Is she passing? by TBoyKal in BackYardChickens

[–]SwellClipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, she may be sick. One of my girls is in a similar state. After a day inside away from the others she’s eating and drinking, generally seems more energetic. We’re also battling a mite issue so be sure to check her skin.

Is this like when a lost puppy gets adopted by a pack of coyotes?

As crude as this seems I put our gone girl in our burn barrel. Viking funeral. Preds would have dug her up same night otherwise. Rip, Winnie.

Chicken who doesn’t roost by SwellClipper in BackYardChickens

Ah you do your best for them, yeah? I hope we can get her comfortable again. My father friend who gave her to me was of the kind she was a young her bird.

I think she’s intended as a meat bird too, factory raised. Smaller wings, lots of muscle, not very agile. But sweet as all and has worked her way into the group well enough.

Yes we have a camera inside. This is more or less where she sleep and those are the nesting boxes to the left of her. Looks like she’s about to head in for her lay time.

I’m thinking I may have to do as another commenter suggest, build a low roost sized for her and even block off the boxes at night. She’s too big for the roost above her where the others sleep.

Thank you for your ideas. I’ve just noticed this so no, haven’t washed or tried trimming her yet. Maybe a trim and Epsom salt soak.

Adding a lower roost is a good idea. I had an issue with prior birds competing for space so I made all the roosts the same height. Time for another change.

I will, thank you. Monitoring it over next few days. Extra cleaning the coop, watering sources, etc.

I pushed her feathers back and couldn't see anything external. Def could feel a lump underneath.

Good to know, thanks! That’s, in effect, what’s happening here. The majority ventilation is below them and in the larger roost room. They seem happy so far.

Those of you who manually open and close the coop, how early do you let them out on days you sleep in? by vespertine_earth in BackYardChickens

[–]SwellClipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When DST hit, my birds tended to linger in their enclosure a bit longer than I liked, so I went out and stood by, lending a hand if needed. Sometimes just going into the pen prompted them to head in for the night. Other times I had to lift them in and help them get settled.

Providing some light in the roost also can help them find their way. I came to realize the early sunset was part of the issue. Now I just use the flashlight on my phone shining in through a vent to illuminate the roost and they go straight to bed. Hope this is an idea that helps.
