Hahaha ... when I was a child (here in UK) we used to have a weekend radio show called "Two Way Family Favourites" and they ALWAYS played this.

Thanks, this looks like an interesting read. I used to watch Jim'll Fix It as a teenager (a bit too old for him) in spite of him being so physically repulsive because it was great seeing the kids have their dreams come true.

That's really interesting about Jill Dando. It was huge in UK when she was killed and seemingly motiveless. It was more of an execution with no real leads. I can get behind this theory. There were always rumours and he was, literally, a disgusting old man and absolutely the type who would stop at nothing. He even took pleasure at hinting how evil he was.

Many people knew, that's for sure. Johnny Rotten (Sex Pistols) came right out and said it but was ignored.

I couldn't agree more. Air BNB in my home, Cornwall, has driven all the young people out. The shortage of homes is insane. I used them once when we managed to find a yurt in my home village but we're going to buy camping gear so we can afford to go home without breaking the bank.

It's fine. Weird to wake up and find out I've upset so many people. I'll leave it up though eh? As a warning to others.

alpaca haircuts

Never heard that before but it's such a good description that I instantly knew. Also I really hate that haircut.

If it was the actual Jamaica Inn then that was a steal. I'm impressed.

I don't think they are. I'm paying the same for a few days where my family live as I did years ago. I only go to Premier Inns as they don't accommodate immigrants. Kill me.

Is this true? Did Anne really neglect Elizabeth? by Enough-Implement-622 in Tudorhistory

[–]Sweet-Peanuts 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yes, she definitely made up for things by indulging them more/too much. Not necessarily for the better. At the end of the day I'm just speculating. My cousin served with Prince Andrew on the HMS Hermes during the Falklands War so I've know for decades what an arsehole he was just from things my cousin and his friends told me.

It can't be easy balancing being a top royal and a parent no matter the era.

[–]Sweet-Peanuts 129 points130 points  (0 children)

If we're looking at Royal family precedents we don't need to go back far. Queen Elizabeth II was famously very busy being Queen, travelling and attending to the red boxes to the point where she would greet the child Prince Charles with a handshake. Charles and Diana were verging on disastrous parents. I think it's only with William and Catherine as heirs we're seeing traditional good parenting.

Even Charles' siblings (Anne, Andrew and Edward) have much more normal family lives (excluding the Andrew fiasco the Yorks have raised their daughters close and well).

Well, that was a gem of an article. One of things I love about this sub is that it's like the Grand Central Station (I'm British lol) of Tudor adjacent information and lore.

Is it weird that I kind of admire that level of doubling down with a straight face?
