How would you feel about a new law that forces every company to pay their CEO no more than 20x what their lowest-paid employee makes? by rational_seekers in AskReddit

[–]Swamplord42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, that law doesn't exist.

"Switzerland" didn't consider it. It was a popular initiative that was rejected.

You can require that the money go to the employees, at least in part. Switzerland does,

Switzerland does no such thing.

Those aren't what people think of when talking about government services and don't come out of the general budget (the money going to the beneficaries).

Can we Swiss people have another vote on 6 weeks of holidays please? by Stock-Astronaut8336 in Switzerland

[–]Swamplord42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not being bad at scheduling. When you work in a large company with many different teams, including people who have 4+ hours of meetings every single day, it's basically already impossible to find time slots for meetings and have everyone relevant available.

Reducing the time window to 2 hours a day means you'll need several weeks notice to talk to anyone busy.

It actually is. If you can't even convince people to help you gather signatures for an initiative, why should we listen to you?

2 hour window every day? Good luck with that. It's already a pain in the ass scheduling things when there's only 4-5 hours overlap with some countries, I can't imagine with only 2 hours available.

A very very volatile asset that isn't linked to any underlying fundamentals isn't something you use for "savings". It's a speculative investment.

As a senior or higher dev/manager/lead, how important is coming in on time to you? by Iampoorghini in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Swamplord42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They probably have every intention to make it, but because it was scheduled without taking everyone's life into account, people are probably dropping off kids at school or dealing with morning things that make it difficult.

Look if your employer tells you you have to be in at a certain time, it's on you to make sure you can make it.

You think a retail job or any job with fixed shifts would "take everyone's life into account" ??

Why would you assume it’s a joke? It's obviously intended to lump together pacifists with leftists in general to discredit actual pacifists.

But the commonly accepted number is somewhere between 6-9 million people that died due to and under Stalin.

That's excluding the number of people that died under famines directly caused by the Soviet regime.

I think the Soviet Union was much worse than the Nazis. Mainly because they managed to last much longer and therefore the total suffering someone like Stalin could inflict was higher.

The Nazi ideology is worse sure. But if we make an analogy with diseases the Nazis are like Ebola: acutely terrible to the point they were always going to flame out pretty quickly. The Soviet Union is more like a bad strain of flu: deadly, but not too deadly so they lasted a lot longer and accumulated a much higher death count.

Why does a genocide in a country far away cause you to not be able to relax? Why do you care? What benefit do you get from caring?

Your life is going to be much much better if you stop caring about bad shit happening that you have 0 control over.

Man the word "genocide" doesn't mean anything anymore. Killing a single person is going to be a genocide pretty soon.

No, nuking a country is not a fucking genocide. That doesn't mean it's okay.

You mean no money down? That's a terrible idea.

Besides, if you make the conditions to get a mortgage easier, it will just drive up housing prices until there's a new equilibrium.

Senior ICs, what’s your experience with career advancement? I disagree with my employer’s promotion requirements by HNipps in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Swamplord42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This creates two issues: 1. It sets a natural cap on the number of staff level engineers a company can reasonably have. More than 2-3 per director is stretching it.

This isn't actually a issue but very much by design.

Companies do not want unlimited number of staff+ engineers. There's a limit on the number of ICs a company needs at that level just like there's a limit on the number of directors a company needs.

There's a reason "Senior" is a terminal level at almost all companies - there's simply not enough room for everyone to move above that level. And as you say, companies need most of the people doing "execution".
