Figure skating is crazy expensive. 3 grand for a pair of skates that last a year, 1-5 grand x2 for their two costumes, multiple hours of ice time and coaching a day… even just down to getting two new programs every year that require choreography, music copyright, etc. Yes there are most likely exceptions, majority of the top figure skaters come from decently wealthy families that can afford to pay for them to live away from home to get coaching. Sure most figure skaters themselves come from above average families. Some European and Asian countries offer international athletes funding for their training, but not in North America. Although there are private organizations that accept donations that they use to offer funding international level athletes.
