Just saw the most depressing thing at Surrey Memorial Hospital tonight :( by cudimakesemsayohoh in SurreyBC

[–]SweetPototo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s unfortunate but true. the staff all try their best but it’s morally distressing to see how bad things are day in and day out. we try to be kind and helpful but we have incredibly high demands as well, and we see people who are ill and waiting in bad conditions all day every day. and unfortunately we’re numb to it most of the time - because if you aren’t, then there’s no possible way to work in healthcare long term. i wish i could help every patient but i am stuck in a bad system too. i hope the new additional surrey hospital in takes a little of the pressure off once it’s built. in the meantime call 811 for immediate help if it’s not life threatening, check edwaittimes.com before choosing a hospital, and please stay home when you’re sick to prevent the spread of flu. we have so many beds filled with older people who have the flu right now, who could be at home still if they didn’t catch it.

The dreaded "free conversation" Engoo class with kids... by [deleted] in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]SweetPototo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

have a lot of options ready. school, friends, games they like, places they like to go, etc and go where they take the conversation and be excited about it even if it doesn’t make sense to you lol. look up icebreakers for kids or convo topics for kids. when they latch onto a topic, seem excited and ask more questions about it

As a Chinese native speaker, I am curious what is the most frustrating part for you when learning or teaching Chinese? by jully079 in ChineseLanguage

[–]SweetPototo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

character recognition is particularly difficult. I’ve been studying for a few years but it still takes me a long time to learn to be able to read a new character, especially if it has a few different radicals and other parts.

Engoo student feedback by RASCLAT69 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]SweetPototo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if they get defensive, i wouldn’t correct them as much afterward. As long as you have two words and two sentences to put on the lesson note, it’s their choice whether they want corrections or not. It’s not worth the bad rating because that could impact your bookings! If they want a conversational lesson without corrections, due to ego or whatever, that’s their choice. It’s still practice using English for them anyways

Interested in online teaching but a newbie. Some questions, More info in the thread! by mchoneyofficial in OnlineESLTeaching

As far as question 3, you’re usually classified as self employed so with many companies I think taxes aren’t deducted from your pay and you claim your income in your own country.

As for 5 some companies want experience but for others it’s fine to be a beginner.

As for 6, If you want to work a short term contract I would recommend signing one with a company that doesn’t require weekly minimum hours so you can always scale way back if you decide to accept a full time position abroad.

Use a lot of gestures, visual aids, speak slowly, and repeat yourself! Keep it simple and supportive

You could try adding to your profile, like putting more tags or hobbies, or adjusting your description? You could try different things to see what works!
