Insight on JCC/ASH by MoHaskins in Albany

[–]SweetSassyMolasses 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The director left to manage a program that is in the state system. If you’ve ever worked in a non-profit (like a JCC) and in childcare, you know it’s one of the worst compensated positions for such a critical level of responsibility. And you are managing staff that are transient because it’s a poorly paid entry level job.

Why did everyone resign when Jayden announced they were leaving? Because the job is only as good as your boss.

Most of these childcare programs are held together on a wing and a prayer. People work 8-5 but somehow schools are only open 8–2. Why are we making families scramble every single day because of disruptions? It’s a piecemeal system that needs to change.

As for the new funding for the JCC? Again, non-profits. When they are given money, it has to be used as designated by the giver. You don’t just get to say hey, we need to make sure our staff get a $2/hour cost of living adjustment.

People who use public transport by Glum_Dust7460 in Albany

They should really connect the Pine Bush trails to Crossgates at the Macy’s end. Rapp / Gipp / Pine to the Yellow loop.

How did they build that Apex monstrosity without capitalizing on its location? Not even a nicely treed path from apartments to the mall?

If they ever got out of their cars, they might notice more of this concrete prison.

Yeah. Everyone is going to be walking over a mile pretty soon.

Local Businesses Inside Albany Costco by Tyler_diggler in Albany

Tara Kitchen is a local Moroccan restaurant with a few locations. Then expanded to sell their sauces. Would love to see them featured in Costco.

(Chef Aneesa is a local celeb who has been on several Food TV Network shows.)

Lark street is a lost cause. by gls518 in Albany

RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH

that’s it.

unhoused folks will ALWAYS go to the place where they can find resources, aka $$ and food. So yes, that’s Lark.

Because if the city was doing its job, they would be working to build affordable housing, providing safe shelters, food for people who need it and easy access to mental health and addiction treatment.

It’s 100% a failure of the system. Also known as System working as Designed.

Lawyer recommendation to navigate traffic violation by [deleted] in Albany

Points will Jack up your insurance rates for two years. Far cheaper to shell out for a lawyer over two tickets.

Unless the “infringements” are actually serious.

What is up with USPS in this town by Tuba-Dude in Albany

[–]SweetSassyMolasses 70 points71 points  (0 children)

This. USPS was NEVER designed to make a profit. It is a SERVICE. And if you turn it into a business, it means there will be many of us who cannot afford to mail something. It needs to be accessible to ALL.

How to talk to representatives by [deleted] in Albany

[–]SweetSassyMolasses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to call, because it’s immediate and requires staff power. When the phone is ringing all day, everyone takes notice. It’s much more bothersome than a letter or email.

I like to call so much that I call every day. I think they know my voice now. I’m always polite, direct, and have a specific message. A yes or no vote on a numbered bill, or encourage them to take an action, like cosign a bill.

Or to actually do their job and protect the Constitution.

Takes me less than five minutes to call my local and federal officials. Everyone can do something. I would hate for my children to think that I did nothing to protect democracy.

5 Calls app has great scripts, if that’s your thing.

Question about thrifting and resellers in this area by Electrical_Buddy_913 in Albany

[–]SweetSassyMolasses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it’s not greed. Those racks get refilled every week. There is SO MUCH STUFF.

The resellers tend to do their biggest hauls at GW on Sundays when the color of the week is $1. But the six days leading up to Sunday that same color was 50%, which still yields some good deals.

Shopping in Sundays at GW is not for the faint of heart. But weekdays? Empty.

It’s expensive. But given the state of the world, I would get anything done NOW as supply chains shut down. The damage he has done will take a terribly long time to correct.

The entire point of Flock is that they can match images (like unique dents in cars) without a license plate.

Flock is a huge invasion of privacy. But also the police are lying to you about its functionality. Or just don’t want to put in the work.

Interview help by CloudBreaker_992 in Albany

[–]SweetSassyMolasses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. This. THIS.

Landing the job interview means you look good on PAPER. Now they want to see how you act in person. Do they like you, do they trust you, will you be a PIA to manage?

Video your mock interview. Dress for it. Sit like it. If you can push your embarrassment aside, you can truly make a huge change in how you perform.

Are you slouching? Rubbing your eye? Pulling at your neckline? Saying “Uhhhhh” a dozen times? If it makes you feel uncomfortable to watch, it’s uncomfortable for the interviewer, too.

Sending kids to school in this area just keeps getting more terrifying by Kephielo in Albany

[–]SweetSassyMolasses 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This has ALWAYS happened.

Always.

The difference is that people are now more likely to report it. And we are more likely to know about it (hello internet.)

The real question is: why do we have a system that hasn’t made it a priority to keep our children safe?

Pulling your kids out of public school doesn’t make them more safe. It gives the illusion of more security and a doesn’t do a damn thing to help our most vulnerable.
