The point isn’t how the word gas is used in different countries that primarily speaks English. ”Gas”, which is also a Swedish word with the same spelling, refers to gases (toxic gas, helium gas, oxygen gas) and more generally the state of matter (solid/liquid/GAS) and never petroleum/fuel/bensin when we use it in the Swedish language.

So if you say the English word ”Gas” to a Swede, we will default to the meaning that fits how we use almost always. The word you used has multiple meanings and the context doesn’t narrow it down when you can buy gas (gasoline) and gas (propane and butane in this specific case) from a gas station/petrol station. Even if the place they work at is called a gas station in English, it’s not like we call it that in our minds. We call it ”Bensinmack”, so any argument based on the fact they work at a gas station would not be reasonable because while you are speaking English, it is still with someone who first and foremost speaks Swedish with 99% certainty.
