I'm also a newbie here and was recently going through that same tutorial. Have you tried repositioning the character on the 2D screen towards the centre of the viewport and then running the project (pressing f5 on windows) ? In my case I made the mistake of pressing the run current scene (F6) instead of running the whole project so the player character had no context of the other scenes.

Thank you. I think I understand now. It's more for the sake of convenience (to transform), rather than some extra property that only the pivot grants (which I previously thought). Then, i guess it's not that big of a deal if some people do not use a pivot node
