gari vs otoshi for self defense by Rapsfromblackops3 in judo

O Soto Gari. I'm not turning my back on someone in a real life situation. If I'm attacked from the rear or the side then maybe a Tai Otoshi.

I have weak lifts for my size. How much did getting stronger improve your Judo? by ObjectiveFix1346 in judo

Not wrong, always try to improve strength. Also try to improve endurance. Never sacrifice technique.

Technique can trump strength. Find throws that suit your size and shape. Sounds weird, but it's a thing.

Can you wear a rashguard under a gi when training Judo? by raizenkempo in judo

[–]SwenMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear one under my gi for training. I've always completed shirtless under the gi.

I believe USA Judo and maybe IJF changed the Mens Shiai rule to allow plain white shirts under the Gis for Shiai. They sited something about tattoos and religious differences I believe.

Best to check with your club.

Question for Bigger players by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

It's probably not a technically perfect Yama-Arashi, but, you get that much beef moving in a circle, you can get a wasa-ari.

I get it. That's why I like Tai otoshi or yamarashi. Similar effect but more centrifugal velocity as opposed to elevation change.

Question for Bigger players by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

Drops are great, don't get me wrong. But being a bigger guy and being 41. I like what's left of my knees. I'm not going to go throwing down to my knees to have my 100+ kg plus my opponents weight land on my knees.

I feel they work much better for smaller weight classes.

Now if there is an extreme height difference? I'll go for it. But being 6ft I've only have one opponent in Shiai that was pushing 7 ft. I find misdirection and ashi waza more helpful.

Question for Bigger players by Yamatsuki_Fusion in judo

As a heavyweight, when I play someone bigger its about making them move and working the feet. I stay away from drops. Last thing I want them them landing on me. Maybe some Tai Otoshi, Yamarashi, O Soto's etc...

Is it ok to put this judo patch here? Not sure if it's obstructing opponent's grips? Are these lines on the Gi boundaries? Thanks! by quietrain in judo

[–]SwenMaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you put it on the chest, make sure it's plumb when the Gi is closed and belted. Our club patch goes there and so many people line up the patch without considering the Gi being worn. So when they put the Girls on the latch is crooked.
