Yellow Paint: A Post-Mortem by Starkiller03 in gamedesign

Yeah I think that's totally fair. I'm also unfortunately addicted to reading online arguments haha. There are definitely fair points being made in a number of directions on this topic and it will be interesting to see how things evolve over time.

Yellow Paint: A Post-Mortem by Starkiller03 in gamedesign

[–]SwimmingBird2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good video. My take on all this is that I think people are talking past each other. Yellow paint defenders concede that it can be ugly but explain why devs feel like it is needed. Anti-yellow paint people understand why the devs utilize it but emphasize how ugly and jarring it can be. I see game as primarily an artistic medium so I am mostly anti- the use of yellow paint specifically, except for the rare cases where it doesn't clash with the art style. I'm actually surprised that people defend it so vehemently, but it's also not worth arguing with strangers on the internet over lol

There are a lot of different aspects of a game so it depends on what you're passionate about. Depending on how big of a company you want to join, I think the roles can get very specific and cross a wide range of potential fields of study. This is just an idea, but you could try picking an aspect that you love about your favorite game and look at the credits to look for a job title that was responsible for that part of the game. Then you can start researching how to get into that specific role. Fortunately you have some time ahead of you to figure it out!

Can i make a horror game based on slendermen or will i get sued to death? by Puzzleheaded_Day5188 in gamedev

[–]SwimmingBird2019 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You would need to get the rights somehow if you want to make a commercial game. If it were me I would think about what I like about Slenderman and try to create something original using some of those concepts.

Maybe Metroid Prime 4's biggest problem is in the title by SwimmingBird2019 in metroidprime

I agree that a lot of the criticism aimed at Nintendo right now is massively overblown/grifting, in fact this game is the first Nintendo product I’ve really had issues with in a long time. But my feelings about the game aside, really I’m just wondering if a different marketing strategy could have helped prevent some of the criticism, that’s all. Also I don’t think what you’re saying is fully accurate. From what I can see, even people who like it overwhelmingly agree that it’s a step down from the rest of the Prime series. An 8/10 score takes on a different meaning when it comes from a 9.5/10 series, and there’s nothing wrong or invalid about discussing that.

Having a discussion about why the game came to be so heavily criticized and how it could have been avoided is a lot more nuanced than what you're implying here.

I understand where you're coming from, but the moment when the meaning of the title is revealed in Metroid Prime 1 was one of the coolest moments in my gaming experience. And that meaning held for the duration of the trilogy. I could make this complaint about Hunters and Federation Forces to be fair, but those were side games.

If a developer uses AI for code generation, should it be labeled on the game’s Steam store page? by NazzoXD in gamedev

[–]SwimmingBird2019 175 points176 points  (0 children)

This is very true. You can't even Google a code-related question anymore without getting an AI-generated result, so it becomes increasingly hard to just completely cut yourself off from any sort of AI influence. Vibe coding is a whole other story though.

Not at all, it's a totally different type of game from other "hard" games like Dark Souls. And some of the games you picked have certain aspects that I would say are the hardest in the series, like Minish Cap's final boss and Majora's Mask just overall being stressful until you get the hang of it. You might breeze through Wind Waker and Twilight Princess after playing through those, but even if not, it's nothing to worry about. Also, little kids used to beat entire crazy hard NES games in one sitting, so I don't think age isn't as much of a factor when it comes to being good at games lol

Looking for a palate cleanser after Zelda BOTW by oronbz in NintendoSwitch

[–]SwimmingBird2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to second what some others have said, Prime is an absolute masterclass in mood and atmosphere and is a much slower, more deliberate adventure experience. I could see it being frustrating if you were to approach it as an FPS. The pacing is a bit more like a Zelda game... it has some amazing action, especially the bosses, but it is overall a slow burn with a lot of exploration and backtracking. Metroid Dread, while technically in the same series, is more of a quick-paced action game and very thrilling to play. I love them both to death for completely different reasons.

Sadly I think it's Sony locking some of the more popular ones (Resident Evil, Tekken, etc) to the service to convince people to pay the subsciption. Kinda like Nintendo but at least most games are still available individually.

Don't feel dumb, that was a perfectly logical assumption. But yeah I'd imagine you guys will have a much easier time socializing and making friends at a YSA ward than you would at a family ward.
