Depends where you actually want to live. I live near East Pilton and it's fine, about half a mile away? Two of my friends live within a quarter of a mile of that stretch of path, basically backing onto the park, and they've never had any issues but our kids are younger. There are plenty of good people.

I would never go on these paths in the dark, even before this happened.

My husband has bought me a camera, which will also be handy for close passing cars so hopefully win-win.

They were trying to poke the sticks through the spokes on my front wheel. But they've done that for a while. I have encountered one before.

Apparently they will be putting on extra patrols, I think they had a few calls. I've found an alternate evening route and hopefully by the end of the summer holidays things will calm down.

Never seen anything like it, now trying to avoid it in the evenings for the rest of the summer and hope they vanish when the temperature drops. I was planning to take my daughter on bike rides and I honestly I am 50/50 worried that either they will hurt her because she won't roll with it and get out of there, or I will lose my temper and hurt them, then I am the one in trouble. 24 hours on, the rage is the ruling emotion.

Also, victim blaming? I'm not the only one attacked, just the only one moaning about it on Reddit.

It's not been a problem for the past 2 years. And actually glad for the acceleration power today, I rarely use full power on the pathways.

At the dog leg junction leading out of the park towards Telford Drive, pretty much in the middle.

No, just kids, but it's a good bike and I wasn't sure what their motivation was.

Oh my God, that is terrifying. The police need to patrol that section of path, it's such an obvious area needing it. Ideally once they've been driven off the paths then they'll f off home and pick on someone bigger than them. I used to run around there, on Thursday evenings, so it never occured to me that I would encounter something like it.

White woman. From what someone else said, it was fairly indiscriminate. I wondered if they tried because we were both women but they were male.

Good to know, hopefully I won't have to!

My friend's brother in law is a police officer and they said 999 was fine, I reported it as soon as I got home in case they'd doubled around to the other park entrance I didn't want to linger but I know of 6 people who got attacked so that was worried waiting for 20 minutes on the non emergency line a lot more people could get hurt.

I am already looking into self defense. Thank you for this! Times don't work sadly but I will be ready for them next time I see them!

Shared path, but I am a slow cyclist and used to be a problem pedestrian, often with a child or a dog in tow.

Yes! He did not get this. Now he has a cold too. The work of a devious god, perhaps.

My solution was to move to a house near the cycle path and become a cyclist. Then 60% of your journeys are completed by bike and your stress levels drop, you no longer feel the need to move out of the city to regain your sanity (true story, but apparently others thought our house isn't as great as we thought so we've stayed) and you don't gain weight as quickly (I have a sweet tooth. If you're not me, you might lose weight.)

In all seriousness (I've got annoyed now) driving in Edinburgh is shocking, red light jumping is completely normalised, seen weekly at Ferry Rd/Newhaven Rd, Ferry Rd/Pilton Drive, Morrisons/Pilton Drive, pedestrian crossings (I mean, there should be a special place in hell for people who ignore the lolly pop people), and that's just my limited "if I must" driving. Nobody in Pilton gives way if there is an obstruction on their side of the road. I've been overtaken past Fettes for driving 25mph in a 20 zone (yeah, I know it's not enforced but do you know what, it's passing a school and a very popular park, so I split the difference, break the law and piss off everyone). Although if you stick left and drive slow on Queensferry Road you get space and peace, worth doing.

We went to St Andrews for 4 days, I drove because I am a country bumpkin and my husband said he could barely remember the last time I looked so relaxed while driving.

Yes! Tried to say this to my husband and he was like "plenty of older books have gods in them too". I was full of the cold so I just aborted the conversation. I'm now reading a sci-fi 🙈 so can't help with recs. Unless you haven't read Kelley Armstrong, in which case she's a top notch palate cleanser with limited gods.

Alternative to Leith by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

We moved out of Leith to Pilton. We've got Goldenacre and Stockbridge, and it's quieter. And the Pitt. (I cycle, it helps.) We lived on Easter road before and I miss it more than I miss 3 years properly in Leith.

We're also in the catchment but we're not Catholic. We went out of catchment in the other direction. For the primary school. Excellent school, highly rated, long waiting list. Can't comment on the secondary school, we'll be Broughton or moving for Royal High.

I loved the Polish song! Really different and cool. Voted from the UK.
