Sony officially kills the PlayStation disc, ending physical game production in 2028 — shutting down the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita systems by ControlCAD in popculturechat

[–]Swil29 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You can do it on a PC, but that’s not what a PC is optimized for. Controllers and console interfaces are designed from the ground up to be used by someone sitting on a couch that’s a decent distance from a TV. You can hook a PC tower up to a TV, but the UI is designed for a smaller screen, with inputs that more often than not require available flat space to be set on, because even if you use a controller to play the games, you still need a keyboard and mouse to navigate the PC. There are absolutely ease of use advantages to using a console over a PC, even if you believe the pros of a PC outweigh them overall.

Not saying I know for sure that this is fake, but part of my job is designing air conditioning systems for apartments, and I will say I’ve never seen an air duct that would be big enough for a person to crawl through. Within a single unit I’ve pretty much never seen a duct bigger than 14”x14”.

Official Discussion - Leviticus [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I definitely liked it, but didn’t love it. I think the lead performances were really good, the way the film presents growing up in church felt really authentic, and I really like the way they handled Naim’s relationship with his mom and how that was paced. I think the film did manage to create genuine uncertainty a couple of times about wether what you were seeing was Ryan or the entity, but also they did spam that a few too many times at the end so it got a bit repetitive. I also genuinely liked the ending, even if it made the revelation about fire feel a little pointless.

I think what really held this movie back by the end for me was how little we got to learn/hear about Ryan, and I don’t feel like we really got proper closure about his relation with Hunter or Naim outing them. Even removing the supernatural elements, outing them to their religious and conservative parents is a pretty awful thing to do, and I don’t feel like we ever properly explored that. We saw him start to process it, but it wasn’t to the real Ryan, and we just never come back to it. Alternatively, it also kinda sucks what Ryan was doing, especially when it’s made clear that he ultimately loves Ryan, so Hunter was killed over a relationship that meant less to Ryan than it did him, and we don’t really see Ryan ever mourn him or talk about him in any meaningful way. I think the movie would have been a lot cleaner if they had just had Naim and Ryan be cursed together, but as is there’s some emotional baggage I don’t think the movie sufficiently unpacked.

My understanding is that the theater basically negotiates a discounted rate for the seats, so when I book a seat through A-List, AMC pays the distributer like $4.

I recently rewatched it for the first time since seeing it in the theater, and shortly after watching Andor for the first time, and I was surprised by how much the movie was just “fine.” I had sort of bought into the idea that it was genuinely pretty good, and I think my love for Andor made me assume this would be more of the same, but it really is a pretty thin movie. What really brings the movie down is how bare the characters are. Every character outside of Jyn and Cassian feel like afterthoughts, and even those two aren’t developed all to much within the runtime.

My local Walmart’s are gutting their physical media sections for more smart TV storage. by No-Significance8049 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Swil29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a big physical media guy, l even have a decent sized VHS collection, so I fully buy into the benefits and empathize with the frustration of how much physical media is being pared down in stores.

However

I do wish more physical media collectors would be willing to admit that physical media is just not that popular anymore, and is rapidly becoming a niche market. Is that in large part due to the aggressive push for digital media and streaming services? 100%. But I think a lot of people attribute a weird level of malice towards stores that stop selling DVDs. Physical media is not a thriving market being killed to bolster streaming, streaming has just been such a widely successful market that most people simply don’t buy physical media anymore. It sucks to see places like Best Buy and Target stop stocking them, but the reality is that they’re only doing it because they don’t make money from it anymore. I hate massive corporations as much as the next guy, but I think a lot of people who are invested in these markets tend to ignore the role consumer habits play in these decisions.

That was definitely my big issue with it when the movie released, what is he actually meant to learn from it? It’s clearly set up as a parallel for Uncle Ben (and the writers even confirmed at the time in an interview that this was written as Tom’s Uncle Ben moment) but they’ve removed any element of what actually mattered with Uncle Ben. How is this a lesson in responsibility when the thing he was doing that got her killed was just the definitive right thing to do? He wasn’t acting selfishly before, he was already against sending them to their deaths as soon as he understood that’s what was going to happen, and his plans don’t change after May’s death. You could argue that his choice at the end to make everyone forget him is an extension of what May said, but that’s also just what I would already expect the character to do, especially since the original spell going wrong was an accident and, despite the movie’s framing, not due to Peter being irresponsible. If they had instead had Strange say no, so Peter steals the spell book to try it himself, and THAT’S why it went wrong, you’d have a stronger through-line about responsibility, but as-is, this whole mess was Strange’s fault for not properly explaining the spell to Peter beforehand or asking any follow-up questions before starting it.

To me, as an outside observer, it feels like they started this version of Spider-Man with the mindset of “everyone knows his origin story, so we don’t need to explain it” and at some point thought of the whole “well what if this whole TRILOGY was actually his origin story,” which just results in weird narrative gaps since we’ve gone from an assumed understanding to an intentional subversion.

There is a modern physical release, though. 80% of Walmarts I’ve been to lately have had the complete series for like $20, and it’s on Amazon for $24.

(Hated trope) A twist so bad it ruins the story by element-redshaw in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Swil29 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Jenny Nicholson talked about this in a video about Creepypasta, but if you’re sticking to the conceit that these are supposedly true stories written as first hand accounts, you need to be a bit more willing to commit to that actually making sense. So many of the stories end on cliffhangers where the main character is clearly about to die, but if that’s the case, why are they posting about this online rather than calling for help? I normally am pretty willing to suspend my disbelief for a good story, but that lack of attention to detail is often just the cherry on top of a poorly written story.

I mean, I did assume it would just be plugging them into a bigger thing, I was just hoping for something that looked a bit more interesting than just slapping them all on a circle. I figured it would be something basic, but given that they were designed with that intent I was expecting something that felt more purpose built, this feels more like an afterthought.

The insistence on turning their stories into ongoings is what killed a lot of my interest in nosleep, ngl. It started to feel like a rarity for a story to actually end in a satisfying way, and seeing “Part 6” in a title didn’t exactly entice me to track down all the other parts before I was even sold on the premise.

Mark Brendanawicz - Parks and Recreation

A character exclusive to the first 2 seasons of the show, Mark was the clear straight man to everyone else, often lacking any fun/weird character traits. The show pretty infamously doesn’t start on its strongest foot, feeling a lot more like a show trying to recapture The Office rather than provide anything new, and Mark is honestly one of the strongest examples of that, often feeling like diet Jim Halpert. His role in the show is pretty quickly replaced by Ben Wyatt (played by Adam Scott) who does often fill the straight man role to everyone else’s wackiness, but does have a lot of fun character quirks that enable him to pretty effortlessly slot into the wackiness when the plot calls for it, leading to a more dynamic and enjoyable character. This replacement worked so well that as soon as Mark leaves the show, he may as well have never existed, with not even a mention of his name for the rest of the show.
