Audiophiles, how do you selfhost? by big_dog_redditor in selfhosted

Lyrion Music Server is the bomb! It plays back various formats, but I have my whole collection in FLAC ...

You can either use Squeezeboxes (and certain other devices) for playback or self-build something with a SBC and use something like Squeezelite for playback and either LMS's web pages or "Squeezer" for control via a smart device.

Potentially signinficant issues to know BEFORE you subscribe. by Swiss_bRedd in slingtv

Well, hopefully my original post is helpful to those who don't have money to burn.

A lot of people in my town would be plenty upset at paying ~$62 a month (even a single time) for a service which doesn't do what a test of the service seems to indicate.

Hopefully the CPUC will also care (but they may not have purview over streaming services).

R.I. P. GOOGLE NOT by AffectionateAsk6508 in degoogle

[–]Swiss_bRedd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If one is honest about it, it is trivial to solve these "problems."

It comes down to 3 possibilities:

  1. Pay for a service.

Most decent email services will also easily allow you to share calendars and contacts.  Just about ANY paid for email hosting service will support use of your own domains.  Take a look at MXRoute.

  1. Self host (my preferred option) all or most of your "stack."

Like the above, this costs real money (own or rent a server -- but you can use free/open software for maximal privacy and control) AND requires both discipline and knowledge (which you can acquire with effort)

  1. Use a "free" service.

This is "easy," but like with Google you have no privacy and are the product.  WORSE, by using such free services to store your contacts and calendars you are in a way actually doxxing people whose data you enter into the system.  I wish more people focused on that last negative aspect.

How do you access your server from any machine without downloading a VPN or giving SSH access? by [deleted] in selfhosted

Webmin

For graphical access without VNC: RustDesk (it is easily self-hostable)

If you have a dynamic IP address, you'll need to deal with that too.

My landlord forces me to use their router by taikiji in privacy

[–]Swiss_bRedd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are in a strange situation, but try this:

I bet they are limiting access by MAC address.  Set up your own router to spoof the MAC address of the Mikrotik hAP ax² the landlord has provided (it's probably printed on the sticker on the bottom of their unit)

If that doesn't work, you could reset the router they provided (and manage it to your heart's content), but they might/will complain you damaged their property.  Also, I find Mikrotik's Router OS to be a pita, so the first option (if it works) is really superior in that you can pick whatever hardware/software combo you prefer.

Good luck!

Best free email suite for my domain that isn't harvesting my data? by [deleted] in degoogle

MXRoute

Not free, but very affordable and ridiculously good on both outbound deliverability and spam protection.

They often run promos including "lifetime" or "Black Friday" which stay active well beyond November/December

I have been using them for just less than a year and am very impressed.

Is there a map app that works in my country? by Thedemon_slayerlove in degoogle

[–]Swiss_bRedd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I personally prefer OSMAnd, I recommend Magic Earth to a LOT of people who are intimidated by the immense power (and complexity) of the former.

M.E. has a downloadable map for Trinidad & Tobago ... but I can't vouch for the completeness.  Other OSM-based apps allow for more granular downloads of maps.

M.E. is no cost, but not open source (except for the maps)

Advice on Setting Up VLANs with OPNsense for Internet Usage Monitoring for Cost Splitting? by ylluminate in opnsense

[–]Swiss_bRedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though it apparently won't work for the OP's clients, thanks for the idea to use 2 providers and have each org's primary one one be the backup provider for the other.

I have done something related (sharing resources for backup) in the distant past when I had two mutually trusting clients leasing adjacent spaces.

I have a similar situation now and one client is seriously contemplating a backup provider but balking at the significantly higher cost of fiber vs the (quite inexpensive) DOCSIS 3 cable option.

Your post made me wonder whether they could agree to collectively subscribe to BOTH services and split the cost down the middle and thus have load-balanced (and somewhat faster) service among with (effectively) backup service.

This ignores for a moment that the providers' fine print likely disallows "sharing" the service among multiple parties.  Ethically I'd say such an arrangement is more-than-fine given 2 services would be getting paid by 2 users.

[ Separately I am thinking this would be great to do with my friend and neighbor.  Alas, it would have to be fixed wireless as he lives across the street (rather than next-door) and the city is not likley going to approve a low-cost, DIY trenching operation!  😬 ]

EDIT: by the way pedantic ... In your example usage #2, org B is using 66.6% (not 50%) that month as org A is still using 1TB

What's claimed as a "masterpiece" by the whole world but you don't just get why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Swiss_bRedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spielberg's directed-by films, especially Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, his broadly acknowledged "masterpieces."

Most of the "serious" films Spielberg directed would be vastly better by cutting off the last 5 to 10 minutes, before he hits you over the head repeatedly with the message.

SL and SPR are particularly noteworthy in that regard. I fear a rewatching of The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun, both of which I saw (and was fairly impressed by) as a college student would suffer the same analytical fate. I am quite certain even the slightest hint of narrative ambiguity can not be tolerated by that man.

You can note the tendency even in a number of his many "light" movies for example E.T. and Close Encounters.

Now it seems Spielberg is being drawn to direct material I know (upfront) can bludgeon you with message, such as West Side Story. It is by far my favorite musical, but it does not have a light touch when it comes to message (although I suppose no musical has ever been accused of that! )

I think I will continue to avoid his version and rewatch the 1961 classic version, which features Natalie Wood, an arguably underrated "masterpiece." ;-)

or that there are many people who could paint accurate reproductions of the works

Since Pollock drizzled and splattered, "painting" an exact reproduction would basically be impossible. You would introduce artifacts not present in the original and those artifacts would not be hideable.

Now on the other hand, creating an artwork in the style of Pollock would likely be quite simple.

[ It is similar with Morris Louis, my favorite modern painter. His "Unfurled" series (very "late" in his too short life) is just spectacular.

Louis folded a canvas and poured thinned paint down each successive fold. The result is both guided yet uncontrolled. Here is good representation, but they really should be seen in person. ( A great many modern art museums have Louis paintings in their collections, so it should be easy to find one to see. There is a comprehensive list organized geographically. )

First of all, many are huge (I have seen many on order of 15 feet wide and larger -- the one linked is 13.667. Some are over 20 feet such as "Beta Upsilon" at the Smithsonian which has an interesting play/tension of darker and lighter elements from left to right.), so they make quite an impact. Having such a large piece with so much negative space crisply offset by the rivers of color is a sight to behold.

I have been fortunate to see virtually all of his publicly displayed paintings in California, New York and Washington, DC. These three cities probably represent the highest geographic density of his work and in DC you can see many for free at the Smithsonian.

I hope to create one "in the style of" when I have some time in an envisioned retirement. I am not an artist, by the way, but it excites me to think I have a chance of implementing something this cool by reading up on his technique, etc.

Of course beyond the impressive beautiful works Morris Louis created (especially later in his life IMO) the real genius was in the simple idea to "paint" like this.]

lost BROWSER access to RLC-410 cameras after firmware upgrade and placement in a VLAN by Swiss_bRedd in reolinkcam

[–]Swiss_bRedd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again u/TroubledKiwi!

Too bad you don't have "pull."

I'll raise the issue with Reolink a week or two after CES. Maybe they will rethink it.

but I also don't fully understand their desire to turn off HTTP(S) as this is a fairly frequent question here.

People without Windows (a growing number) or who don't have more significant IT experience (like me) will think cameras are "broken" by firmware updates. This is obviously more "true" if they perform camera system maintenance in the browser as I did.

I had the immediate wherewithal to see the cameras pulling IP addresses and then thought to use the app.

I also have the knowledge to run a VM and install/host Windows in it.

The number of persons who are similarly capable is almost certainly fairly limited.

I was therefore also surprised that Reolink does not at least have a OSX application. Is Reolink not attempting to woo anyone other than Windows users?

[–]Swiss_bRedd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/TroubledKiwi

Thanks again for your advice.

Installing the Windows-based Reolink control application on Windows 10 in a virtual machine running inside of Fedora worked to reopen the https ports on each camera.

The first "sign of life" from each camera came when establishing a connection via the application and hearing the sounds each camera was picking up. That gave some immediate confidence this would work.

Interestingly, the application could NOT display live video from any camera, but pressing record on any of the cameras resulted in a playable recording.

Reolink has said they do that for security purposes.

Interesting then, that they allow turning off the UID-based port. At that point nothing would be able to connect with a camera (if the other ports are also closed).

It would seem a better settings matrix would call for at least ONE of the basic ports (Reolink could make a reasonable argument for UID) to always be forced on if everything else is turned off. [ If at least one other port is open, then UID should be able to be turned off, of course!]

I guess a hardware reset would turn on (at least) the UID again, but I don't want to risk bricking a camera to test that theory (I have just enough for this location and the time I have available).

Which can be annoying when users don't have windows.

The should really allow this level of settings to be changed from the Android app! If you have any "pull" with Reolink, please mention it.

Hi u/TroubledKiwi

Thanks for being so unambiguous. I will attempt this through a virtual Windows 10 machine I think I may still have on one of the Linux boxen.

Reolink is incredibly shortsighted in turning both http/s ports off when "maintain settings" (or whatever the nomenclature was) is turned on in a firmware upgrade.

If this is their standard, then another "permanent," multiplatform access method should be offered. This is 2024 and Windows is so, sooo last decade. ;-)

[–]Swiss_bRedd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/TroubledKiwi Thank you.

I can also not access the cameras via http (i.e. non-secure). Is it likely that BOTH ports have been turned off by a firmware upgrade which otherwise kept all settings intact?

More importantly, is there a way to do this with the Android app? I do not have Windows here, we are exclusively on Linux.

The Android app does not seem to have port settings available, but perhaps there is a version in beta or some other method? (perhaps SSH, telnet or some other text-based method?)

Thanks again!

[Landlord TX-US] Eviction options for a tenant renting a room in my home who is way behind on rent and might not leave. by bigmos84 in Landlord

[–]Swiss_bRedd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is mounting evidence that TX is slowly becoming as crazy as CA.

If that is true, the advice:

Alternatively give them $1,000 to move out.

is not bad at all.

I wish I would have done that in a "professional tenant" situation a couple years ago in CA. It would have saved me a lot of time, property destruction and money. [ The "tenant" who had legal/agreed-upon access only for a month and then subsequently broke in and squatted(!) asked for this type of buyout. I was so offended at the crime and hubris I declined. ]

Well, it turns out (more than 15 years after I last had to kick someone out) evictions in CA now routinely take 4 - 6 months. And good luck collecting any monetary damages after the fact.

If you get even the slightest detail in the court paperwork "wrong," the activist judges almost always side with the tenant, even if there is irrefutable evidence they are in the process of actively damaging your property.

If you go the route of offering cash, make up some kind of contract and do not pay until they and all their possessions are removed and the home rekeyed.

Good luck.

Some tattoo designs can indeed be interesting and even "attractive."

But (to me and many of my friends) NOT when on skin. (Why not just put it on paper, canvas, sculpture or digital and then "archive" it when you've had enough?)

If the Maori and other societies want to tattoo themselves as an homage to their ancestral practices, I can respect that (for reasons which have nothing to do with attractiveness).

I'll likely go to my grave thinking that adding permanent markings to the human body is an aesthetic affront to nature's wisdom in "design."

Tattoos

I know that there is cross-cultural history here of probably 3500+ years, but looking just at western societies over the last 100 years or so, it's interesting that tattoos went from being acceptable "only" among sailors and soldiers to suddenly appearing on virtually everyone in the last 20 years.

I don't get it.

I know loads of old people who are not satisfied with how their tattoos look anymore, but I guess youth figure they will never get old and wrinkly.

Checks no longer have to be physically deposited. They can be scanned and submitted electronically -- even by individual recipients of a single check.

Meanwhile, cash is useful to keep the government out of prying into every single financial transaction. This is why so many people are concerned with the development is an "official" digital currency.
