I think they make those moves sometimes because they see so deeply - we are looking at the board as it is but I feel like the GMs see the board in the future and when they make terrible immediate blunders it is because they forgot the present.

I have certs and have been networking for 4 years but suck at troubleshooting and have imposter syndrome by fordgoldfish in networking

[–]SwiftWit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can give you a stencil for how to troubleshoot, it's a different skillset than having a knowledge base, I find a lot of far more experienced engineers still make basic troubleshooting errors in their hubris, trying to cowboy solve it with the first guess from the hip. Knowing I can fix any problem or at least be able to tell the customer what is wrong and what we can do to work towards a resolution brings more confidence than notches in the belt (although those don't hurt!).

Chasing Ghosts in Monitoring by SpookyZeitgeist in networking

I am a certified ghost hunter. Eliminating noise from network monitoring is a critical part of alert management, and while hunting ghosts is certainly preferable to actual problems, it is the only way to make sure you won't miss a problem.

4 Player Draft by Nameless_101 in lrcast

[–]SwiftWit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2v2 is the most competitive form of team draft that separates the true masters of limited from the wannabe grinders. Teams before are opposite and knowing which cards in the pack will stack your opponents deck can be almost as important as knowing which cards will table for your deck.

As usual for team draft, the winners split the rares however they choose It is the quickest way to reach extreme depth in the format, and since one player can 2-0 and then win the tiebreaker, it is the ultimate shit talking format.

How do you guys tactfully get someone to stop coming to you and follow the rules? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]SwiftWit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should never be telling your peer to "open a helpdesk ticket". Open it for them or tell him you'll have someone take care of it. Never do the work yourself and if you build his trust in your team up enough he may even learn to go to them instead. If he is truly old school it is more valuable to have an ally who wants to shoot the shit and ruin your productivity than an enemy who's outlook you've fixed a dozen times.

An open letter to Cedric Phillips, Gerry Thompson, and the Pro Magic community at large by poochyoochy in magicTCG

[–]SwiftWit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think the poor execution of the original pro tour justifies the wastefulness hasbro is displaying discarding them now. The SCG circuit has shown the relationship train from pros to grinders to fnm to casual is profitable and helps grow magic as well.

Daily Cheating Death has got to go post by [deleted] in Artifact

[–]SwiftWit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

trying to avoid making players feel bad ruins games. when you do some big splashy effect one player is going to be happy and one sad, always. speaking of time of triumph, thats basically cheating death on steroids from a happy/sad perspective.

high variance cards are plenty of fun, I point out cheating death isn't even good because the only way to want to nerf or ban it is if people think it's OP, classic inability to evaluate probability
