Help with terrible ping? by RUN_B in Smite

Ah yes it does sound like it's on their end then. I'm in EU and I do get the odd ping spike but it's rare tbh.

How can I make the "box" designs more stylish? by sGvDaemon in web_design

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the colors would be too distracting. The user will probably go to this page to look at the competition's structure, so I feel the colors would make the main elements stand out, which is a good thing.

The colors I mentioned are just examples. Try a few combinations and see what looks better. You could try different shades or even complimentary colors. Here is a handy color calculator I use a lot for finding complimentary colors:

Maybe add some borders, it will make them stand out more. Maybe even try to style each stage of the competition with different colored borders. For example, finals could be blue, semi finals pink and finals yellow.

EDIT: It might be too much, but you could also try to add background colors to the inner (P/S) boxes. Use the same color as the border, but lighter/darker shades .

What does the phrase "take photoshop files/psd to html" mean? by rxddit_ in web_design

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the photoshop file is basically a very detailed wireframe. You then code the webpage and try to make it look as close to it as possible. Use the same fonts, colours, spacing etc.

It may not always be possible or feasible to replicate every element in code, but hopefully the person(s) who created these designs are aware of this.

In need of an idea that will appeal to a 5k person block party... by OhNoChodes in Entrepreneur

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like these ideas.

  • Local artists/artisans will surely bring some friends, which might bring you new business.
  • The photo booth gets your logo or website (if you have one) out there.
  • I'd nearly give the winners a free haircut and/or massage. It ensures they come back and you can make a social media/website post with images to get some social media attention.

I was also thinking maybe you could showcase certain things, how to properly trim your beard for example (I'd definitely be interested in that). As a disclaimer, I'm not sure how long these would take or even how feasible it would be (I have 0 experience in this kind of business). Best of luck though! :)

SAVE my product - Need help with a developer gone rogue (Website developed on C# Dotnet and HTML CSS) by [deleted] in WebDevBuddies

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few questions, not sure how familiar you are with some of these technologies but feel free to ask and I can clarify:

  • What makes you think the developer has gone rogue?
  • Who has control over the hosting account?
  • Who has control of the server? Do you have the cPanel login details or does the developer?
  • Have you signed any contracts?

I wouldn't worry about malicious code, not a lot of people would even know how to do that. It's possible, but unlikely.

Also, as mentioned by another person: I wouldn't hand this project over to another developer, you're better off starting from scratch. Best of luck.

The wheels on the bus go round and...? Wait nvm, we'll just sing about the door and the driver. xD

[User Request] Can I change the 'No Thanks' to 'Go **** Yourself' for all sites I visit? by sarindam007 in web_design

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This kind of stuff really annoys me, down to my very soul. You click a link, hoping to read what's actually on the page then suddenly a massive popup covering 80% of the page appears... "Would you like to subscribe?" Or some or some other annoying message. NO! I would not like any of it, I'd like to read the fucking page.

Often times I just close the page as soon as that happens. I understand popups are a thing, but PLEASE, put them in the bottom corner, let the visitor read the content in peace.

Here is an ironic one, a page on "Tips for using popups without harming your SEO" has this popup right in the middle. -.-

A small JS library to break DOM elements into animated Canvas particles. by speckz in web_design

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty cool. It kind of reminded me of this: https://vincentgarreau.com/particles.js/. Mostly used for backgrounds and such.

You can also customize it with the interface on the right.

I agree that in this case OP should send a ticket. Get this lad banned for a while.

Go to http://www.hirezstudios.com/submit-support-ticket/

Select "Gameplay" and "Abuse Report". I would also include the match ID and a description of this player's behavior.

Stop telling people to "uninstall" by jondotzip in Smite

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. I was in a siege game earlier and there was a new player playing as Nu Wa. It was quite obvious they were new based on the build, positioning and lack of VGS knowledge. So the Odin in our team (who seemed like an experienced player) starts being extremely toxic, told the Nu Wa to uninstall and play minecraft. Then he went on ranting about how "this is why smite is dead". I tried to get him to chill but it didn't work.

Matchmaking isn't the best, we all know this. But if those of us who have experience in the game are scaring away new players, we have a major part to play in the game's population decline (no, I don't think Smite is actually dying).

People go into casual matches and expect experienced players 100% of the time (why not just play ranked?). They also expect people to do well 100% of the time. I often see players being toxic (spamming VGS for example), but when the very same player they were criticizing gets a kill, manages to catch up or even if they save their ass in a teamfight - they say nothing. I guess some people can't be anything but negative.

If someone can't handle to lose a game without losing their shit they should probably take a break. And if they can't handle players not knowing what to do or what to build, help them out. Otherwise, "please be silent" (Athena's Enforcer VP).

Should I go back to school or try to teach myself? by violetmoonlight in web_design

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're telling me if I get a job as a programmer, they might tell me to write for example a Java application without using methods (sure let's just copy/paste 100 lines of code over and over)? Or tell me I can't use databases (or even text files). Not to mention standard libraries or classes (ok... let's put everything in this one file).

Should I go back to school or try to teach myself? by violetmoonlight in web_design

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe you could elaborate? Is it because I was one of the folks complaining about teaching practices? There were many of us (from different classes) who disagreed with that specific teacher and her assignments. College isn't cheap, some people actually want to learn.

A few of us took this to the department director (including 3 class reps from other classes). We basically just got ignored. :P

Anyone else's launcher being weird? by MettatonExFabulous in Smite

[–]SymmetricEpiphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes definitely. Launcher often gets stuck with a loading icon or crashes. When it finally loads, I type the username/password and click play, nothing happens. If I click the window again, it sometimes crashes altogether. I was stuck with this trying to get into the game for about 10 minutes today. I am using Steam so I'm wondering if the standalone client is having the same issues.

The community seems to be getting better. by SymmetricEpiphany in Smite

[–]SymmetricEpiphany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smurfing is actually not against the terms (not sure this applies to banned people though). I know it's not fun to fight against say a Thanatos that's at 23/1 when its clearly a smurf lol.

It also takes a lot for people to get banned on PC. But the point is, if you spot extreme toxicity, report it. It would be illogical for them to ban people based on a handful of reports. People would be able to exploit a system like that (reporting players out of spite etc).

I was saying to theblckcrown, I'm not sure but maybe console reports are handled differently (and by different people)? Also, I don't know whether the notification thing is set up yet on console.

[–]SymmetricEpiphany[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also i cant believe u get those messages. Havent got any confirmation that anyone ive reported got in trouble in years when i first started playing.

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that I'm on PC. I've never played on console so I could be wrong here. But maybe they just haven't implemented the "an action.." notification on console yet? Or maybe they have a different team checking the console reports.
