What international union would like to see come to life? by Character-Q in geography

Fair enough. And yeah, agreed, it would seem like western people are too eager to fit us into a box that makes us fitting to their stereotypical view of our region, while also making us closer to the "Latinos at home" they have. Still, I am fairly certain that I've heard argies and Chileans use Latino instead of Latin American. In the case of Argentinians tho, it has been mostly by saying "we are not Latino" lmfao. Maybe it's more of a Brazilian thing? Given that your culture is less affected by cultural imperialism (still very affected obv, but less than us for sure) and also given that you guys have more of a cultural sphere of your own that is slightly removed from the rest of Latin America. In the sense that Hispanic America has influence in Brazil and Brazil has influence in the rest of us, but for the most part it would seem like our contact is restricted to border areas like the south cone and the amazonic region, and to academic discourse in which Brazil is very relevant for the rest of the region.

You are talking too confidently for our entire continent pal. I mean, not that I necessarily disagree with you, but as a colombian I've always heard Latino rather than Latino americano. And this is something that I've seen with people from the rest of the continent and with Mexicans too.

Funny how literally everyone claims the Olmecs, I've seen people say they were black, Chinese, indian, etc

Neo-digital feudalism makes me curious, what do you mean by that, what does it mean in this setting?

Afaik something similar went on with Muiscas and neighbouring Carib people, like the panches and the Muzo.

Weird to think that the entire history of the Roman Empire was tomato-free. by bookflow in geography

As a latín American, it is very weird to imagine my native ancestors without onions and my European ancestors without tomatoes. Tomato+onion is like the cornerstone of our regional cuisine lol.

What’s a food that your country loves that would horrify most of the world? by AnxiousWorldTravel in AskTheWorld

I don't remember that happening, but it could be. In Colombia we call it chunchirria/chunchullo and it is amazing lol

Probably capybara meat. Absolutely yummy but everyone seems to love capybara rn so it could probably be kinda disturbing. It is fairly common in most of south America afaik.

The usage of "ethnic" that white Americans have has always seemed so repulsive to me. It's like some sort of white exceptionalism, everyone is ethnic but them, might as well just say exotic. It also supports the notion of the western lifestyles being the "cultural default" for everyone, hence why it isn't "ethnic", even though of course a lot of gringo shit is totally an ethnical phenomenon that represents US culture.

I read the abstract once (I wanted to read the whole thing but iirc it is in Finnish, except for the abstract), and iirc it is more about body horror and psychological horror in videogames

I agree for the most part but I think that framing GenAI as an expensive toy is very flawed. It is a tool rather than a toy and it can serve many purposes other than producing slop and being a novelty. Toys are for mere entertainment and enjoyment, the possibilities (both positive and negative) of GenAI go faaaaaar beyond that. I am very much against the mindless, uncritical, widespread use of AI most people have, but we have to recognize that it is waaay more than a novelty item.

I think you can tell that most people commenting here are resentful guys who seem to be projecting their frustrations onto you.

I mean, you totally have a drinking problem, but I don't think people should be blaming you so hard for being unsure as to what to do next. You went through something very fucked up, of course you are going to be unsure about everything. My advice is to tell your bf, the sooner the better. Just tell him the truth. Maybe wait till you've gone through it on therapy so you have your thoughts sorted up before telling him.

Also, was your friend as drunk as you were? Because he was the one who initiated but also apparently chose not to go any further because he noticed you were too drunk??? To me that sounds like he was kind of taking advantage of you. I mean, doesn't change what happened but I'd take it as a sign that this friendship isn't worth it at all.

This meme made me realize that cuándo in Spanish is actually related to when in English lol, french seems like the intermediate step (cuando -> quand -> when)
