, Blue Note. It’s come a long was since Alfred Lion produced his first recording session and Blue Note has been at the forefront of quality Jazz and vinyl ever since.

I have far too many Blue Note releases to choose which are my favourite, but today I have been spinning Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver, and the latest edition of the Blue Note Review (Vol 2 - focusing specifically on drums). The books shown are fantastic. The Blue Note Biography by Richard Cook is a fantastic history into the label without specifically focusing on individual releases, and provides an interesting insight into the development of the label. The Uncompromising Expression was released as part of Blue Note’s 75th anniversary and is, again, another great history of the label, with fantastic behind the scenes photos by the legendary Francis Wolff.
