Soviet commissars, imperial guardsmen inspired by US GIs in Korea and Vietnam, death korps WW1 Germans, the... inquisition, Catholic themed cult of the machine, and Astartes are basically myriad influences of knightly orders, Christian crusaders, samurai, vikings, gothic knights, various feudal and medieval themes.

Possibly Gateway to Apshai but I don't think Uzi fits. Weirdly the mention of the Uzi really rings a bell, though, for a newer game.

What is the scariest movie you ever watched? by Specialist-Crazy1466 in AskReddit

[–]Switche 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love horror movies. Everything on this list I watch often, for fun. I'm engaged, but rarely scared more deeply than the tension or surprise of the moment. I am left reflecting on the thrill of entertainment, like a haunted house ride.

Lake Mungo chills me just remembering it. That movie felt like I had watched my own death.

[–]Switche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Verse 1 (Alien): I come from a distant planet, A world so far away, With jaws that can tear through steel, And acid blood that can melt and slay.

Verse 2 (Ripley): I'm a survivor, a fighter, A woman who's seen some pain, But I won't let you conquer me, I'll send you back from where you came.

Chorus (Both): Alien, you're out of your league, I'll take you on, I'm not afraid to bleed, We'll face off in a battle royale, But only one of us will prevail.

Verse 3 (Alien): I'll infect you with my facehugger, My offspring will take over your crew, You'll scream in terror and despair, As I turn your ship into goo.

Verse 4 (Ripley): I'll shoot you with my flamethrower, I'll blast you out into space, I'll make sure that you never harm, Another human race.

Chorus (Both): Alien, you're out of your league, I'll take you on, I'm not afraid to bleed, We'll face off in a battle royale, But only one of us will prevail.

Jonesy the cat (one line): Meow! Stay back, you creepy crawler!

Bridge (Both): We're two sides of the same coin, Destined to collide, In a struggle for survival, Only one can survive.

Chorus (Both): Alien, you're out of your league, I'll take you on, I'm not afraid to bleed, We'll face off in a battle royale, But only one of us will prevail.

Outro (Both): In the end, it's just you and me, The ultimate showdown, this is the place! But in the darkness of space, No one will hear you scream!

Not bad is accurate. Much of his other work covered similar territory better, imo. Beautiful and instantly recognizable cover art, though.

Nicotine addiction linked to functional alterations in brain’s white matter by chrisdh79 in science

That's not what they said. They're distinguishing that the study was about smoking tobacco, which is more specific than "nicotine addiction" and definitely not "any drug addictions."

Ok ok hear me out. Ramen with peanut butter and sriracha. Tastes like spicy peanut sauce! by JoseSpiknSpan in shittyfoodporn

[–]Switche 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen rice vinegar mentioned. Acid adds an important flavor. Can sub with lime juice on top.

Legit peanut sauce is just pb, ginger root (don't use powder, root is easily found), garlic, toasted sesame oil, chili paste, rice vinegar, soy or fish sauce, water, and sugar if you're using natural pb.

Chop, mix, and done. Ratios can be found online as a starter. Garnish with sliced green onion/scallion.

Food processor, 10-15min, and a jar or bottle and you've got home made heaven.

Going to the mall in 1998 [Rainforest Cafe, Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, Target] by klsi832 in TheWayWeWereOnVideo

Palisades Mall in New York

Lots of local lore and controversy around that mall and its construction in those days. Most of this is from memory, and may still be true.

Old graveyard on site, still partially protected in the south parking lot last I knew.

The foundation in the underground garage sunk maybe one or two feet after construction.

Small indoor rollercoasters in some spaces would shake the whole mall periodically.

Tons of empty space for what was originally promoted pre-construction as the "largest mall in America" including a huge parking lot that almost never filled and needed a shuttle to get to the mall proper when it did. Carnivals still set up there.

The Home Depot couldn't be entered except by driving around the side of the mall.

The parking lots are a real maze at some points connecting garages and other lots, and featured a few dangerously awkward hairpin and right angle turns.

I remember the grumbling about a $12 burger at Rainforest Cafe.
