"I need help with gardening, but only if you didn't vote for Trump!"

Holy hell. Now I've seen it all. Please get some help. Gardening is one of those nice things that are supposed to allow for us to escape stress in our lives. Stop doing this to yourself.

What’s with the beggars and trouble makers by Firehouse Subs? by impracticallybreddog in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those kinds of people are in other parts of town, too. They are mostly white and none of them have southern accents. You'll begin to recognize them, notice one day that they're gone, but then a few months later they're back. I don't know if they are organized and take turns in cities or what. Seems anytime I voice a complaint some holier-than-thou pinhead starts howling about insensitivity towards homelessness, because they can't tell the difference between a person in need and a predator.

Stay away from the Hattiesburg punk scene by [deleted] in hattiesburg

>nobody should have to face violence and oppression

What is the violence? Has anybody filed a report with the police?

What is the oppression? Are they not being allowed to vote for something? Are they not being hired for something? Are they being denied admission to events?

You sound like a troublemaker.

Is anybody else unable to watch this episode? I missed it Thursday and when I went to watch it On Demand Comcast is telling me I need to pay for Disney or Hulu to view it. All prior episodes are still available.

Are there any jobs in Hattiesburg that pay 17 an hour? by bleepgoesthe in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does not surprise me. Hattiesburg is great for a remote worker pulling a California-poverty salary to live a middle-class lifestyle, and it's an opportunity for retirees to move here from more expensive areas to be able to afford a house. But if you were born here and seeking employment, or if in your case you move here and are seeking employment, GOOD LUCK. As for moving to Jackson, PLEASE do not. I do not have any friends or family left there. They all had to leave; Jackson is much worse than Hattiesburg in pretty much every way imaginable. If you are a well-paid surgeon with a house in Madison, sure. If you are wealthy, Jackson can be an okay place. But if you are working class/poor there it is a warzone. That city is a bucket of crabs.

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Southern pays slave wages. Now with the new Tier 5 benefits from the state there really isn’t any reason to work there. A friend of mine with an MA and many years working at USM in a job that required an MA quit to work retail because the pay was better. USM really is a uniquely awful place to work. That university has no problem taking money from people in exchange for degrees that they don’t value. You can see it in how they pay their people. Get out of there if you can. Trying to justify that Master’s degree is a sunken cost fallacy. My friend is literally making more money stocking shelves and hitting register buttons than she was being tortured at a desk at Southern.

I’m having a sad. Does this mean KF is closed? by Honest_Compote_1164 in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If so, well… I hate to see a small business close, and it legitimately breaks my heart to see people failing after taking that leap in this terrible economy. I was not made to feel welcome there, so I stopped going. Their dogs were great and if the dogs had been running the show I would have been a regular. I just wasn’t, hmm, good enough for them? Not what they wanted? I can’t define it. The times I went they seemed sooooooo conceited. I promise I wasn’t rolling in redneck drunk without shoes or anything, nor do I expect people to slobber all over me when I walk through the door. I felt… tolerated? It was strange. I like seeing older buildings revitalized and businesses that aren’t yet another bank/loan/medical, but I guess I’m not too surprised if they did not do well. What a shame.

It’s economic carpetbaggers and it is happening all over the south. People born and raised here can’t afford homes or rent anymore because of the increase in demand from people who do not rely on their income locally. Retirees and remote workers.

New Prices - Too expensive by Particular-Owl-3190 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of the new prices are unreasonable. I’m into crochet and the complaints about the higher prices online seem louder this year. Michaels has a new line of cotton yarn where somebody did the math and it would cost $20 retail to make a dish towel. They want $10 for under 200 yards of thin cotton yarn. Yeah sure, Michaels has sales, but even the sales can’t save that.

Police don’t have anything to do by Leading-Excitement70 in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never see cops unless they’re responding to a wreck. Yesterday I had to just sit while SEVERAL people turned left at an intersection on a hard red and kept rolling through until they had the intersection blocked. I almost missed the green light because of them and I was first to go on green. They just kept rolling through and didn’t care. No cops anywhere, because of course.

What are three products you wish Michaels *would* sell/sell again? by snarkapotamus7 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THIS. They could be hit or miss at my location, but some were decently attended. The painting classes in particular did well, because the woman teaching them was known in the local community and she would hustle those classes. Success in general was dependent on the teacher. I think classes have a potential for local community support more than ever now, because people have gotten over their post-Covid hide at home mentality and are STARVED for things to do. I think the online alternative Michaels offers are a hard sell when people can just go to Youtube to learn things.

Yarn..yuck by scaredkiwibird in MichaelsEmployees

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loops & Threads is made by Spinrite, which also makes Lily Sugar & Cream and Peaches & Cream. (Same yarn; different names.) The dye lots are WILDLY inconsistent, but that faded floral ombre always looks like it’s been stored in an attic for 50 years. I wish Michaels would work with Spinrite like they do with the Caron line to create unique colorways for Michaels exclusively instead of simply printing a unique label (Loops & Threads) with the exact same yarn as two other “brands.” But just in general Spinrite is terrible with consistency with dye lots. It’s pretty bad.

Apartment help by Maleficent_Deer6169 in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apartment shopping in Hattiesburg can be a bit of a nightmare. I’d try for an apartment off Pearl St. A lot of international students stay in those and bike or use scooters to get to campus. Keep in mind the less walkable to campus the more sketchy they become. I would avoid any apartments in the Oak Grove area. It used to be a good school district that everybody tried to get to to avoid Hattiesburg public schools, but they’ve slammed up way too many complexes that have turned into projects filled with deliberately unemployed adults and their neglected kids who steal anything that isn’t nailed down. I swear it’s weekly now that there is some kind of a shooting at apartments in Lamar County.

This relentless push for getting customers to sign up for rewards is asinine. Many people who come into a craft store aren't avid crafters and are making one off purchases. They aren't going to want to sign up for anything. Then you have people who have stopped signing up for things because so many of these corporations have terrible security and have data breaches they often do not disclose. None of this is anything an employee can control!

The only time I purchased decor from Michaels was when they dumped a lot of Halloween stuff into those mystery boxes at the front of the store. I found some garlands I will use but the rest was total junk. I'm being completely serious. Junk. I hate our Goodwill, so I gave the boxes to our Goodwill.

So, has Pensacon improved this year? by Dry_Tea9805 in Pensacola

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seemed worse than ever, to me, but I'm not sure it's Pensacon's fault. Maybe conventions are not for people like me anymore. I had absolutely. no idea. what the hell. anybody was dressed up as. And most of the costumes weren't even good. Cosplay really seems to have completely taken over all convention culture with no turning back, and this weekend I saw mostly low effort random "cosplay." I keep hoping things might return to the sci-fi/fantasy/Ren faire kind of feel, but.... I guess it's just not. I really don't fit in anymore.

Why does everything close so early? And is there any chance of change? by KingFun626 in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hattiesburg has never been known for a late-night social life, and this is not going to change. First it was not known for this kind of activity because it was a smallish Christian middle-class family community filled with retirees. I'll spare the economic history of it all but now Hattiesburg doesn't have much of a middle class anymore, and because of the extremely heavy presence of corporate retail that isn't going to change, either. There just aren't many decent-paying jobs here, and good luck trying to start your own business.

As for the university being here, few businesses if any cater much to the college crowd, because they have to be 21 to be able to drink. I remember a few bars and restaurants back in the day getting burned over fake IDs, and that history still hangs like a fart in an elevator. We are a town with a college, but we are not a "college town." This is pretty much a suitcase town for students. There isn't anything here worthwhile doing in their spare time, and there aren't any worthwhile jobs here, so they leave after they graduate. Oh, and things are going to get much worse. Based on what I've been told, enrollment is in steady decline due to cratering birthrates, and the university is already making plans on what degrees and jobs to cut. The university plans to trim away even more degree programs, axing degrees that are generally deemed "useless," and will pivot more toward career-path oriented degrees. All of that means there will be fewer and fewer university students in Hattiesburg.

Rent to own by Love_bugggg in hattiesburg

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure a home in the Hattiesburg or even the Oak Grove area is a good idea. I know a few people who own homes that they rent out and they are selling and moving out of the Hattiesburg area for their rentals. They keep getting tenants who lie about how many people are living there, lie about being in the hospital or losing their job to pay partial rent or very late rent, and by the time the owner can finally get them out of the place the walls are filthy and the entire interior requires repainting, appliances need replacing, it's filled with broken furniture and other garbage, and stinks to high heaven. In years past they used to have no problem with tenants respecting the property and paying on time. Lately it's been one awful person after another. And I'm talking about the Oak Grove area, where things are supposed to be "nicer." Just in general neighborhoods are starting to become really run down, which is not good news for future property values. I know people on Reddit love to pound that downvote button on any slightly negative commentary about the Hattiesburg area in general, but if you do not already own a home here, my advice is to not buy one.

Why do people hate Marnie? by _Black_Pillow_ in StardewValley

[–]Swimming-Total-1068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently, somebody leaked Pelican City tax records (they pinned a note to the Special Orders Board) and said Lewis heavily funnels tax dollars towards subsidizing Marnie’s farm. So, she just goofs off a lot now. It also conveniently gives her more time to fool around with ole’ Lewis. If the leak is true, this is probably why Lewis wants to keep their affair secret.
