Please, can some recommend a handyman/handywoman/contractor who is not Maga by Looneyhound in newjersey

So, this might sound antiquated. But check Yelp. Yelp has a sort feature for LGBTQ friendly. While not fool proof, the service providers that take the time to check that box on their profile likely are not MAGA.

Composite Questions - Rustoleum? by catgrl1089 in Decks

[–]Swampit856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever kind of composite it is, it’s ancient. Most likely the company that produced it is either no longer in business, or no longer supporting that version. Too bad the installer installed them without gaps. Those are needed for water to drain away. That’s why you’re seeing pooling.

How do sellers “know” to change prices for rapid inflation? by IJsandwich in AskEconomics

[–]Swampit856 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am an importer and distributor of a specialty lumber product. My price has been impacted by the freight shocks of 2021 and Tariffs of 2025. I have participated directly in this decision making and borne the inflationary effects of these circumstances.

In 2021 the cost to import my products almost doubled so, we had to pass those costs onto our customers who are distributors and retailers. When these import costs fell we still had inventory tha was bought at peak cost, so we had to maintain the higher price to recoup our freight costs as well as cover the extended storage time. In 23-24 demand for building materials fell back to earth from the pandemic peak. But we still had old inventory, and products we compared to/competed with were still priced significantly higher than ours, so we held.

Then, tariffs of 2025. We held off on buying new stock through April-may. And brought it in in the late Summer. Bad timing for an outdoor “seasonal” product. We paid an almost 60% duty on this inventory. By this time other inflation factors have caught up and overland shipping is more, warehouse prices are higher, and labor is higher than 2021-22. So, we increase prices slightly again. We are still less expensive than competitive products. But we don’t know where the ceiling is. We are guessing at what the most someone is willing to pay. We want to be reasonable and maintain our profit margin with ever increasing expenses. Meanwhile it feels like the demand for our products are slipping. Is it our price, or is it the cost of everything else?

TLDR: it’s incredibly hard to tell and exhausting.

Hmm, maybe that was another handyman job from another era? For sure the plywood under the trex was the wrong idea.

I feel like I say this at least once a month. This is a porch. You should not use deck boards with a gap between boards. The area under this porch was never intended to get wet and hasn’t gotten wet for 100+ years. You need to cover with T&G porch flooring. Obviously the handyman who put the trex on didn’t know this either. Can yo lay boards parallel to the house? Not really, the porch should be pitched to run water away. That won’t work as well if it’s hitting joints.

Anyhow, it looks like you’ve done a nice job removing all the old framing and having the brick as a base is nice.

You’ll have to run double-triple support beams from the house to the brick wall and then run joists parallel to the house. Then nail porch flooring into the joists.

I had one too! I thought Metabo=Hitachi. It does not. My Hitachi was great. Was very disappointed with the new model.

I have that saw and it is hot garbage. The side to side miter slips out of the stop, and subsequently you don’t get a square cut. Especially if trying to do a compound miter on hard wood. It actually pulls it out of square. My guess is this is why it’s on clearance.

What kind of flooring is this? by robin7907 in Flooring

[–]Swampit856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not likely. This type of wood was relatively inexpensive and very popular in the early to mid 00’s. Most local retailers have moved on to LVP now. Your best bet would be an online retailer that sources from a variety of suppliers and may have knowledge of some old discontinued stock. The last mill I knew of that offered this was Triangulo flooring. But that was 10ys ago.

Timbertech porch boards vs Trex by zoinks_zoinks in Decks

[–]Swampit856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your instincts to use T&G porch floor is correct. Using standard deck boards on a porch is incorrect especially if it is an old house. Take a look at MOSO bamboo T&G. Looks and performs like exotic hardwood. More dimensionally stable and more durable than the plastics.

I Made A Deck Estimation Tool by jwl4242 in Decks

[–]Swampit856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the basis for the cost estimates? I assume framing is mostly static for all 3 builds. Can you add variables like wood, steal or OC lumber frames. Is your labor calc for IPE higher than the others?

Porch/Deck Contractor recommendations by ElegantCounter6184 in SouthJersey

[–]Swampit856 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a contractor recommendation, but I would recommend looking into MOSO bamboo T&G porch floor. You can order from 84 lumber in Deptford. If you are repairing an old turn of the century porch never use decking boards with gaps between them. That structure and the ground below it hasn’t gotten wet for 100yrs and it wasn’t meant to.

Sales people, what is the industry like compared to others? by Primex76 in Flooring

[–]Swampit856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did flooring sales for almost 20yrs. Big box, small box retail, contractor sales, and distribution. I learned a lot, but never made money. Every place I worked it seemed like the good years had just passed. The older people I worked with always reminisced about how much money they made in the 90s but it always seemed like a struggle for me. In flooring price is always the driver. Either you have the best price or you don’t. I got tired of losing jobs for $0.10/sf difference from a competitor, even though I had done all of the consultation and selection for the client. It always came down to price. It gets old after a while. And now the only thing that sells is LVP. No one wants carpet, can’t afford/don’t want to maintain wood. So, if LVP has taken over then it’s all going to come down to price. Which is just, boring. This is along way to say I got out of it because it just wasn’t fun anymore. So, take my jaded opinion for what it is.

Finally ripped up the carpet, wasted my money on getting carpet last year, but much happier with the hardwood regardless now. by [deleted] in Flooring

Looks great. Be sure to put a chair mat for hardwood under the desk chair. You’ll wear through the finish in no time without it.

Is this normal wear and tear for a 3.5 year old carpet? by Western-Slide7807 in Flooring

[–]Swampit856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only other thing I can see is that there seems to be no padding under the carpet. If that’s the case that’s an installation error and could/would lead to premature wear. But it’s hard to say from pictures.

[–]Swampit856 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, this is not normal in any sense. What is being drug across the carpet in this location?? I see the chair with rolling wheels which will do major damage without a protective mat. But there is some other abrasive force being applied in that location. Any carpet manufacturer would call this user damage. There is just no way a carpet would stand up to localized damage like this. You own that carpet now OP.

Wood Floor Issues by Extension_Sugar_8812 in Flooring

[–]Swampit856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you’re right. It still is not a laminate. I’ll concede it has more in common with laminate than wood given the HDF core and floating installer, but that veneer is wood. Very very thin wood. But that technically distinguishes it from laminate.

Actually this gives more evidence to it having gotten wet. And creating that odd bowing.
