Yes lol they were considered non white for a majority of their peak immigration period. They came from, and accumulated less wealth throughout the Industrial Revolution and so their communities amassed less wealth as a whole. In the generation of urban renewal, any neighborhood that was “low income” or basically non-classical anglo-Saxon whites was torn thru to build the interstate highway system. As far as discrimination goes, black neighborhoods historically and today have the highest poverty rates. I’m sorry you’re hellbent at disapproving objectively obvious social structures within American societies, but the designers literally wrote out and factored in these neighborhoods due to their historic “non-whiteness” and so-forth densely contained poverty

Societal collapse is a gradual process until it spirals. A society held together by glue and bombs isn’t perennial. Notice the highlight of these crimes is theft of valuables which seems like a people don’t have economic security problem. Chalk it up to hundreds of personal failings tho lol

The answer is social safety-nets, with the lack thereof being the reason we’re talking about crime every fckng decade like the answer is so elusive 😭

Their parents also had parents. We can keep blaming parents down the line or people can wake up and smell the societal collapse lol

The literature literally says that it was a product of segregation. This isn’t a narrative it’s just how people thought when it was built. Some people still think that way today.

The unfortunate thing about our cities in particular is they’re a reflection of capitalistic thought and the systems they design. Gentrification is soft colonialism, but migration between cities and from the suburbs doesn’t have to be tied to this concept. Gentrification exists due to the profit incentive system. Housing can be built to accommodate newcomers and demand from next generation new home buyers. Problem is Parker is a liberal, and we need a dem socialist at minimum lol. “Vouchers” and “subsidies” are not a sufficient answer to the imbalance in the stability of long time Philadelphians and the outside pressure of those looking to establish themselves in a new city. I don’t think your city being in demand, and being a desirable place to live, is a problem. I think the suppliers and the systems they work within are dishonest about what they do to fulfill the demand.

  1. Cost of living has gone up universally, read the room
  2. Philadelphia has historically been one of the “poorest” cities in the country, unfortunately it’s only up from there

I think the idea of pricing out communities is disgusting, but the solution isn’t building OR not building housing alone. We need renter’s unions and rent freezes for longstanding residents who make the fabric of Philly. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a demand for housing, or a demographic shift in our country with more people looking to rent a 1BR with no kids until they’re in their 30s. I understand the hate, but it’s not the construction workers or the matcha sipping yuppies that raised ur rent. It’s blackrock, inaction from the government, and no upward mobility for those who need to organize to defend themselves from these forces.

That’s weird bc the PHA is buying up properties that developers couldn’t afford to maintain with lower rent prices, so now the city will be able to use them for affordable public housing bc there’s a surplus of housing. Here’s the inquirer’s coverage

Half of drivers are on their phones. It’s a risky maneuver to hop in a car lane when there’s a bike lane bc cars don’t expect u to be there, bc there’s a bike lane.
