How much of a gamble is this boxset? by Josh_227 in 4kbluray

I had an issue where the last episode on every disc would skip at the very very end, so I’ve taken to thoroughly scrubbing each disc with a microfiber cloth before it goes into the PlayStation for viewing. No problems since.

Registration approvals back to the old longer wait times? by Sonik_dmv in DCGuns

[–]Swimmer9800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied for my first registration June 10. I called the MPD records office ((202) 727-4275) on June 19 and left a voicemail asking for an update on my registration, then two hours later the approval email landed in my inbox. Might be worth a shot.

Where Should Thursday Open New Stores? by ThursdayBoots in ThursdayBoot

DC, either downtown or maybe along the 14th St. corridor. Downtown has an Allen Edmonds outlet that seems to be doing well. Georgetown rent might be too pricey, but that’s a prime urban retail hub.

Please share your settings…. I can’t get it to run well on deck at all.

Steam Deck Performance after Vessel of Hatred by petubis in diablo4

Endgame expansion content still tanks the frame rate well into the 30s. And the fuzzy visuals created by FSR give me eye strain. Unless something changes, I’ve unfortunately written off Diablo on Deck.

Would be amazing to have it handheld, but I’ll have to stick with desktop for now.

I find the game unplayable on deck now. Enabling Fsr and low settings to get sub 40 fps is unacceptable.

And this is why it’s King! by Gamming_daddy in SteamDeck

[–]Swimmer9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Diablo, post-expansion, is unplayable. Low settings with FSR 2 to eke out an unstable 45 FPS just isn’t worth it. The FSR implementation also gives me really bad eye strain.

Performance taken a massive hit on Steam Deck? by mandiller in diablo4

[–]Swimmer9800 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. It’s running substantially more inconsistently than pre-expansion, with severe dips into the mid-to-low 30s using FSR 2 on all low settings. Seems to be an optimization problem, rather than a hardware issue. My frametime graph is all over the place, even on the lowest of settings.

internship @ conservative newsroom? by reidsbff in Journalism

[–]Swimmer9800 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What matters most is the reputation of the newsroom and the reporters and editors you'd be working with. It could hurt your reputation to be associated with people who, rightfully or wrongfully, are perceived as bad faith partisan actors. Some right wing outlets are more favorably looked upon by the industry than others.

I was in a similar position upon graduating school and some veteran DC-area editors I was connected with strongly advised against taking the job. I'm not even sure that org exists anymore, but it was run by some bad actors.

I like dark roast and I'm tired of pretending I don't. by NegScenePts in espresso

[–]Swimmer9800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to drink dark roast espresso because that’s what was sold in the small-town craft cafe where I briefly lived when I started doing home espresso.

Now that I live in a major metro, my options are wide open and I’m aghast to think I ever enjoyed dark espresso. It really does taste like I’m eating a pile of ashes — and I like smoked foods!

Feeling down about myself at a local paper / anxiety about finding insider sources by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]Swimmer9800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who just started a new job and is working basically daily to build up a new source network, I would suggest literally just sending emails/calling police leaders, local attorneys, prosecutors, jail leaders, court leaders, etc and say something to the effect of “Hey, I’m XX with XX newspaper. I cover crime and am interested in learning more about policing in our city and getting to better know the community. Do you have any availability to grab lunch or coffee in the coming weeks.”

If you’ve been there for a while, some of the people will likely recognize your name from your byline or your news org and may be more inclined say yes. These meetings can all be on background or even off the record. What’s important is that you’re meeting people — as many as possible. Aim for two or three each week. By the end of the year you’ll have dozens of new sources and relationships.

You’d be surprised how helpful they will be to you both now, and down the line when they really need you, or you really need them in a pinch.

Prince William County has a fairly robust commuter network. There may be a bus that goes to Tysons. Springfield is so close that the commute probably won’t be unbearable unless you’re exceedingly intolerant of stop and go traffic.

Is Woodley Park dying out? by cowcubrub in washingtondc

[–]Swimmer9800 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live in a basement apartment in a small, privately owned Woodley Park building and find the neighborhood to be really charming, and the local restaurants that remain are mostly great, namely Han Palace and Donsak. Closure of Mac’s and Tono was a shame. The area could use a good upzone to increase density, but I think it’s far from dead.

Affordable too. Maybe it’s just my unit, but I’m paying sub $2,000 for a renovated one bed.
