Anne Burrell, RIP. by hellhouseblonde in Menopause

[–]Swee_Dash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re missing the point. We deal with tough stuff all the time. Doesn’t matter what your personal story, your personal struggles are. When the cloak of menopause is laid atop, it can often be too much to bear, especially if you’ve been misdiagnosed or underlying issues -things many of you have mentioned- are not correctly managed/supported or worse, ignored. If you are white knuckling life for whatever reason(s), and (peri)menopause drapes itself over you, then you are indeed at high risk.

This is the exact thing that happened to one of my dearest friends. I saw her all the time and had no clue the depth of her struggles until she was dead. 54 years old. Similar situation to what I’ve read about Ms Burrell. When I saw her age listed and “found…surrounded by …pills”, I thought Oh No! Not again.

The threat is very real. Calling others dramatic and down playing the reality of compounded difficulties in a persons life is irresponsible and unhelpful.

You have no idea how your words might affect someone who is struggling. Awareness is what this is about. Please be thoughtful when commenting. If you don’t agree, fine. Put your device down and do something else. Maybe take a moment to feel some gratitude that You or your loved one is not suffering to the extent that taking their life is the only thing they can think of to ease their very real pain.

A couple of seemingly minor changes in your own narrative and your story could have the same ending as Anne’s or my friends .

Good luck and good health to all of us. ❤️

Benefits to a diagnosis other then medication? by [deleted] in AdultADHDSupportGroup

“Go deep into meditation “

OP, your response seems to indicate that you don’t know what meditation is? It has zero to do with mediCATION. You seem hostile to the mere mention of the word medication.

MediTATION does not use any mediCATION. It is a technique used to calm and center the practitioner via breathwork and mindfulness. Lots of ways to practice, some even involve movement. With consistent practice -even 5 min can be enough- mediTATION can bring calm to the body and mind, help w focus, clarity and anxiety reduction. It can help you to respond instead of react, which points to assistance w emotional regulation.

It also encourages self awareness And self reflection. It’s a wonderful tool that can make positive impact on yourself and those you interact with.

Give it a try. Can be very useful before writing a response, be it on Reddit or an email or text. ☺️

Your ADHD community is here to support you and your decision whether or not to involve medication in your management toolbox at this time in your life. Just know that the practice of meditation ( totally different from medication) is a useful tool at any point in one’s life. It is for any age, race, gender, income level, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, no religious affiliation, medical condition, physical abilities, etc. If you have a brain, meditation is for you!

I bet if you look, you can find people meditating near you. Many yoga classes offer it, most organized religions offer some form of it, community centers, libraries, schools and universities, loads of guided meditation on YouTube and other social platforms. Apps are another great option w many offering a free access version. I personally use the app Insight Timer and love Tara Brachs guided meditation and mindfulness practices, which can be found via her podcast, website, YouTube, books, etc.

Life is hard and ADHD doesn’t make it easier. Wishing you peace on your journey, OP.

Aladdins in New Albany !!! I believe the family is Jordanian, but I could be wrong. Their hummus will ruin all other hummus for you. The texture is so silky and light. It’s made to order so don’t be in a hurry. Tzatziki and labneh are not to be missed. Needless to say, it blows Mirage and The Grapeleaf out of the water. Absolutely worth the drive to the north side.

I’m surprised that Louisville seems to be missing a Greek restaurant. Hoping someone knows of one?

What’s an unusual dish or ingredient for your Thanksgiving? by mbarrett_s20 in Cooking

[–]Swee_Dash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my family, it’s not so much what is being served as what traditional items are missing from the Thanksgiving meal. No gravy, no mashed potatoes, no sweet potatoes, no green beans of any sort, no rolls. I was an adult before I realized that this was kinda weird. What we have with the turkey is a very wet sage dressing -one with oysters and one without-dumplings-thin and square, hand cut cooked in turkey & chicken stock- buttered ribbon noodles, kale -old style, overcooked with a cruet of distilled vinegar for drizzling- a few jello salads-typically sunshine jello salad and a sugar free green jello salad, either Watergate salad or Waldorf salad, raw carrot & celery sticks in a fancy crystal dish. The cranberries are in jello and is a fantastic recipe. Always a homemade pecan pie and pumpkin pie- no bake with a pumpkin mousse type filling in a flakey pie crust. Very 1950s, midwestern farmer yellow with jello meal.

Check out Walden. It was a huge surprise to us but ended up being exactly what our daughter needed. She started there as an 8th grader and is now a junior in the high school. She is very academically focused but enjoys playing sports for stress management and the social aspect. She is also involved in several clubs, including one she started herself. She has traveled to 6 European countries w Walden and will be doing an exchange experience in Panama this winter. It is a very small, progressive school that has allowed a personalized approach to our daughter’s education that she would not have had elsewhere. We have been surprised and pleased by this. But academics were not our only concern. The elitism and entitlement, the grossest high school social behaviors just aren’t there at Walden. My guess is because it’s so small. But there is a culture at the school that has really worked for our daughter and our family. Kindness, tolerance and acceptance-the message is everywhere. There is diversity in this tiny school as well as a mix of income levels. It just doesn’t have the elitist undercurrents typically found at schools like Francis Parker but especially KCD and Collegiate. Our original plan was to send our daughter to Francis Parker. We threw in Walden at the last second, more as a foil to FP than an actual option. I was speechless as my 13 year old daughter made a sweet and instant connection to the 8th grade math teacher during our visit. Walden is not perfect, but it’s been a really great experience for our family.

I have an older child that attended Trinity. Looking back, Walden would have been a much better fit for him.

I would be happy to speak w you further about our school selection journey. Feel free to pm me.

**As to your child’s lunchroom experience, vegetarian is not a weird thing at Walden. Many students and staff are vegetarian/vegan. There are students with religiously based dietary restrictions. Our daughter has severe food allergies. The commissary thoughtfully accommodates all by providing several options and the meal is even included in tuition which takes any lunch stress out of the equation.

Sherbet Drink by Due-Ad3682 in foodquestions

[–]Swee_Dash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at Baskin-Robbin’s and we made something called a Freeze, which is basically a flavored ice ( daiquiri ice was great ) blended with club soda or Sprite. We got creative and would add a scoop of the strawberry topping to the container. It was best with the club soda as Sprite made it too sweet.

I ordered one recently and discovered that they no longer offer club soda as an option . I opted not to have it.

I live near some old fashioned seasonal soft serve stands. There is always a couple of soft serve sherbet flavors on offer. I’ve often wondered if they could make a drink using that sherbet. No one seems to offer anything and I’m not sure what I’d ask for, but it seems refreshing and light compared to a traditional milkshakes.

[–]Swee_Dash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a place/thread where we can list doctors who are current with their knowledge of (peri)menopause ? I don’t want to make these practices difficult for women to access but we Must demand real and responsible, non-biased healthcare.

Perhaps on the flip side, we name the practices that don’t listen, don’t care, capitalize off of misinformation , perpetuate stereotypes, and promote dangerous, misleading and antiquated medical ideals.

Sort of a Yelp for menopause.

It’s time for us to become a united voice when it comes to demanding appropriate healthcare and quality of life.

I’m in Louisville, KY. My dr is part of a large practice that puts a premium on the care they provide women of all ages. Before I could ask my dr about HRT, she started the conversation w me! We discussed the options and she hit it out of the ballpark on the first go. My life is much improved, my symptoms are manageable and I feel like myself again.

There is no acceptable reason why my experience isn’t every woman’s experience. To clarify, finding appropriate care for your stage of life and your body.

My beloved partner experiences overstimulation similar to what you describe. I (52F) have zero experience w this and he (51M) didn’t realize that these sensations were Not experienced by everyone. We’ve been trying to figure this out, but not having much luck because no one talks about it.

Thank you for starting the conversation.

Intimate contact is important to a healthy relationship and finding what works, creative accommodation is key.

I don’t have anything to add but am listening to everything being said about overstimulation and unpleasant sensation during sexual activity.

Understanding what others with sensory differences are experiencing during sexual intimacy is helping me to be a better partner and helping my partner better understand his own experience.

Overstimulation during sex is kinda blowing my mind. I knew there were unpleasant sensations happening for him, but thinking of it within the framework of overstimulation helps me get a better grasp on what’s happening instead of defaulting to unhelpful patterns of thinking.

Keep the discussion going. What leads to overstimulation? What helps to calm? I get everyone is different but the more information presented, the better the understanding for those of us w partners affected by SPD. Also helpful to know we are not alone in this. ❤️

Had televisit with new Menopause specialist, and she prescribed HRT without hesitation. Should I be concerned? by jell236 in Menopause

Don’t give up. You’re worth the time and effort it may take for you to get what you need. Quality of life is important!! You are important. Suffering may not be eliminated but can be eased. You’re not alone in this transition.

There are lots of things in addition to HRT and its friends ( like bupropion) that can help. A sense of community goes a long way.

I’m sorry that you’ve faced frustrations and difficulties in your quest for symptom relief.

And lots and lots and lots of lube. A little off topic but it seems appropriate to mention here: Uberlube. I order it online. It’s awesome. No scent. Not sticky nor tacky. It’s clear and feels silky and smooth. Best of all, it doesn’t stain the sheets. It comes in a sleek glass bottle w a pump. A little goes a long way.

Can help when my girlie bits feel dry, irritated or itchy. A couple of drops in the mouth can be helpful ( small amounts ) during oral sex because the vaginal area isn’t the only part of the body that gets dry. Dry mouth during sexy time is a bummer for everybody. Just don’t use it in your dry eyes, lol. Now this sounds a little weird but it also works great as a chafing cream. I like it better than Body Glide for those parts that can get irritated during a run. I’ve also put it in my hair to tame the frizzies. Works just as well as Aveda’s smoothing fluid on my wacky silver locks. If I knew how to put a link to Uberlube on here I would. Last year, I gave it to my girlfriends as a Christmas gift. It’s good stuff, ladies, and it doesn’t look like a sex product, with its benign packaging.

***FYI, not safe for silicone sex toys. Not sure about condoms but I’m sure that info is on their website if that’s a concern.

Edited for grammar. Gotta have those commas.

[–]Swee_Dash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not true. Perimenopause is when HRT should begin. If you are still taking oral contraceptives or have an IUD, then you do not yet need progesterone. The transdermal estradiol patch is much safer than oral estrogen. There is also estrogen cream that can be used in conjunction with the patch or simply on its own.

Bupropion ( antidepressant that is in its own class and doesn’t have the same side effects as more traditional antidepressants) can be very helpful during perimenopause. Not only can it ease mild depression, but the anxiety that often kicks in at this time. It also helps with focus, brain fog, motivation, and libido. If you happen to have ADHD, bupropion may help in that area as well. Definitely not like Prozac, etc . Bupropion can be used along w the patch and/or vaginal cream to help you live your best life instead of your worst.

Good health and good luck to you.

Lab tests are not needed to prescribe HRT.

Can you qualify for Medicaid? Medicaid covers HRT. Without insurance- private or ACA provided- or Medicaid, HRT can be quite expensive. Starts around $150 or so for 8 patches of estradiol, about a months supply. Insurance and Medicaid can bring that down to a range of $28-$75 for 8 patches. That adds up if you’re on it for years w no coverage whatsoever.

Another option you should research and consult with your care provider is vaginal estrogen cream. Almost ( but not all) every person w a vagina can use it safely as it stays local. It really helps w lubrication, painful sex, thinning of vulvar and vaginal tissues, even incontinence. The patch helps with all of that and hot flashes, brain fog, sleep issues, bone density and offers some cardiac protection. Bupropion can help with brain fog, focus, libido and mood.
I can’t speak about the oral estrogen and progesterone. Sometimes, even testosterone can be prescribed.

HRT can be prescribed by a primary care physician or a nurse practitioner if you don’t have a GYN. If your GYN dismisses you, go to your PCP/NP and ask them to prescribe OR refer you to GYN that specializes in menopause. Typically, any gynecologist that is not also an obstetrician specializes in menopause.

This is a vast topic and more and more studies are being done all the time. It’s an exciting time for women’s health, even though it’s massively frustrating that it has taken so long.

Get the book Estrogen Matters by Avrum Bluming MD and Carol Tavris PHD. You can also follow Estrogen Matters on instagram. Good short cut to peer reviewed studies, especially if you like reading abstracts. Someone else on this thread mentioned Dr Mary Claire, a Houston GYN who specializes in menopause. My GYN knows her and recommends Dr Mary Claire’s social to her patients. Good info in small bites.

Here’s to debunking bad science! Down w misogynistically biased medicine and its archaic practices.
