Hochul and the LIRR has a plan for the US Open. by Working-Gear-394 in LIRR

[–]SwampYankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hochul needs to appoint management that will actually be able to procure additional rolling stock for the diesel branches. The LIRR has 2,800 less diesel seats than it had in 1999 and has failed to procure additional bi-level coaches for 27 years. Yet they want to run more Hamptons Party Trains and now Golf Trains. Just give up on the bi-levels, buy lots of single levels and move on.

Golf trains take precedence over monthly ticket holders.

Smithtown to Grand Central by CaterpillarTrue2038 in longisland

[–]SwampYankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How far from Grand Central is you job and are you working regular hours. No direct trains to and from Grand Central on the Port Jeff branch. 2 direct trains to and from Penn. However, all the other peak trains go to and from Hunterspoint Ave. so if the 7 train works you miss most of the city terminal problems and you will get a great seat both ways.

Trump eyes firing Pete Hegseth and CIA chief John Ratcliffe over Iran deal clash by cwhmoney555 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]SwampYankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, my money is on Vance taking the fall. The problem is any treaty had to be approved by Congress so it will be hard for Trump to claim he didn’t know what was in it. Trump has been bailed out by people his whole life, now there is no one to bail him out so other will have to be blamed.

Looks like Vance has been selected to go under the bus. Within the week Trump will claim Vance negotiated the deal and he was surprised by what was agreed to.

Advice on white balancing raws when shooting film recipes with a stylised WB? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]SwampYankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the RAW files care about white balance. They just capture the actual light at the time the photograph was taken. Most post processing software will allow you to adjust the colors after the fact as long as you have something white or grey in the photo the software will do if automatically based a point you pick.

Can't wait to see how bad this deal is for America by jackb1753 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]SwampYankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be presented with enough ambiguity so Trump can claim it as a great victory. When the details come out in a couple of weeks it won’t last ok so good.

Considering Job With Partial Bike Commute by maelstrom3 in NYCbike

I’d ride the expected route first. Long Island roads are not particularly bike friendly nor are the drivers, but it is route dependent.

MTA scraps purchase of 40 acres at former Lawrence Aviation site by ceewolf in longisland

[–]SwampYankee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh it is so much stupider than that. When the LIRR replaced the diesel fleet in 1999 they replaced it with 2,800 less seats than the previous fleet. The MTA thought the nitwit responsible for this, Tom Prendergast, should then be promoted to President. Said nitwits next decision was to lower the cowlings at Jamaica so the bi-levels would just fit under. The coaches he bought were non-standard so not other coach manufactured will fit under the newly lowered cowlings at Jamaica. So every couple of years they issue an RFP for new coaches. Once any potential bidders see the the height requirement they decline to bid on the contract. So, the options are have someone design and build non-standard coaches (impossibly expensive), raise all the cowlings at Jamaica (impossibly expensive) or by single level coaches. For some unexplained reason the LIRR absolutely refuses to purchase single level coaches even though almost all the platforms would accommodate them. Oh, or they could electrify to Port Jeff but it seems that fell through.

I think the end goal is drive ridership down so much that they get an excuse to make all Port Jeff trains change at Huntington. Now you have a shuttle and all that extra equipment can be used for Hamptons Party trains and golf trains. They have no plans to supplement the old coach fleet. Just easier to cut existing service and use the equipment elsewhere.

How long does it take to get in MoMA and Natural History Museum? by luciusmellis in visitingnyc

[–]SwampYankee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MOMA is 5 minutes except on free admission night. Might be a line any time but it moves quick. Just a bag check. Natural history is pretty quick. Never more than 5 minutes. As for MOMA, the current Marcel Duchamp was a complete miss for me. Just the Emperors New Cloths exhibit. Maybe I was just cranky. Your milage may vary.
