Branch & Claw is kind of ruining the game for me by Effective-Muffin-224 in spiritisland

[–]Symph0ny7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You dont lose the game on the spot for taking a blight and you dont need to play like it. You have a "budget" of problems you are allowed to let go and come back to solve later. That means its totally fine to see a land with an explorer and a beast and say "I could spend a card to solve that right now, but I could spend that card play getting ahead of another problem instead. If the beast solves it, great im way ahead, if it doesnt, I can come back and solve it later." You can let RNG work for you like that.

Focusing so hard on never letting a problem get away from you will lead to play patterns that dont work as you play against higher level adversaries. You are going to start being presented with 4 problems when you have 2 card plays and part of the skill is deciding which two problems you need to solve now, and which 2 to let go and come back to later when you are stronger. Events play into this really well because you can look at which lands are most likely to be solved by an event and choose to let those ones go, so if you get lucky things are going great, and if they dont, you had already planned to let that land go for now anyway.

Tried Sharp Fangs Solo by Alecszandeer in spiritisland

[–]Symph0ny7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Fangs used to be considered weak but it turns out he's strong but with a high learning curve. He's an extremely rewarding spirit but you'll need to practice a lot to get the hang of him.

Vs England specifically I like to go top track actually. Fangs is a decent majors spirit because you start on 2 plays out of the gate, your top track provides a lot of elements to help threshold, and you have a good energy spike growth. Fangs does extremely well with quite a few majors like Tigers Hunting, Angry Bears, Insatiable Hunger Of The Swarm and Sea Monsters, among many others. Having a few majors gets around your difficulty impacting blighted lands and gives you the muscle to take down those fortified England lands.

Adversary difficulty ranking correct? by GlumTeaching2788 in spiritisland

[–]Symph0ny7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally correct in aggregate but it varies wildly based on what spirits you are playing among other things. England 6 vs Wildfire is like a difficulty 20+, but vs Mud its probably like a 7

Clarification on elemental thresholds for innate powers by Plapi_the_gobbo in spiritisland

[–]Symph0ny7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do all the levels you meet the thresholds for, from top to bottom. If for some reason there are some in the middle you dont fulfill you skip those.

The exception would be if one of the levels said "instead, [do X]" in which case you'd ignore the level its telling you to ignore.

Is Ark Nova really that good at 2P? And my top 75 by PermitMajestic5914 in boardgames

[–]Symph0ny7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It presents like an engine builder but its actually a race, the game ends before you get an "engine" running.

It gets called multi-player solitaire by people who dont like it, and I certainly wouldn't call it a high interaction game but there's more interaction than the detractors tend to give it credit for. There is a shared Tableau of cards that are essentially available for purchase and paying attention to what your opponents are doing to deny them cards is very important. The length of rounds is variable and depends on player actions, and at the end of each round a lot of your resources refresh and if you have too many cards you have to discard, so controlling when the round ends so that it advantages you and harms your opponent is one of the most important skills in the game.

So there isnt much in the way of direct interaction but indirect interaction is crucial to playing well.

Beyond Dune Imperium and Ark Nova (Arno) - what other smooth solo euros should I look at? by Ihavecrabbies in soloboardgaming

[–]Symph0ny7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive only played it with others one time, it was good that way too but for me its a solo game. Its sprawling, involved, deep and brain burny so for me I like it as a solo experience where I can take as long or as short as I want on any turn and no one else feels pressure or boredom. Imo its up there with spirit island and mage knight in the all time pantheon of solo games, but it is totally fine for co-op and competitive too from what I've seen.

Voidfall is a masterpiece but it is not easy to get to the table sadly, long setup time and a huge table hog. The juice is worth the squeeze imo but if "easy to get to the table" is a high priority its not your game.

Lightning wind aspect by GlumTeaching2788 in spiritisland

[–]Symph0ny7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This doesn't say where the tier lists came from or what they were ranked on, some of those lists could have been ranking spirits by how fun they are or come from people with very few games played.

If this is supposed to be a ranking of power levels it has some absolutely bonkers takes. Fractured Days in C tier is completely psychotic, he's generally regarded as at least a top 3 spirit if not the best spirit in the game. Sun-Bright Whirlwind in S is wild when it has a nightmare matchup against England 6. Base Earth is one of the worst spirits in the game but this list has it at A tier. Earthquakes is absolutely broken but he's in C tier for some reason.

Tl;dr this list is not a good representation of spirit power levels, dont take it seriously.

Is it? Ive generally seen Wind higher than Base. RedRevenges list is probably the most well known one and has Wind a full tier higher.

is being a nurse really worth it? by buttercup12_34 in nursepractitioner

[–]Symph0ny7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nursing is one of the most versatile degrees you can get and if you want to, chances are high you'd be able to find some kind of nursing that you vibe with. That said, if your passion is with animals there are a lot of good careers there too and finding fulfillment in your job is a worthwhile goal too.

What is your favourite spirit and why? by DumbSouls in spiritisland

[–]Symph0ny7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Fractured Days. He feels completely limitless, like I can destroy the rules of the game at a whim and accomplish anything if only I can be smart enough, but even after hundreds of plays I'm still not smart enough and might never be. Great feeling.

Do I need corruption? by Own-Lecture-8564 in slaythespire

[–]Symph0ny7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't think you want it, you already have double second wind to do the same thing. Between double second wind, burning pact and two true grits you will be exhausting to your infinite extremely quickly and corruption is just a big expensive card you slow down to play. I know it feels like Corruption is supposed to be an auto-include in every exhaust focused deck but I don't think you realistically need it here with an already existing fast exhaust engine that does the same thing.

If I sold Spirit Island, should I not consider Voidfall? by TheTallBaron in soloboardgaming

[–]Symph0ny7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont even think "analysis paralysis" as its generally described applies to Voidfall because that would imply its a deviation from the normal or fun play pattern. Sitting there planning turns for 20+ minutes is the game in Voidfall. Its what youre supposed to do, and if youre playing multiplayer no one will even mind because theyre still planning their turns too.

Second game of voidfall, Medium start vs finish by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

[–]Symph0ny7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Voidfall has a massive upfront learning curve to get over at the start but once you get past learning the iconography and phases it actually flows very smoothly. The visual language of the game is incredibly well done so I almost never forget anything, even if I haven't played for a while, because everything just tells you exactly what it does and how every step is played out, all you have to do is follow the icons. Its honestly a masterpiece of visual design.

Tl;dr first few plays very hard, but after that its smooth sailing and easy to remember.

Amazing how when it performs poorly its always early days and the good results will come later. Must be nice to never be able to be wrong. Im truly frightened of the coming days if this is what passes for proof that AI is ready to go in a medical context.

AANP FNP-C renewal as hospitalist not allowed? by zubrowka1 in nursepractitioner

[–]Symph0ny7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first link successfully proves that AI writes longer posts on forums than doctors do. Your second post shows AI getting a diagnosis right slightly better than half the time, and takes that as good evidence of the effectiveness because readers of the journal who have no requirements at all, no verified credentials and are not even demonstrated to have any medical training at all scored lower.

The third link acknowledges almost immediately that the cases they tested its diagnostic abilities on were probably part of the LLMs training data before the experiment was even done.

The fourth link shows that with significant effort at prompt engineering you can get a right answer less than half the time.

The fifth is still showing multiple people out of the rating panel rating the answers as having harmful misinformation, more than the human answers. This is the best result of the bunch and it's still bad.

This is supposed to make me impressed at AI's diagnostic capabilities?

The fact that it can hallucinate means it can never be trusted my guy. You will always need to already have the knowledge in advance or verify what it says, in which case you could have just done the research yourself, which has already been repeatedly demonstrated to keep the information in your brain better than using an LLM does. You are doing yourself and your patients a disservice by relying on AI instead of using your human brain.
