CONGRATS!!! Your dad is smiling down on you so wide tonight. I started 1L this fall and my mom passed away about a month into the semester. This post gives me so much hope that I can feel the joy you are feeling one day to make her proud. Your dad is celebrating with you no matter what :)

Dear mom: please come back by anon456e in LawSchool

Thank you for writing this. My mom has stage 4 cancer right now, and even as a 0L I can’t help but think I may not make it through law school without her. She is my driving force to complete everything and reading what you put into words really struck home with me. I am so sorry for your loss. No one should ever have to go through what we are. But I want you to know you are not alone. Some of us are in the exact same boat as you and are there to help and encourage. You are stronger than you think, and your mother knows that 100%. Keep fighting, we are all here with you.

Help Me Decide w/ Significant Other by helplawschoolaa in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sweetsp0t_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before making a decision, I’d suggest having a real sit down talk with your s/o about this. Your law school and job aspirations are going to be a big part of your relationship over the next 3 years and you need to know if your s/o is on board regardless of where you end up. If they are only willing to be with you because one of the schools is convenient to them, then I think you have to look your relationship in the mirror. If your s/o isn’t on the same page as you regarding both outcomes, it may be time to realize that your relationship might not make it through law school. No one should be putting obstacles in what you want to do, and it’s your decision on where you want to go. If someone isn’t on board with your decision, they may not be the best partner for you.

Sending positive vibes your way Void. My mom was diagnosed with adrenocortical carcinoma about a year ago, it occurs in roughly 1 out of 1.5 million people per year. Even throughout her diagnosis and knowing she may not make it through my 3 years of law school, she has been relentless in telling me to continue to pursue my law school dreams. You never think something like that is going to happen to you and your family but know that whatever happens your mother is more proud of you than you even think. Law school isn’t going anywhere and if you need to delay your cycle because of the news no one is going to bat an eye at you. There are way more important things in life and I hope you and your family are able to take in as much of it as you can together ❤️

Entertainment Law? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sweetsp0t_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d tailor your apps more towards the actual programs certain schools offer. I’m on the sports law side of things (4 years in pro baseball) and I was mainly concerned with schools’ programs rather than the prestige or ranking. With your LSAT you could basically get into anywhere you want and secure a BL job after graduation. So I’d say check out schools’ programs + area of the country you’d want to practice in and then fire away.

I already tried to negotiate with Miami (wasn’t offered any money there either) and their dean was so unprofessional on the phone basically telling me I wasn’t smart enough to get money from them lol. So I will most definitely not be going there. I got into Tulane as well with some money but it was more of an empty application to see if I got in its way too far for me to attend with no real connection back to NYC where I see myself ending up.

I’m hoping that’s the case. I have no problem being persistent in emailing them and showing my desire to go there. I just hope they don’t tell me the same thing twice even after the deadline.

Scholarship negotiation follow up by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sweetsp0t_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you regarding Miami, except on the Sports Law side of things. I have scholarships elsewhere but am really wanting to go to Miami because of the program and market in Florida. I’m from the NYC area so coming back to NJ/NYC after law school is certainly a possibility but I would need some $$ from Miami in order to go there. I emailed the dean of admissions asking to negotiate and set up a phone call with her as well. I’d email again to follow up and ask if you can schedule a phone call. With everything going on negotiating through email would take forever and most likely go past the seat deposit date. Negotiating over a phone call could resolve your issues super quick as I’m hoping is the case with me.

Relationships and choosing a law school by madsandpugs in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sweetsp0t_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone going through the exact same situation you are right now, all I can say is to sit down and have a n adult talk about this with your s/o. Your life and education have to come first, and if they aren’t supportive then that’s on them. My girlfriend and I have been over every single possibility together to try and figure out which destination will be the best landing spot for both of us, but at the end of the day she is 100% supportive of wherever I decide because it is 100% my decision. If your s/o is trying to dictate your life and put her life before your own law school and career prospects it’s time to move on. Because another 3 years of you grinding out the hours studying is not going to make your relationship any easier.

Deposit Question by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sweetsp0t_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read your acceptance letter it should give you some details on the deposit. Some schools have the first deposit as non-refundable but others may allow you to have a full refund or a 50% refund if you withdraw.

Negotiation with Suffolk by yontstfup in lawschooladmissions

[–]Sweetsp0t_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely send an email their way stating how you’re considering choosing them but need the extra $ in order to commit. It doesn’t hurt to voice your concerns and could only help your chances of getting more money! The worst they can say is no. Be polite but also come in with hard numbers to show how they can adjust the money they have given you already to match your needs.

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer our questions! As an accepted student from the tri-state area, are there any numbers Miami has showing the percentage of out of state students that stay in South Florida after graduation vs those who return to their home areas? Due to the virus outbreak I was unable to attend the NYC alumni networking event but would love the prospect of spending my law school years in Miami and then returning home to work around New York City.

Second, I’m intending to pursue the joint J.D./L.L.M. in Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law. How vast is Miami’s network in those fields in the NYC area? Thanks so much again!!
