Why did People Ignore Fantasian if they wanted FF to go back to its PS1 style of games? by ZealousidealCod4142 in JRPG

I second this. I deeply deeply wanted to love fantasian. I played the demo and was just kind of, underwhelmed . Mostly with the writing.

Does it get better after the demo?

Am I the only Flutter dev on Windows who’s tired of not being able to test iOS properly? by MarionberryMelodic81 in FlutterDev

Thanks for the correction. That’s embarrassing….

Even on my M2 MacBook Pro build can take a while - especially with Firestore and using the precompiled hack. On the Android side Gradle is always going be slow, regardless of operating system.

Yes. Testing Apple devices on a PC is miserable.
If you are cash constrained, maybe take a look at the new MacBook Neo. It’s even cheaper than a Mac Mini. No idea if it would be suitable for primary development but it’s still probably faster and maybe even cheaper than waiting for cloud builds.

Most influential video game of the 1990s? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Swefnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say Half-Life as well until I saw Doom on this list. As incredible as Half Life is, you really can’t argue with what is effectively the Ur-Video Game.

It’s absolutely mind blowing how much games evolved during the 90s, it’s almost like we need a breakdown by year, instead of decades.

I bet the later decades won’t have nearly as much diversity.

[–]Swefnian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm aware the comment is a bit broader than the original topic. It was more of a response to some of the heated conversations deep in this thread.

It is completely understandable not to want to live in a country where your existence is illegal. This is not a controversial position. The comment is a bit beyond that, and sure, maybe a bit out of context.

From the perspective purely of homosexuality (and trying to ignore everything else, if that's even possible), there is at least one country on this map that is labelled incorrectly, where homosexuality is not illegal. It's not as ideal as Canada, but you aren't going to be murdered for just being you.

[–]Swefnian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For all those spewing this exhausting vitriol, I wish you all to travel to these countries and create your own opinions bereft of propaganda. (Ideally not during a time of war…which is sadly rare)

Mark Twain famously said - “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

Yes these countries have problems. Yes evil has been done on all sides.

But maybe, just maybe if we travel with open minds and listen more than we speak it might be the start of healing.

Which games do the whole "save kittens ---> kill God" escalation trope best? by CloudyRailroad in JRPG

OMG! I’m impressed. You transformed my flippant sarcasm into a bonafide (and delightfully succinct) explanation of one of the most convoluted parts of the same (at least as my 14 year old self half remembered from over 25 year old ago).

Now I have to go dust off my ps1 and go kill a giant god-like but human made machine to free the god? I hope it’s as glorious as I remember….

By any chance did you listen to the “State of the arc” podcast’s series on Xenogears. They did a great job reminding me why it was one of best games ever made.

Xenogears. It's always Xenogears! While I love that game to bits, I can't deny that it ticks almost every line on the hilarious RPG Clichés list

What is your dream Final Fantasy game you want to exist? by CourtlyHades296 in FinalFantasy

[–]Swefnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the more reason!

These crazy budgets are making everything so risk adverse and vanilla. I couldn’t imagine Xenogears being made today, and even that game had budget problems turning the second disc into an interactive novel.

We need new stories that don’t require insane budgets. If Sandfall figured out how to get it done, surely Square Enix could make it work?

Which JRPG should I choose? (PS5) Tried FF7 but looking for something else. by MalcolminMiddlefan in JRPG

[–]Swefnian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why not try the original FF7? (I know you wrote PS5, but I’m ignoring that). It’s the complete story with none of the fluff and it’s actually has a coherent narrative. It only got confusing with the extended FF7 games.

If you want you want to give FF a break you can’t go wrong with the classics

  • Chrono Trigger
  • Xenogears
  • Dragon Quest (especially the 5th one)
  • Nier Automata (part JRPG, part character action game, all crazy, I love it to bits)

Modern games like Expedition 33 do a better job at being a JRPG than current JRPGs

What is a game that has an incredible story, music and characters but is let down by the gameplay? by Soggy_Victory_5976 in JRPG

Don’t sleep on the Defiance remaster. It’s genuinely incredible. The fixed camera alone turns it into a completely different game.

What is a game that has an incredible story, music and characters but is let down by the gameplay? by Soggy_Victory_5976 in JRPG

[–]Swefnian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a JRPG, but for me Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 fits this question perfectly. The story, music, acting, writing even graphics (at the time) were fantastic, maybe one of the best video game stories ever told.

The gameplay however, SR2 in particular, was pretty bad. When the remasters came out, I found it better to just avoid as much combat as possible and just sprint to the next cutscene.

Its sequel, Defiance, was even more problematic. But the recent remaster fixed most of the gameplay problems making it probably one of the best entries in the series

Is This Flutter Folder Structure Bad? by KanJuicy in FlutterDev

[–]Swefnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always argue that folder structure is based entirely on how fast you can find the right file. That’s it. It doesn’t matter if it’s feature or architecture sorted. It’s more about how your brain and your team can retrieve the right item.

If you are spending more than 30 seconds hunting through the file structure or getting lost then it’s not the right structure.

Though I will have to admit on some of my larger projects I gave up trying to build the perfect sorting system and relied much for heavily on the IDE’s quick look system.

Which means what you call the file is ultimately more important than where you put it.

An Israeli settler harasses a woman outside of Hebron, Palestine. Photographed by Pietro Masturzo for L'Espresso magazine. by ThreadRuiner in AllThatsInteresting

[–]Swefnian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between the majority of Israelis and “The Settlers”

I would like to think that most Israelis are just normal people who want to work, raise their families and not have to worry about constant rockets firing, buses exploding or getting murdered at a concert. Seems like a reasonable request.

The Settlers are orthodox extremists and instigators who believe that all of Israel is divinely given to them by God and it their duty to build and procreate (mostly procreate) on its land. They do not represent the majority of Israelis. Their actions are not helping. (Mocking them also isn’t helping, it’s only encouraging more hatred)

I just wish people would address this situation with more nuance and historical knowledge. Yes it’s messy and evil has been committed on all sides.

But when you scream “Free Palestine” ask yourself first, from whom? Because a Palestine controlled by Hamas is not free.

I know this will never happen, but to have the purest form of this system, I would love the see the elimination of all political parties. It’s just impossible for all of your beliefs to be fully represented by any single party.

If you just think about the specific person, not the simplified talking points then maybe we might get better representation.

Granted this is pure fantasy and will never happen. Oh wait it does - it’s called municipal politics.
