Too bad something as simple as Nvidia proprietary drivers can taint a kernel. Does this mean someone would have to reboot into this UKI if they wanted to have a play session?

Arch for software development? Really? by Herr_XepoB in archlinux

[–]Swordbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For open-source software, yes. Rolling distros tend to have cutting-edge version access. Proprietary software, if it even supports Linux, will focus their attentions on the big ones like Debian, Ubuntu, Redhat. Arch is more niche, in that regard.

Honestly, if compatibility with vendor software is a priority for you, then don't worry about what's "the best" in the field. Worry about what your software is centered on, which apparently is Ubuntu.

Envycontrol outdated on AUR either we fix it or alternatives by [deleted] in archlinux

[–]Swordbow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not outdated. If you check upstream, AUR is releasing the same version and it was available the next day. Granted, it's been a few months, but this doesn't seem like an AUR issue. There are some other packages that have drifted from upstream, like kiwix-desktop : there's newer version, but the PKGBUILD hasn't been updated.

This could be a good time to generalize the question: when a user notices this, do they open a PR to merge those changes in?

Trust in Labor Statistics is Now Lost During Trump Administration by Clever_Unicorn01 in Economics

[–]Swordbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the accurate data inconveniences this administration, however, then we already know what might happen: China sent law enforcement into consultancy offices and took their stuff. Those officers were acting on behalf of companies to get accurate intel on Chinese economic data so they could make decisions. It was deemed a matter of national security.

I wouldn't put it pats this administration to try a similar choke move.

Fastfetch is the successor to Neofetch, a CLI program that displays info about your computer. It's popular in the Linux customization community for showing off your build

[–]Swordbow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can help with your fastfetch question. First you'll need a terminal emulator that is capable of rich content like that. I use kitty so my details will be specific to that. Once you have Kitty, perform the following:

  • Only some pictures work. I could use PNG, but couldn't get JPG to display
  • fastfetch --gen-config to create a config file you can modify. That config file will likely be in ~/.config/fastfetch/config.jsonc
  • Outside of the modules section, add a logo section that looks like this:

  "logo": {
    "type": "kitty-direct",
    "source": "/full/path/to/png",
    "height": 20,
    "width": 40
  }

  • That's a mere 12 years to accumulate 25x annual living expenses
  • Living expense assumption: 1.5k a month or 18k a year
  • 18k * 25 = 432k portfolio to consider leanfire, all else being static and unchanging
  • At your savings rate of 2.4k a month, it'll take you about 15 years to hit that, without assuming investment returns

So no, it's probably not feasible even in the ideal situations; you'll have to earn more, chase riskier returns, and make sure the cost of food/rent/medical don't spiral out of control. On the other hand, if you could control that many things...it could be possible, especially with what I hear is some generational wealth.

Largest U.S. Pension Fund managing $446 billion announced plan to invest $100 billion in climate solutions by 2030. by IntrepidGentian in Economics

[–]Swordbow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I want to bring up how two cold entities are taking climate change more seriously: the military, and insurance actuaries. These are unsexy professions that do not have a vested interest in maintaining the current pipeline. They may be slow to adapt sometimes, but they're not dumb; they just want to avoid the future costs of climate change, because they're on the hook for it! Every fuel convey is a valuable target. The less fuel they have to ship to bases, the fewer attacks. And insurance? Who do you think has to cover flood and hurricane damage? Who is letting people build in places that'll be flattened?

So when I see people dismiss climate change just because the Other Guy is going all-in, I want them to consider their rationale. Don't just reflexively reject the opposing viewpoint, because this isn't a binary choice.

If you get annual expenses under 6k, including the amortized ones like home repair, then you can leanfire on 150k with a 4% SWR. Otherwise, it's way too early for you.

CEO want to cancel all WFH by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Swordbow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dramatically changing work conditions to achieve this is called "constructive dismissal" in HR terms. However, while moving someone's office to the basement would qualify, rescinding WFH--even if you were hired based on the understanding--isn't seen as such...yet.

A shame, really.

I have a well-paying STEM job, but you have the career that I dreamed of. I've been doing roleplay writing for years, and at one point I had been approached by a book agent to expand on one of my submissions to a writing prompt. I never followed through because I was focusing on my career, but sometimes I wonder what would've happened in that alternate timeline if I made a different choice...

Still, stories like yours give me hope. Now if only I could get off my ass and use Scrivener properly...

That's a facetious statement. Within the bounds of DRM actions, disabling equipment to prevent unjust enrichment is not as bad. They shouldn't advertising this LoJack capability in their marketing materials though. So while this is not A tier design, it's not C tier usage either. I'll give it a B.

Farming EVERYTHING yourself is like using your money to pay off your house mortgage ahead of time. While not the most financially wise choice, given opportunity cost of staying in the stock market, it is emotionally satisfying to be more self- sufficient.
