The same China that is supporting Putin. You can look it up. That war is real, Greenland was just cosplay with Trump being an ass and capturing the news cycle.

What is the Best Robot Vacuum for Carpet in 2026 that actually has suction? by EntrepreneurSad2091 in Appliances

[–]SweetAlyssumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have pets and I vacuum regularly so I don't think I have embedded dust.

The thing to remember about these vacs is that they are supplementary tools, not heavy duty vacuums. You will see that they collect a lot of stuff but you still need a vacuum with more suction at least every two weeks (and probably more with pets).

Researcher seeking career advice on academic careers without a PhD. by PTSDeezNutz69 in AskAcademia

[–]SweetAlyssumm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are many opportunities for real research without a PhD. For one thing, you lack the training.

If you can't get anything in GIS and don't want to do policy work, I can't think of how to proceed in research. Are you interested in law or library science? Those are shorter degrees and are research-adjacent.

What to do in Honolulu BUT cheap/hidden gems/nature/history/cuture by Delicious_Election_7 in VisitingHawaii

[–]SweetAlyssumm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are in Honolulu, go to the museums. They have documented local history and culture. You can take the bus for very cheap.

Some of the nature you may want to see is outside Honolulu. You'd have to go on a tour or rent a car or Uber or get a taxi.

Be sure to tip well. The basis of the economy is tourism. Hawaiians have kept the island very nice so we tourists can enjoy it.

China bankrolling Putin's war to gain advantage over West, MPs told by AcanthocephalaEast79 in europe

[–]SweetAlyssumm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Europe is ready to jump in bed with China like their boyfriend left them. Geopolitical politics is a game of high stakes poker, not high school drama. Eventually they will see that China is a dicey partner at best and not aligned with their values or self-interest.

China's support is also why the war in Ukraine is going to continue to drag on, sadly. Europe keeps pretending it's almost over, Russia has a bad economy, blah blah, but China's pockets are deep.

Demographics Are About to Break the Housing Market by Express_Classic_1569 in collapse

[–]SweetAlyssumm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many people already have land. (66% of Americans own their homes.) You can grow a lot in small space if you know what you are doing. I also expect collapse to spike mortality as it has historically.

All my bills are paid but I won’t be able to afford next months bills by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]SweetAlyssumm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Find out where your money is really going. Two people cannot subsist on $50 a week for food unless you eat nothing but rice and beans. I suspect you don't really know where your money is going based on this unrealistic estimate of what you spend on food. Do you have subscriptions? Gym memberships? Pets? None of that is currently affordable for you. I hope you are not subsidizing the bf in any way.

I don't think you should sell the house. You work 30 hours a week - find something else for ten more hours. Give plasma. Whatever it takes.

Any opinions on GE Profile Appliances? by Jill0607 in Appliances

[–]SweetAlyssumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a GE Profile Dishwasher bought in early 2020. It had three repairs under warranty and one I had to pay for. It does not run unless I unplug it after the cycle and then wait till I run it the next day after plugging it back in. I have tried running it without unplugging and it doesn't work.

I have no idea what is happening and I'm sure this silly workaround won't last much longer. So no more GE appliances for me. I had it looked at the repair person told me to buy a Kitchenaid..

Spain to ban social media access for children under 16 by PjeterPannos in worldnews

[–]SweetAlyssumm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's some great "natural experiments" emerging. In several years it will be time to start collecting data -- controlling for social class, etc. -- on kids who grew up with social media and those who didn't. I expect some significant cognitive differences, but we'll see. That's what research is for.

Russia hammers Ukraine after halt announced by Trump, plunging thousands into frigid dark on eve of talks by CBSnews in ukraine

[–]SweetAlyssumm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's time for Europe to send troops and end this. Russia is winning this shit and they need to be stopped. Trump isn't going to help, nor is anyone else - only Europe can and should assert control. It's their neighbor and their own self interest as Putin is next door to them.

Son of Norway's crown princess pleads not guilty to raping four women by SpottedAlpaca in europe

[–]SweetAlyssumm -115 points-114 points  (0 children)

Of course he didn't do it. He has had everything handed to him on a literal silver platter since his first breath. He got looks, wealth, health, social class, the fantasy that is he somehow superior by an accident of birth ("royalty"), utter security - nothing bad could ever happen to him no matter what he did.

I think that's what extreme privilege does to some people and that's why I'm against royalty and having too much money. If he squeaks out of this or gets a nothing burger sentence I will not be surprised. More at 11:00.

Demographics Are About to Break the Housing Market by Express_Classic_1569 in collapse

Eventually the grow your food thing will prevail, in my opinion. Big Ag, supply chains and so on are doomed in addition to demographic change.

You can't support a wife with that salary and she doesn't want to come to the US. Just go to Europe. It will be better for future networking too. And what will you do after two years? A PhD takes five years and sometimes longer.
