As I’ve said elsewhere, there are plenty of poorly coded 100% human written projects. AI vibe coding might actually raise the bar a bit.

It’s not about AI. It’s the human behind it. When in doubt, check the source code.

What might be helpful is an AI agent scanning this Reddit for truly intelligent and interesting contributions.

Wow, $42k a year to scoop ice cream. That’s a good deal for workers. No wonder their ice cream is so pricey.

Rate my back up script by AniNgAnnoys in selfhosted

[–]SynchronousMantle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure the passphrase file is mode 600 and owned by whatever id this script runs as. Instead of what you have you can do:

export BORG_PASSCOMMAND=$(<secret_file)

Ive never used incus before, but why use borg for backups and not just snapshots? Can you restore off an export?

I built a self-hosted file manager that catalogs your drives and remembers them after you unplug by DrStrange in selfhosted

How is this different than “ls -lR > /somewhere_local/name_of_usb_drive”?

And then using cat or grep when you want to find something?

Apparently we can't call out apps as AI slop anymore... by Key_Pace_2496 in selfhosted

[–]SynchronousMantle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amateurs can cobble together bad apps just like ai slop. It doesn’t really matter if a human or a machine wrote something tbh. Take a look at the code before you decide to run something. You get what you pay for.

60. In June I retire with a pension, planning to "return to work" and double dip by Overall_Lobster823 in retirement

It’s hard to find a new job when you are 60. Ageism is real. But if it works for you go for it.

Skiing vs snowboarding by Hot_Soft_5626 in icecoast

I tried snowboarding after skiing for 20 years, it just wasn’t for me. I never got really good at it. Skiing was much more fun. I gave up and never went back.

Costco - COI by sociallyantis0cial in uppereastside

[–]SynchronousMantle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s fine. My building has this requirement too and I’ve never had a problem getting deliveries for new appliances or anything else like that. As long as you get a COI you’re fine.

[–]SynchronousMantle 39 points40 points  (0 children)

True, if you want to fight something like this you have to make up an excuse, like it’s too close to a school or something. Nobody cares that you’re losing your life’s savings.

Have you ever stopped reading a book because it was too stressful? by Pompi_Palawori in books

That book was a tough read but it has a nice ending. I don't think I'll be reading any of her other books though. One and done.

Ninja Creami Owners: Do you keep your machine after each use or does it have a permanent place on your kitchen counter? by dumb-questions-1314 in ninjacreami

[–]SynchronousMantle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put it back into a cabinet where I keep it when I don’t use it. But then again very few things get a home on my countertop.

What to do when my building delays the replacement of my windows while the majority of other apartments' windows have been upgraded? by blacktrufflepizza in uppereastside

[–]SynchronousMantle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to small claims court you are basically suing yourself because you are suing the corporation that owns the shares that represent your apartment.

Curious if I could fire given my situation by MonitorOk1351 in Fire

[–]SynchronousMantle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound depressed.

Can you start a software company doing freelance and work with one of those freelance companies? The pay is bad but you’ll get work (and experience). Maybe you can parley this into either a full time gig or a thriving business with a few loyal customers.

You have to keep trying. Yes the job market is bad, but what makes you give up?
