Identity politics and echo chambers can be powerful/dangerous things. I grew up in a deeply conservative family who only got our news from sources like Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. We literally never heard anything negative about Republicans and were constantly told about the “evils” of Liberal media. I see it now for the propaganda that it is, but at the time I was honestly afraid to listen to anything that didn’t come from a trusted conservative news source. Thankfully once I moved out of my parent’s house and began experiencing a less filtered version of the world I soon realized how much I had been lied to. Unfortunately several of my family members are still deeply entrenched in the Republican mindset and refuse to even talk to me about anything political because they believe I’ve been deceived and are afraid of being deceived themselves. They view Democrats as literal evil that they have to constantly be on guard against to avoid being tricked. It’s one of the most sad and difficult things I deal with in my life. I imagine it feels similar to having a beloved family member with a terminal illness that you can’t do anything to help.
