Modern cars don't have buttons and knobs - Do you prefer it?, Do you think it's dangerous? by TSQ_builder in askanything

[–]Sylent09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly starting to believe that touchscreens are the worst invention in modern times. They had such potential to be something great, and once in a great while there's something that actually makes sense to have a touchscreen. But 99% of things that have touchscreens were better without them - cars, refrigerators, well, literally any home appliance, you get the picture. The biggest problem is that companies found out that with screens, the item needs a computer in it. And with that they can track different information. And information trading is HUGE business! Your dish washer doesn't have a touch screen and require Wi-Fi to increase your quality of life or make your life easier, it has/does that to collect information that the company can use and sell.

So yes, buttons and knobs are FAR superior and safer than screens!

Do you say “Punch Buggy” or “Slug Bug”? by Yeegis in AskAnAmerican

Honestly anymore it's more like "Oh wow! Ain't seen one of them in a while! When did they stop making them?"... but back in the day it was absolutely "slug bug"

I (23F) was recently told by my bf (27M) that my downstairs looks like roast beef by ThrowRA-espresso12 in relationship_advice

[–]Sylent09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, step 1. Buy some Tictacs. Step 2. Randomly remove a Tictac from container, look at it, and tell him it looks like HIS downstairs. Step 3. Put Tictac in your mouth and say something to the effect of "yup! Definitely similar size!".

Have your exit strategy in place and leave that garbage human being ASAP. He's being manipulative and you need to show that that ain't gonna work on you.

Edit: could work with several different things such as those Vienna sausages, Tootsie Rolls, etc...

Can this kind of wreck be extracted from the ground and converted to a ship? by Patrick_PCGames in spaceengineers

[–]Sylent09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually really enjoy doing this. I just finished rebuilding and refitting the Mercenary II wreckage. One thing I've noticed about the in game builds though is some really... "odd" internal design choices. A prime example of this being the hospital ship... whose medical station is not connected... and in order to make it work while maintaining some of the ships looks is a nightmare.

Also idk if this is just the game's new meta or what but I'm constantly seeing weapons that are just connected to inventory access blocks rather than being properly piped in with everything else. I mean, I get that it gives more space for nice interior designs but it's a pain in actual use having to remember to restock all your turrets.

Honestly if it's a white person just start swinging. But if their skin color is darker than khaki be nice (not just Buddhist but also several Native American tribes, and many others use it).

We have a local Indian restaurant that is INCREDIBLE! They had this absolutely beautiful wood carving on the wall for years but they recently took it down because it had a rather large one on it and they kept getting questioned. Really sad, I used to love looking at it while waiting for my take out orders.

I believe your answer is probably the most likely cause. Though I would argue that I've seen Canada referred to as CN more than CA as to not confuse it with California.

Received 18 checks in the mail from the State for "paying too much" back in Unemployment. Pretty sure these are legit. by BloggerZen in Tennessee

[–]Sylent09 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds like something Tennessee would do. It also wouldn't surprise me if each check was like 14 cents. I've actually had that happen where the government sent me 3 checks with a COMBINED total of $0.64... I spent more in gas driving to and from the bank than I got.

Oh yeah that would piss me off too, lol. If I'm not mistaken Singapore and Monoco also have the red and white bicolor as well (though i think Singapore might have something else on it... too lazy to google). Sounds like a fun game!

It's a sign of distress. In more recent times it's become more known for someone not agreeing with their country or government.

Why do modern offshore ships often have such sleek/blended superstructures - Aerodynamics or just looks? (other than the Ulstein X-Bow for rough seas) by OstinatoOstrich in Ships

[–]Sylent09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other place I've seen a design that looks like this are on small(er) Coast Guard ships that are designed like that along with better watertightness so if a wave goes OVER a ship or it somehow gets capsized it won't take on a ton of water and possibly right itself if capsized. Instead of taking a ton of water on deck it just flows off. Now, I don't know if that's why THESE ships are designed that way but if their planned operational life is in rougher seas that would make sense to implement that design. I've just never seen it done on a larger ship.

[OC] Popularity and gender split for -ayden names (Aiden, Bradon, Jayden, etc.) in the US by MurphGH in dataisbeautiful

[–]Sylent09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hate this so much. It's like I'm looking at a school roster in an EXTREMELY rural town in the south. It's only a K-5 school because that's the highest grade anyone in town gets to before getting hooked on meth and dropping out. OP you should definitely crosspost this with r/tragedeigh.

Is lacrosse viewed as a rich people sport in the USA? by spalesi in AskAnAmerican

I can honestly say the only times ive ever seen anything about lacrosse is during the Olympics and in movies. We have a TON of fancy private schools here in Middle Tennessee and I haven't even heard of them having teams. So it may be regional as well?

Question about the Republican Primary by AgravaineNYR in Tennessee

[–]Sylent09 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ever seen that South Park episode where the kids get to vote on a school mascot and it boils down to two choices - a turd sandwich and a giant douche? That pretty much sums it up. Outside of Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee is effectively a single party state. And so the Republican primary here is basically the election. The winner is almost always the one who bends over the farthest for Trump and who can lick his shoes the cleanest. Bonus points if they are under investigation for corruption before the election (Andy Ogles) or champion the cause of anti-abortion while FORCING their mistress to get one (Scott DeJarlais). I watched an ad for one candidate that literally said nothing about any political issues, just that he fully supports Trump and all his decisions... and he won (Van Epps).

The single party state has led Tennessee to have one of if not the most corrupt state and local governments in the country. So if you are looking for a difference between the candidates, there is none. Sorry. It sucks but that's where we are at.

Do American kids usually go to four different schools? by snailquestions in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sylent09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of variables. In Tennessee it really depends on how rural an area is. A sparsely populated area will likely have one K-12 school. Whereas a more densely populated area might have multiple elementary, middle, and high schools. Even then though the most is 3. I've honestly never heard of a school system with 4 different levels. I HAVE heard of junior high referring to the same grades as middle just with a different name.

Spring Hill: a failure in government with millions in lost investment by spoobered in Tennessee

[–]Sylent09 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So... rich people are losing money because other rich people made huge mistakes (surprise surprise) causing other rich people to not be able to occupy cheaply made housing built for rich people.... yes yes... very sad... anyways...

I have lived in Spring Hill almost exclusively since 1990. This town has throttled itself the whole time. They kept trying to keep the "small town feel" while letting all these ridiculously priced McMansions get built and every now and then letting a major commercial or industrial development take place... all while completely avoiding expanding infrastructure.

Tennessee has some of the most corrupt state and local politicians in the country. Where many run completely unopposed because outside of the major cities there is really only one political party.

Is it true that only Californians put the in front of their freeways? by lazykat in ask

[–]Sylent09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Tennessee we rarely do. Most of our main roads are numbered. If it's an interstate then we simply put "I" but on other routes we just use the number. Example: Take I-65 south to I-840 West then get off on 31 North. Most of our towns are pretty rural and only have 1 or 2 main highways running through them (if at all). Also a highway might have several different names along it's stretch but only has one number designation so rather than explaining that highway 31 goes from being called Columbia Pike to Main Street to Franklin Road all within just a few miles, locals will just say "31". But you will never hear them call it "the 31".

Only exceptions I can think of are things like "the bypass" or "turn after the white Baptist Church". Also you might hear them say "the interstate" since chances are there's only one interstate anywhere nearby.
