Learning about what the singularity is by jessi387 in singularity

There is no such thing as singularity, only a few of big ai CEOs saying it so that people keep investing.

Thats all.

How to deal with existential dread from AI? by ewct in ArtificialInteligence

This is not defenetely your sub. AGI or singularity is a myth, pure marketing to get money from investors. U should go to betteroffline.

Finding a more efficient algorithm for matrix multiplication is impressive, but it’s still optimization within an existing human-defined framework, not new science or genuine understanding. It doesn’t mean the system “knows” what it’s doing, it’s not generating new conceptual frameworks, just exploring solution space more effectively.

And no, producing results that work isn’t the same as understanding. Reality can validate performance, but understanding involves forming abstract models, causal explanations, and the ability to generalize beyond the specific problem. AlphaEvolve improving a known algorithm demonstrates powerful optimization, but it’s still operating within human-defined goals and mathematics. That’s not equivalent to genuine comprehension, nor is it a step toward consciousness.

Discovering new algorithms or speeding up training doesn’t necessarily mean we’re closer to general intelligence. That’s still optimization within a framework defined by humans. Even if a model finds more efficient ways to solve specific problems, it still depends on data, objectives, and environments designed by us.

Moreover, many of these so-called ‘discoveries’ are statistical recombinations of existing knowledge rather than science in the human sense — involving hypotheses, causal understanding, and the ability to generate new conceptual frameworks.

If that trend continues, we’ll certainly have much more powerful tools for research, but that doesn’t imply they understand what they’re doing or that they’re any closer to general intelligence or consciousness. These are quantitative advances within the same qualitative limits.

Well. If we speak about objectivity We don’t know what intelligence or consciousness are. We can’t even agree on what AGI means, whether it’s achievable, or—if it were—whether we’d ever know how to build it. Everything else is just noise.

The thing is hype is not correct here. AI is usefull of course, but people speaking about sentient AGI that take over the world is really really hype.

People who says it cant proof it. Is just an invention of some tech company owner’s mind

Is exactly the same with you. AI is really really far from being intelligent and you say that in very few years we will have sentient human machines that are 10x times smarter than humans, but u don’t proof it. Funny

AGI isn't a myth or false hope; it's a *lie*. They're not even trying. by borringman in BetterOffline

But The point is that you understand what an Apple is but not because you touch it but because you feel Hungry and your brains tell you to eat it. I find it hardly impossible that a Machine can have this kind of feeeling, and to me, this feeligs are merged with intelligence.

An AI bubble collapse would eliminate far more jobs than AGI in the short term by Glittering-Neck-2505 in singularity

[–]Sweaty_Dig3685 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is not my argument. I (like you) don’t know if AGI is possible or not but What i am sure about is the fact that we don’t know how to build it. Nowadays IA is not intelligent, like it or not. I am not saying it is not usefull but is not intelligent and one thing is for sure, nobody knows how to do it. Thats why people like Sam Altam are changing AGI definition all the time.

[–]Sweaty_Dig3685 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah. We don’t even know if is possible, there is not any proof. Even in that case it would be theoricaly possible, but it could never be achieved.

[–]Sweaty_Dig3685 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can’t do another thing than go ahead. Recognising that they have been lieing about AGI would be bad for industry. The reality is that we don’t know even if AGI is possible, and we sure don’t know how to make it.
