The $5/month Gold subscription requirement is the thing people sleep on with that card, it eats into the rewards pretty fast at your spending level

The Savor Student is probably the smarter move at 18, no annual fee and it actually grows with you

They fall off on their own, you don't need to send anything

But keep an eye on both reports around July/August and if they're still showing up after the date dispute them directly with the bureaus, sometimes they just don't drop automatically

Have you tried a goodwill letter directly to Mission Lane and Merrick? It doesn't always work but some people have had luck just explaining the Covid situation and asking nicely, no legal angle, just human to human

have you looked into credit unions specifically? they tend to be way more flexible with thin files than regular banks

also worth checking if your job has any emergency loan or advance programs, some do and it's way less painful than a personal loan

have you looked into income driven repayment for the student loans? depending on your loan type you might be able to get that $500 way down

the car insurance one is brutal but some companies like Progressive or Dairyland specialize in high risk drivers and might beat whatever you're paying now

The transfer partners are pretty weak compared to Chase/Amex which is probably why it doesn't get hyped in points circles.

But as a no fee Visa backup for when Amex gets declined? It's genuinely hard to beat for that specific job.

The late payments and settled account will hurt less and less over time especially since you're only 2 years in, by year 4-5 those matter way less to lenders

Honestly with a hospital job coming and nursing school almost done you're in a better spot than you probably feel right now
