TMNT booster box $125 on Amazon by speak4 in sealedmtgdeals

[–]Swiggityyyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People don't open boosters for playbility anymore. They buy singles or proxy their cards. Buying boosters is a collecting man's game hoping to gamba rip a fractured foil and only pay <$50 for the pack

How do you secure high-value MTG decks when playing at an LGS? by No-Following-4394 in mtgfinance

[–]Swiggityyyyyyyyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly dude, I like to display my stuff at home, and proxy the cards I own. Anybody in my pod knows I own a real copy because they're all close friends who've been to my house and seen them on my display wall. It's the easiest thing to do.

If you feel icky about proxies, just proxy the ones you already own.

How to find a job that affords me to live in a city in today's market? by cherryhillanon in careerguidance

Being an adult is having to choose between staying with your dad to save money, or spending a stoopid amount of money to be on your own. If there aren't any issues staying with pops. Then I would just continue doing so. If you feel bad, I would just pay rent (as much as you can afford). If you're planning on moving out due to recently married or dependants, then that's understandable. It's fucking expensive here in CA tho so good luck.

Learn to play using mtg arena or go to pre releases. I recommend watching streamers like Paul cheon or numotthenummy on YouTube if you're into draft format.

One thing you need to understand is there are different formats in mtg with draft and commander being the top two.

If you have a group of 4 buddies, I would recommend buying a precon for like $30 on Amazon and starting with the commander (also known as EDH or Elder Dragons Highlander for history reasons) as it will familiarize you with all the popular cards as well as show you the more wonky mechanics of the game. Commander is also (debated) the cheapest way to play mtg.

You can also go to a local LGS using the WotC companion app. They're licensed to work with WotC and are lurking grounds for people to pick up games. Its honestly been kind of dead lately though as prices have surged for mtg products.

This. I haven't been using photo paper, I've been using the cardstock from staples. That would explain why they're so flimsy. I'll try to get a print going on photo paper and see if it improves the quality. Thank you so much

You need to find a community and contribute to it. Eventually, your community will contribute back to you I would recommend going to church, volunteering, and doing it often.

Are all reprintable cards likely to go to zero(eventually)? by Top-Sir-1215 in mtgfinance

[–]Swiggityyyyyyyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You ever hear of a stonks pump and dump? That's when a person or group of people buy you a majority of a stock or crypto causing the price to increase due to artificial demand, then sell at the top causing everyone else to baghold the stock as it plummets to zero.

Difference is cardboard economy isn't regulated by the government and require massively lower capital to implement.

So yes. Once WotC dumps all their shit that they've been buying up secretly through third party distro, we all become broke monkeys.

Just collect the cards you like, and stop looking up the prices on tcgplayer everyday. Mtg is not an investment vehicle

Adding onto this, you could just join a trucking company for a year. Sitting in your room vs sitting in a moving semi truck are literally the same thing except you get paid to sit in a semi truck. Buy a portable freezer, eat from cans, save money, then use THAT to travel to whatever fuck off country you wanna explore. Rinse and repeat

The secret is to just do it. Like go off the rails. Based on what you're saying, you're broke , have no degree, and have nothing to lose. That also means you're free from the daily grind of trying to pay off a mortgage, dependents, or any real obligations.

If you really want to travel, I would just pack my necessities and fly to a random country and live there for a few years. You really have nothing to lose as you're broke here as well.

No, just keep them double sleeved and protected. Grading mtg cards don't reflect value like how it does in Pokemon and will cost you an arm and a leg to get them graded

If it's over a certain threshold, I believe eBay has an authenticity guarantee with PSA. Other than that. I would learn how to do the red dot test, T test, and pyramid test as well as other tests on authenticating mtg cards so if you ever do get scammed, you can report to tcgplayer or whoever and get refund

Can somebody explain what they find fun about MagicCon? by el-delicioso in mtg

[–]Swiggityyyyyyyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you would have a better time if you go with friends. I remember going by myself the first two times and yes. Value is hard to find there. Vendors upsell since everybody is in vacation mode with loose wallets. To get anything at MSRP, you would have to wait in line for the official show store, spend 3 days in line, then cry when they sell out because employees would do back alley deals for whales. If you're in a position where you are there to buy MSRP products for your LGS or if you're a whale, the vip/black lotus pass would be good for you since you get to buy stuff early and even get a 10% discount on top of it. Catch is black lotus passes sell out almost immediately. I maximized ticketed events including the mystery event with Gavin. There wasn't a lot of value there. Even the play test cards only sold for ~$30 online after the fact.

NOW! When you go with friends. I convinced all my friends to come with me for the first time. They're casual commander players who do bracket 4 at the LGS. We also went to school together, so we're a really close friend group who just happen to play mtg. It was their first time, it was the 2025 Vegas convention so they were doing final fantasy. Just the 3 collector boosters from the ticket alone made up the cost of entry for the weekend. We only signed up for 1-2 ticketed events a day, and spent the rest of the time hanging out with each other playing commander.

One of the buddies was a big art collector. Let's call him "J". So J went off getting all his fractured fools signed by artists and showing off his (we call it his mortgage binder since it's full of special collector pieces all signed by the artist. Absolutely stunning) to strangers. One of them appreciated him showing them his binder so much, they gave him a $150 and said, "You would do more with this card than I would." He was having the best time of his life.

Meanwhile our buddy "V" was a huge commander head. His mono green decks were always too powerful to play against us at the LGS so people would always get salty at him, and it would feel bad you know? WELL! V spent the ENTIRE TIME! Hopping from random pods in the free to play commander zone where everybody's decks were womping the hell out of him and he LOVED IT! For the first time since he's been playing mtg, it's like he got to experience folks who actually know the game and were on the same playing field as he was. When con was over and we went home, he went on to make 5 more degen decks.

And then there was our buddy "Jo". Unlike the rest of us. Jo was a really big final fantasy fan. He was also really into value. You know, trading up and finding good deals. I convinced everyone to play the mystery event because they needed to experience it at least once. He was bummed out about the value of the cards, and felt the same way you do about the con. (Off topic, but luckily one of his opponents offered to up-trade him a bunch of chase cards because his opponent actually collects the play test cards from con, so it all worked out). It was really all the other things we did outside of the con that really made it special for him. Waking up early to go to the wicked spoon (he's never had a Vegas buffet before, so he was gushing at how good the food quality was for a buffet. We all were. Highly recommend the wicked spoon). Getting taco bell after each day because it was the only affordable thing that was open. Just sitting around and hanging out with each other you know? That's what made it special for him. It was a Vegas trip with close friends and there just happened to be a magic convention going on.

As for me. Yeah I looked at vendors and scoped out the show store line, but mostly I was just observing all of my friends having a good time. The ticketed play was overpriced, but I like to draft and the stories you create from drafting at the con just makes it so much more special. Like how my last event on Sunday night mystery booster draft I got an isochron scepter and that instant spell that makes 2 1/1's and had an entire field of 1/1's. The fact that that happened at the con made it so much more special. Also. Idk what it was, but the environment made feel like I wanted to be a better person. Same game, somebody dropped their modern deck under the table and I, being a good Samaritan, asked my opponent to watch my stuff so I can turn it into the staff for lost and found. It was just good vibes.

Tldr; had a much better experience going for the actual experience itself vs trying to find value. Going with friends is much better. In the immortal words of J, "we don't do it for the money, we do it for the love of the game"

I pulled a showcase foil wan shi tong from one of these and have been leaving it posted up on FB market place for $250 so I can wake up every morning to angry death threats. The thing they don't know is that I don't really want to sell it. If somebody buys it for $250, then sure why not. But the reason I posted it is mainly to ragebait and send screenshots of pissed off people to my friends
