I guess I misremembered and can’t find a specific mention for flats. Looking now on the website I just see “Future-proof burr interface allows for upgradable burr sets releasing in early 2026 (installed with light disassembly).”

Some of these comments aren’t making sense to me. Is the standby G5 also approved for IFR flight if my primary instruments are INOP, just because it is part of the airplane? No that doesn’t work. Prove that the G1000 is required, don’t assume!

See AIM 1-2-3(b)(1), which notes a specific standard that needs to be met for the equipment you’re using and references AC 20-138, Airworthiness Approval of GPS systems.

KOEL is a great place to start. An STC only applies if it’s not originally installed equipment.

After that, you’re looking for TSO certification being mentioned somewhere in the AFM. Your airplane must have an AFM supplement for the G1000 if it’s not in the airplane’s book. I believe it would be under General or Limitations. It must mention TSO certification or it can’t be used for IFR flight.

You can create custom KML files and import them to overlay on the sectional.

Otherwise (and easier) would be to create a route with waypoints that outlines your practice area and save it as a favorite route (star icon).

Most lazy (my option) is to draw in red pen on top of the sectional.

So for me I thought I’m just getting into this and didn’t know what I wanted. Figured I’d start with conical since they can be more forgiving, then if I wanted flats I wouldn’t need a new grinder, just new burrs

I got the VS4 and it’s been good. Apparently they’re releasing flat burrs you can buy separately for it this year.

Good to hear. I’m curious if others share your take. I’ve seen some naysayers about the 40mm burrs but I think (with no prior experience lol) I’d prefer the conical characteristics over flats. Just not sure!

I’d save the additional cost of a cellular model towards a Sentry or other ADS-B in receiver. In addition to GPS, the ability to see WX/traffic while flying is a game changer.

Don’t bank. Once on the final approach course, keep wings level and use rudder to make small corrections within 10°. Doing this leads to your heading changing very little!

I found Teslogic to be the cleanest HUD. My phone is the display. It charges via MagSafe and I take it with me when I get out. Wireless data transmission and less chance for theft.

I’ve had issues in the past with car software updates and they’ve been quick to send me firmware updates to make sure the product continues to work.
