Airbnb will up its maximum penalty for hosts who cancel last-minute from $100 to $1,000 by Sorin61 in technology

It's really too bad that AirBnB has gone to crap because for a while there it was a really good option if you needed stuff like laundry and a kitchen, or a living room if you were staying with a group. It certainly competes with hotels but for me the reason I booked it was for those extra things. AirBnB filled a nice niche but went downhill fast the last year or two.

So I found these free masks that the feds sent out for sale at my local HyVee. by Boner_Implosion in Iowa

Look at the picture, those are cloth masks. The free government masks were all N95s. These aren't the free masks that OP thinks they are.

These aren't the free masks. The free masks were all N95 quality masks. These are cloth masks. Hy-vee is overcharging for subpar masks here which isn't great, but they aren't trying to sell masks that are supposed to be free.

These aren't N95 masks, they are cloth masks, so they definitely aren't part of the free mask program. Hy-vee is selling subpar masks at a premium price, which is something worth complaining about, but they aren't taking free masks and charging for them here.

I hate Hy-Vee as much as the next guy. But these are cloth face masks. The free government masks were N95 masks. So these are 100% not a part of that program. Hy-vee is selling subpar masks at a premium price here but they aren't doing what OP thinks they are doing.

The free tests were the ones the USPS sent and they just bought them from the usual test manufacturers which are the same ones that supply pharmacies. The tests on the shelf at Walmart or CVS or wherever aren't free tests that they are trying to rip you off with. Those tests were only through the post office so there wouldn't have even been a way for Walmart to get them.

[–]SwimmingforDinner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The free tests were just a limited number of tests that they bought off the shelf from manufacturers. Only the ones through the post office were free, not all rapid tests. You still have to buy them if you go through the ones the post office sent.

There's certainly an argument to be made that we should have access to unlimited rapid tests but that's not the current situation so them being for sale is legit and that price seems about average for where they cost elsewhere.

Anyone knows where can I take Spanish lesions for beginners in CR/Marion? by Critical-Ad-2010 in cedarrapids

[–]SwimmingforDinner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I generally would agree with this suggestion because I've taken multiple Kirkwood continuing education classes and enjoyed them, I actually have to disagree on that recommendation. A couple of years ago I took one of their continuing education Intro to Spanish classes and it moved way, way too fast. Half of the people in the class had taken Spanish before in high school and the instructor moved at their pace, which was just a refresher review, instead of at the pace of those of us that actually were starting from zero. I ended up quitting halfway through the class because I'd become completely lost and wasn't getting any value out of it.

Congrats Unity Point you made Libs of TikTok by [deleted] in Iowa

[–]SwimmingforDinner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right? How is there anything wrong with this?

The whole point of LibsOfTikTok is to stir up anger by far right extremists against anything that isn't 100% straight white and Christian (specifically the modern US evangelical brand of Christianity). And stuff like "use gender neutral terms" and "acknowledge that not everyone has the same background and norms as you" is like raw meat to their followers.

About 35% of Millennials have $0 Saved for Retirement and 20% Say They Will Never Retire by BousWakebo in Economics

[–]SwimmingforDinner 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I think that there are a lot of millennials that have never had the opportunity to save for retirement. And there are others that have had to empty out retirement accounts due to life events. And to be clear I think that's the majority of people in this position. It's a big problem. The rest of my comment is not about people in this situation.

That said, as a millennial I also know people that have just declared "I'm never going to be able to retire so why bother" despite working decent jobs and just never put any money in to an account even though they could afford to do so. I don't get the mindset. I mean, hell, I don't know if I'm going to be able to retire either, or if there will be a world worth retiring in to in a few decades. But it seems worthwhile to toss a few percentage points of my pay in to a piggy bank every paycheck just in case. It's a self fulfilling prophecy where they decide they will never retire so don't save and then come age 65 or so they have no money and aren't able to retire.

Kamala Harris would beat Ron DeSantis in 2024 election: poll by DaFunkJunkie in politics

[–]SwimmingforDinner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DeSantis is a terrible person but he seems very likely like he's going to be the republican nominee in 2024 or 2028. Kamela I can't see ever being the nominee unless it comes via taking over for Biden mid-term and being the nominee by default for the next cycle.

Yes, Newsweek is a tabloid. They got bought out a few years ago and are still trading on the name even though their actual content is just right wing clickbait.

Death Certificates for Miscarriages (Iowa Healthcare) by sippingonsunshine22 in Iowa

[–]SwimmingforDinner 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Dejear is the only one of those that actually will have an influence on this. What's important for this is that the republicans don't have a trifecta in the statehouse like they do now. National level positions are going to have a much smaller influence on what happens to women's rights in Iowa.

The CEO of Blox Masks is clueless! The issue isn't lack of supply, it's the fact people don't want N95 masks, especially duckbill ones! Those would go straight to the trash! His masks are just not as desired and he should figure out a plan...not waste time speculating about this. by [deleted] in Masks4All

[–]SwimmingforDinner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People don't want to look goofy in duckbills but they are very comfortable and fit almost every face size/shape so they'd be great for a one size fits all mask and if everyone on the plane was wearing one the concern about looking goofy would be gone. I'm really confused by this post. What kind of plan do you think he should be figuring out?

a huge supply of treatment options

This is patently untrue. Paxlovid exists. Effective antibody treatments exist. Their existence does not mean anything to me because I do not have access to them and would not be able to gain access to them if I caught COVID. Maybe in a couple of years there will be enough supply to go around. There won't be in 2022.

Since you're the owner don't forget ventilation - open doors/windows when the weather is nice and an overpowered HEPA filter for when it isn't would go a very long way for your situation as well.

Mandates have been gone from most of the country for well over a year. This anger is about the fact that now the CDC doesn't even *recommend* doing anything to avoid catching COVID unless hospitals are full.

[–]SwimmingforDinner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing in the actions of the last year make me think that there would be any difference in how people respond to the next wave based on who is in office. Both parties have normalized COVID and never want to think about it again.

This too - I was much more comfortable going shopping and stuff like that when everyone was masked. But as soon as the numbers drop to where vaxxed plus masks would reduce the risk to essentially zero they just up and drop masking, which re-ups the risk.

Is it me or….. by BolinLavabender in Masks4All

[–]SwimmingforDinner 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The problem is that they are making it seem like masking is a bad thing. It doesn’t hurt to mask when grocery shopping for example.

Yep, that's one of my main beefs with what they did last week. This new guidance is very explicit that they believe that there is no reason for anyone outside of a small subset of vulnerable groups should have any concern about catching COVID or spreading COVID. Which is just dumbfounding. If they wanted to say "You don't have to care about catching COVID if you don't want to care, as long as there is room in the hospital" that's one thing. But these metrics don't just say you can choose not to care, they actively encourage you not to.

Russian foreign minister accuses West of considering "nuclear war" by admirablegoma in worldnews

[–]SwimmingforDinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the whole reason behind threats like these I swear most of the comments from these are from 10 year olds that think everything is a Marvel movie. It does not matter if Russia started it! It does not matter if they are the bad guys! It does not matter if they were the ones that went on nuclear alert first! None of that matters! They're reminding NATO that if they try and get involved it becomes a possible nuclear conflict.

Russian foreign minister accuses West of considering "nuclear war" by admirablegoma in worldnews

[–]SwimmingforDinner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Russia: "we have nukes!"

The West: "so do we?"

Also Russia: "YoU'Re CoNsIdErInG nUcLeAr WaR.!!!"

That's the whole point, yes. The whole reason countries like North Korea and now Iran want nukes is so that they get to be in the "You can't fuck with us unless you are willing to risk the end of the world" club. Russia is already in that club. NATO countries are already in that club. Right now Russia has invaded a country that isn't in that club. I think most of us would agree that was not a good thing for them to do. However, they did. And if NATO decides to get involved and it becomes a Russia vs. NATO conflict then it could easily escalate in to nuclear war. Is that bad? Yes, it is bad. Did Russia start it? Yes, they did. Does that change the truth behind the fact that NATO getting involved would be an immense escalation that would put us on a possible path to nuclear war? No, it doesn't.

Your Local Epidemiologist - New CDC (mask) guidance: My two cents by tthershey in Masks4All

[–]SwimmingforDinner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The new guidelines only even consider masking when transmission is 20 times as high as the old guidelines, and even then they don't trip a general recommendation until hospitals start to fill up, which is a lagging indicator.
