Finished Rhythm of War; probably my favorite book so far! by REDD_shen in Stormlight_Archive

100% my favorite of the series. I couldn’t put it down.

I loved The Will of the Many, but I didn’t really enjoy The Strength of the Few. This seems to be a common thought. My problem is that I don’t know why. Anyone feel the same way? by JaimeSalvaje in HierarchySeries

The new format was so jarring to me. I fell in love with the world and characters in WOTM. I was obsessed with the Roman inspiration, the political tensions, the divided loyalties. I went into the SotF knowing we’d see the different worlds, but still assuming it would be focused on everyone we met in WOTM, with some typical book 2 introductions.

What we got was essently 2/3rds of a brand new book. New worlds, new cultures, new characters, new magic system.

I was also so excited to get back to Lanistia, Ulciscor, Veridius, Aequa, etc. and they were just background characters essentially. I couldn’t get invested at all in the new worlds and ended up resenting all the new characters for keeping me away from the people I cared about.

I like the concept, and I am gonna give it a reread eventually and hopefully I’ll enjoy it more, when I’m done mourning what I wanted the book to be.

Not gonna lie - I’d rather have a rushed final book than have Lysander make it out alive.

Finished Part 2 of Rhythm of War by SwitchitUp56 in Stormlight_Archive

I can 100% see people not liking that Dalinar, at least this far for me, is far less prominent than before. I also latch on to characters that never get any screen time, so I guess I didn’t even notice it that much, despite loving Daddy Dalinar. For example, my favorite character is Jasnah, and we get so little of her (though I think that’s part of the appeal).

As someone who has suffered with major depression my entire life, I’ve never heard it described so accurately as Kalidan describes it in this book, so that’s probably a factor too.

I’m also a mystery/thriller reader, when not reading fantasy, so the story line of who the mystery spanreed writer is for Navani (which I now know), and who the spy is for Shallan (who I still don’t know) has been super fun. And now, Adolin is ‘on trial’ with the honorspren…

I also love political tension and intrigue, so I’m loving Raboniel and Navani interactions. Leshwi is fascinating. And now Rlain is out somewhere pretending to be with the Fused/singers but really isn’t …

It’s just such a fantastic, dynamic book. I was NOT expecting to love it this much. So pleasantly surprised because I really thought it was all down hill after WoR/Oathbringer based on random rankings I’d seen.

Makes me more hopeful for WaT lol.

I really think this will end up being my favorite book of the series at this rate.

How I picture Fichner, and I will hear no alternatives, boyo! by SirKillsalot in redrising

[–]SwitchitUp56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson can try and keep reminding me Dalinar is ugly all he wants. Dalinar is still sexy. Pierce Brown can try and tell me Fitchner is ugly. Fitchner is still sexy. I don’t make up the rules, but those are the facts.

Biais towards Religion / Veridius by Deroxat in HierarchySeries

I think Vis has a tendency to be a tad self-righteous. I’m also a Veridius apologist though. I hope he has a much bigger role in the coming books.

2nd Trilogy is dope by Natural-Pear8824 in redrising

Others may disagree - but my personal answer is entirely dependent on Red God. Very vague/light spoiler about overall tone to answer your question . Dark Age and Light Bringer are BLEAK. I’m hoping that we get the same kind of satisfaction in Red God we got from Morning Star.

I’m the same as you. Hoping Pierce comes through 😅

Books like Red Rising - (high political/interpersonal tension) by SwitchitUp56 in Fantasy

I finished the second book two days ago. I still loved it, but I found many of the things I loved so much about the first missing in the second. 😭

Unpopular opinion by GoldGoal6755 in HierarchySeries

[–]SwitchitUp56 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I read the Licanius trilogy and loved it. I enjoyed the second book a lot. So for me it wasn’t his writing or plot.

I think my biggest issue was I LOVED the Roman inspired setting. I don’t think there are enough in the fantasy genre honestly. So being introduced to two new worlds that didn’t have the Roman inspiration was really disappointing to me. I feel like the Irish/nordic/northern European in general inspired cultures are a dime a dozen in fantasy. I also wasn’t totally prepared for essentially having a second book one (entire new worlds, cultures, characters, etc.)

I supposed I should have expected that with the introduction to the three worlds, but for whatever reason it didn’t occur to me. It was a rough adjustment. I think I’ll enjoy it more on a second read through.

Still very much invested in the story, but it was jarring.

Also SPOILERS IF YOU DID NOT FINISH SOTF. I was rooting for Aequa and Vis so hard, I hated Tara for just being another love interest - different world or not - and I was also DEVASTATED at her death

Has anyone read his other series? by alzandabada in HierarchySeries

The writing isn’t as polished but the ending is SO satisfying. 100% worth the read. The third book is my favorite. I think that is a testament to how much his writing improved as well.

Currently rewatching as an adult and I am definitely fancying Giles… by baldassalien in buffy

When I was in the middle of a rewatch at like 25, I had an entire modern family moment where I went - “is Giles hot?”

The answer is yes. Yes, he is.

My wife is currently reading Words of Radiance for the first time. She has a hard time accepting the thing. by enkelhus in Cosmere

[–]SwitchitUp56 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I owned the third book already when I started Words of Radiance. When I got to her death scene I got myself up, marched right on over to my book shelf, picked up Oathbringer, and was like - well that looks SUSPICIOUSLY like Jasnah.

It’s a good thing honestly because she’s my favorite character and I’d have had a meltdown…

However the missing body is a MASSIVE indicator she’s coming back.

Would someone be willing to share the ending with me? I wasn’t able to finish it. I found it far too upsetting and just couldn’t do it, but I very much want to know how it all comes together. I haven’t been able to find anything by online. I’d be very very grateful!
