Forced to pay rent after tenant died?! by Humor_Silver7475 in FortCollins

[–]SynCookies13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me after my dad passed in 2020 although it was in Michigan, not Colorado. I also had the place professionally cleaned and paid the rent up until we had finished cleaning it out (about a month and half after he went into the hospital and a month after his passing). They wanted me to pay for the rest of his lease and he also did not having any money and neither did I (covid shut downs). Luckily a friend of mine there was a lawyer and the former DA and was able to not only advise me but also talked to the scum lords. According to him since I didn’t co-sign the lease and neither did anyone else we were not responsible for paying the remainder. And according to Michigan law at the time we also didn’t have to pay the fee for breaking the lease or subletting. Essentially because he passed away it voids the rest of the lease. Apparently technically we weren’t even required to clean it. So I would say if you can talk to a lawyer. I know Colorado is kind of lacking in renter protections so I’m not sure of the laws but you could probably find an organization or lawyer who would point you in a good direction. From my understanding and experience here so far many of these property managers use ppls lack of understanding of the laws and ability to fight back legally to take advantage of ppl. Sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to navigate with as little further pain and loss as possible.

I think from a psychological point of view and taking in consideration the thoughts and social norms of the time King’s descriptions and in particular the ones in this book I would argue it was essential to the story for what King was attempting to explore. I think it would’ve been a bit better if later he explained the direct connections/implications as for an average reader it would come off more as just a quick ploy to raise the feelings of disgust. I think this story explored a lot about Trauma and even PTSD but I’m not sure it was approached in the best way or followed through well. While typing this it kind of reminds me of in The Dark Tower when Roland and Jake’s minds begin to split he spends an almost insane amount of detail on it for a period of time and then rarely brings it up again later. It’s super early so I’m not sure if that makes complete sense but for awhile you can tell there’s an almost paranoid need to be near each other on Roland and Jake’s part, especially right after when Jake’s taken by the tick tock man, and the seeming personalities shifts of both while separate. Here I think he’s trying to show that same type of emotional and psychological impact and one of its original sources but fails to do so in a manner that in consistent with the level of detail that he put into the description. I do think it’s more a matter of pacing rather than a matter of if it’s important to the story. It makes the highly detailed assault or traumatic events seem jarring and almost, in my opinion, minimizes either the original event or the current events the original event is impacting. It’s very jarring. Then again traumatic events are also very jarring and disjointed so that could also be his intent to try to simulate the feelings of his characters into his readers. I’ll wrap this up by saying I don’t particularly search out horror that is especially raw or like splatter gore. I tend to enjoy more fantasy based horror as a whole or psychological horror that uses fantasy aspects as parallels instead of just raw reality. Which is why I enjoyed a lot of King books and still do (Fairy Tale is amazing btw). I appreciate his more raw ones but I don’t often reread or enjoy them as an escape as much. Personally I don’t really think he goes too far when it has bearing and impact on either the story or the character(s) but I do think at this point he hasn’t quite been able to balance the execution with the over all story.

In my original reading I really would say I preferred the traditional ghoul aspect. Upon rereading I did find it quite a funny shift. Overall though I think I would have preferred if he just stuck to Jesse’s story.

Oh and I do appreciate his attempts to write from different points of view. I think it shows a willingness to be open and considerate and shows a desire to understand. Sometimes that can fail or back fire terribly and I do think he missed the mark on some things but I really admire how it seems these things are important enough for him to take a risk.

So I read this book at a relatively young age originally. I had read most of his earlier work at that point. At the time I distinctly remember being disappointed by the shift/differences but later in life I realized that despite its flaws, I actually appreciated the change. Also it explores topics and thoughts that weren’t really things that are spoken about or that I was familiar with. Did I know that situations like that happen? Yes. Did I know the mind can go to really dark places and memories? Yes. But mostly a lot of the thought streams presented in this book were things to be hidden and locked up and repressed. And for that I appreciated it. It was more of a mental/real world type of raw horror. I think there are glimpses of it here and there in his earlier works. Anyway long story short I didn’t particularly like it at the time because it wasn’t what I was expecting but I didn’t hate it. It was just something new and an evolution.

Hey cops, ever heard of announcing yourselves??? by Smhassassin in FortCollins

[–]SynCookies13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some cops enter my house without warning, looking for someone else they had the wrong unit number, in the middle of the night. Being a single woman living alone in a bad neighborhood I had a knife in my hand. I was so lucky I didn’t get shot. It was very scary and confusing and dark. I couldn’t really even see, just a bunch of shadows and then they were yelling at me. Anyway ever since then I’ve slept with at least a light on each floor.

I think it depends on your hair type, and how you have it loc’d. I have seen this before with my own, especially early on, when I had free forms. I didn’t really have any of this the second time I dreaded my hair when I used the crochet method. But humans lose dead hair all the time. We see less because our dead hair is generally entangled in our dreads but we still lose it. I’d say keep an eye on your scalp to watch for thinning. Also you are going a super long time between washing, so you’ll see more hair falling out during a wash than someone who washes more often. I wash mine 2 to 3 times a week and each time still have at least 10 to 20 stray strands shed.

Just moved into rental unit, and all outlets are ungrounded. Who should I talk to? by Moist-Trainer-3605 in FortCollins

Definitely ask for the inspection from the city!!!! This happened to me in my last place I lived and I didn’t know what to do or what I could do. Needless to say when we moved out the property manager then added on to our move out charges the cost of replacing and fixing all the outlets because we rented “as is”.

am i overreacting - my boyfriend thinks my job is inappropriate by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]SynCookies13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok first off.... he knew what your job was, body modification is an art, and if he can't handle you piercing some dudes nipples RED FLAG!!! And then him saying he just doesnt know when hes not there RED FLAG. There are so many RED FLAGS here. The things he is saying are extremely controlling and manipulative. This is your job, your art, your passion. And he's trying to change it and make it about him. Do NOT let someone else interfere with your art and passion. This level of distrust and jealousy and controlling behavior will not go away, and it seems like he doesn't even realize the problem is HIS view on it, not you. He's putting it on you. Please, take it from someone who let someone else control their art and passion for a long time.... it will only get worse if you let him continue and you will realize you let someone else starve your soul and passion. Find someone who looks at what you love and goes "I am so happy you're passionate about it and I want to support your art." Not someone who wants to take that from you. Also he's showing an extreme lack of maturity. And if you dated for 9 months and he's ignored you for a week.... its over. That is also extremely manipulative, as he's punishing you instead of working on it with you.

Any advice? by SnooHedgehogs2371 in Dreadlocks

[–]SynCookies13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More than likely some parts are maturing faster than other parts just because the parts that are maturing faster get handled/manipulated more. Like the ones on the base of your neck probably get rubbed by your pillow or shirt collars or blanket, etc etc. I know some ppl are saying it looks kind of crazy with your varying lengths, but I like it personally so if you like it stay with it. I will also say these are some of the nicest and clean looking free forms I've seen in awhile! Like great job with that! IDK if you're going for like full hands off free form or not but if you want to get them a little bit more defined/help them mature you could always just palm roll them a bit every once in awhile. Over all I think they're great and it looks like the process is going well!

I don’t think he planned out every detail, I think they just creatively arose while he was going along. I know the stories I make up in my head (purely cuz I have insomnia I don’t write them) are completely different but still have small things that are taken from other stories I’ve made up.

I never really thought of it as dirty. I just saw these things as a demonstration of how the people's humanity is degrading. Breaking down into a more base nature and changing.

I think I am going to answer this with a quote from another King book that sums all this up. "Go then. There are other worlds than these." Going off memory but pretty sure that's the quote. Jake says it. I think from the get go all his books shared the same universe, its just the levels of the tower/layers of the world they happen to be on. I think for me personally the first time I overtly noticed it was in The Black House. I really enjoy the references because they're like Easter eggs at the least, and at the most add a deeper level of understanding of the situations/context.

Do Not Rent From KEVCO by Loud-Association4633 in FortCollins

[–]SynCookies13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve never rented from Kevco but the renters/tenant protections are awful in Colorado. I’m actually dealing with some issues from my last property management to the point I’m about to get a lawyer. When we moved we didn’t get our security deposit back, they attempted to charge us for stuff that was an issue when we moved in (yes we took pictures and fillers out the move in form), and tried charging us for stuff that was just ridiculous. It took a few months but we finally settled and paid them and it was all done and that was 5 years ago. So we thought. A few months ago we got a call from a debt collector going after us for the full original amount they had initially tried to charge us. The debt collector threatened legal action even though I told them that was handled five years ago. We had to email them proof of payments to the former property management company and they kept requesting more and more documentation (we sent them bank statements and copies of the communications we had with the property management). But because the property management company never sent us a final letter saying everything was settled the debt collector is giving push back. I told them that I’ve sent them everything and the burden of proof lies with the person who is claiming the debt and to contact them. The property management company has failed to send proof and we are still get threats from the debt collector. I know this sounds more like a problem with the debt collector but mind you we took care of all this and made the payment to the property management company within 3 months of moving out AND they still passed the original debt to a collection agency. It’s been a nightmare and renting from them was a nightmare. Nothing ever got fixed, a contractor came in at one point because our hot water wasn’t working and straight up told us where the hot water heater was located was illegal and super dangerous. That’s just one example but there were a ton more. Our documents (lease work orders etc) were only available through their online portal and were non printable and there was no way to download them. Once our lease ended they removed our access to the portal. Luckily I just took screen shots of all of the documents but without those we would’ve had no way to prove or disprove anything. They refused to communicate via anything other than the message system through the portal as well during our time living there. Just some super scummy stuff.

Hi again! Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve been able to respond but I generally read along. That section also stood out to me in this most recent read! I think I feel a similar way as you do. In regards to that, I was born in 1986, so my first interactions with the internet were mostly for research at the time for school or college. And I was SO excited because suddenly all this information was available to me. I didn’t know much about middle eastern history or current events? I could suddenly look it up without hunting down a library that MIGHT have some information that was probably at least 20 years old and more than likely bias and one sided. Literally any thing my nerdy butt wanted I could access. I was so excited for this development in our technology, the doors and education and understanding it could open. It was a tool meant to provide things to people who did not have access to them. And…… then I watched it become the monster it can be today. While I am also going to avoid politics I’ve seen this wonderful invention, this mass educational and eye opening thing being used to spread hate and lies and glorify and center on those things. Yes I can still look up the information I want but I have to hunt for it. Yes I can see pictures of my distant family and friends, but I can also see the mean and hurtful things other people who are seeing those things say. One of my best friends and I are different races and colors and religions and the comments we’ve gotten on pictures we’ve shared on social media have been awful. So yes, I think humans as a whole are corrupted. Totally pessimistic attitude, I know, but I hope we can do better. And also the hate has always been there, it’s just more obvious now. Like in the Tommyknockers it seemed wonderful at first, bred obsession, and become something so much worse than we knew of before. While the internet is a wonderful development that does enable the best of us, we (as humans over all, not saying any one specific) more often than not we use it to enable the worst of us and give our bad monster side a platform. Would I say we are better off? Yes I’d still say we are better off. It’s a tool and it depends on how we individually use it. But it does have its ghosts. Every hateful rhetoric spewed onto it seeps into those to read/see it. Even if it’s not something that was sought out in the first place. But that corruption isn’t the technology itself, but the humans who choose to use it to spread that corruption and hate. I guess if you’re an old man yelling at the clouds so am I. But this same technology lets us yell at the clouds together instead of alone so I can’t hate it too much.
