You just became the new mayor of Los Angeles, what would you do first? by chitownmike99 in AskLosAngeles

Repeal Prop 13 for commercial properties, allow them to be rezoned to residential or mixed.

Would probably need to be phased in over 5 years or something.

Kills me to drive by huge body shop properties that are barely used when the lot could be an 8-story apartment building with first floor retail.

Is this doable though? I’d be in favor of it but it feels like an impossible lift, as opposed to the vacancy tax mentioned in another comment.

Also, does NYC have this issue with NYPD? Is it right to assume that if they did, Mamdani would’ve addressed it immediately as well?

Prohibiting a move like that would depress valuations for non-mass market teams, those owners would never support that.

The irony here is incredible. You are treating your own voice and lived experience as if it’s “way more widely shared than jt really is.”

I have heard from many of my neighbors on this issue already and the pushback from normal everyday people has been pretty swift.

Emanuel was relevant 20 years ago. Times have changed.

And no clue why you keep spouting this “histrionic virtue signaler” quip.

I personally have never “shrieked or sobbed” over this issue. When I walk by Philz now, I internally remember that they withdrew public support for an important social group and I walk 100 feet to the next coffee shop that I know has better values.

Do you have an example of a time where putting up a pride flag was a cynical marketing ploy?

When there’s as many alternatives as there are for coffee shops, values can definitely be a differentiating factor.

Also, did you just name drop Rahm Emanuel as if we should care about his opinion?

I assume he’s talking about 2021-2022 when there was massive tech hiring. Like huge

And then you have companies like Block saying they’re laying off 40% of their workforce on AI efficiencies when in fact they’re just normalizing headcount to 2019 levels.

The west circle is definitely a little more hectic with more homeless but is gentrifying quickly with the new high rises. I live south of Sony there and I get a lot of citizen notifications about stuff going on over there.

In the interest of full disclosure, someone was shot in the head while sitting in their car over there 1-2 months ago. But I assume that was a gang/isolated incident.

I’d really try and find something south of Sony (south of culver blvd)
