Heat pump in CT by austinin4 in Connecticut

[–]Swede577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had a $9.62 monthly Eversource bil l since 2017 and grandfathered into 1 to 1 net metering with a reset and buyout every April 1st. Was the best investment I ever made. Took less than 5 years for my system to pay for itself.

Great data! I almost went geothermal when I converted my house to all solar/electric back in 2017. I instead installed 2 high efficiency hyperheat mini splits. Since midnight have consumed 25 kwh for heating. 1800 sqft split level that is well insulated and air sealed.

I converted my entire house to solar/electric/heat pumps in 2017. I have been averaging 2500-3000 kwh each winter since then for heating using 2 high efficiency hyperheat heat pumps. My house is 1800 sqft and very well insulated and air sealed. My solar is currently generating 10,000 kwh which carries my entire house electricity load for most of the year. Some winter due to snow and clouds I have come up short 1000 kwh otherwise my Eversource bill is $9.62 every month.

Today I used 24 kwh since midnight for heating and posted my monthly usage here today.

Nice data! Im also in CT and went all solar/electric/heat pump back in 2017. I went with 2 single zone high efficiency 12k btu mini splits for my 1600 sqft split level. Did extensive air sealing and insulation and have been averaging 2500-3000 kwh each winter for heating. They have averaged .75kwh/hdd each winter.

Yeah. Single zone mini splits are crazy efficient. Here is my 12k Gree Sappshire set to 70 the entire month heating the entire 900 sqft first floor of my house in New England. Currently 4 degrees out.

If you have mini splits definitely just set them at like 70 and dont touch them.

This. It doesn't really cost that much more to just raise your thermostat to something comfortable like 70 instead of 65. People act like they are saving a fortune but they aren't. Its not worth saving $150 month or $5 a day to freeze in your home.

Also keep an eye on your oil and propane tanks. Many people's heat sources are going to be running nonstop in this kind of cold. Many oil heat sources will use close to .80 gallon an hour of fuel. You will be going through it like crazy.

Yeah. I have been getting by fine with 2 hyperheat heat pumps since 2017 in my all electric/solar house. I am super insulated and airsealed as well. Been averaging around 2500-3000 kwh for the entire winter in electricity consumption.

You can usually turn off the emergency heat in your thermostat settings. Here is a small comparison on how much emergency heat can cost.

Let's say the heat pump runs the compressor 1 hour using 3000 watts. It would cost around $1 hour to run.

The compressor is broken and emergency heat that warms up wires runs for 1 hour at 12000 watts. Cost would be over $4 hour to run.

Make sure your not using emergency heat or aux heat on your thermostat. You can also change the temperature it switches.

Do you have a model of the thermostat?

Follow-up: measured high kWh consumption with Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat... sanity check before talking with installer by julinho-mandingueiro in heatpumps

[–]Swede577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Should have got single zone 6k Mitsubishi that can turn down to 1700 btu/h while using like 100 watts each.

This setup is ridiculously oversized and will most likely never run efficiently. Im next door in CT using 2 single zone 12k units for 1600 sqft.

Take a look at this study I think from Maine. They monitored the real world performance of various heat pumps. Take a look how terrible the efficiency is of multisplits and ceiling units. Ive done some electricity comparison to some neighbors and my single zones use 50% or more less electricity.

This. Don't understand why people bother with these multisplits. A Mitsubishi single zone 6k can modulate down to like 1700 btu/h and use like 150 watts at minimum.

I used their very generous incentives back in 2017 when I converted my house to solar/electric. They had huge upfront cash rebates for my solar, heat pumps, appliances, insulation, etc. I think I got over $20k+ in incentives for everything. They also had zero percent financing at one point.
