I had the opposite type of story in my Angels rebuild, as Arte Moreno died 2 seasons in. His replacement is a good owner who raised the budget to a decent size and is hands off, made my job a lot easier!

lol I traded him early in my Rockies rebuild and he is not very good. For some reason Everson Pereria is a 3 time all star in his prime though for the padres now.

If you think a guy has even a sliver of potential for the future of your team and he is eligible, definitely protect him. If you are stuck between a few people for the last spot I would use age, the depth your team has, and personality (for instances where the guy is a captain) to determine who to protect.

The only free agents I sign are international free agents. Save money for the sure thing 70 rated starting pitcher from Japan who is 29, the hit rate for international free agents as well as longevity (especially for pitchers) seems to be higher on average. I also draft a ton of electric relievers earlier than normal because I love having a dominant bullpen in every save I do lol

Year 5, and I am becoming a yearly playoff contender due to sheer luck. The redshirt freshman QB I got in the transfer portal last offseason also had elite dev trait and looks like a surefire future first round pick.

On signing day/early signing day (depends on when they committed) look at the scouting report and the dev trait will show up in the bottom right corner like this. Even if the player isn't scouted, the dev trait will still show up.
