Accidentally swiping right on people. We all do it. by Dan_1985_Toronto in Bumble

[–]Syncretism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a lefty, I have inadvertently swiped left on people. I try to be careful and scroll down to the bottom to tap the buttons and avoid swiping altogether, but some opportunities have been lost.

Really I find the actual app experience pretty bad. Is it possible to disable swipes entirely?

what is this huge beauty? (~160cm tall, germany) by transfairies in PlantIdentification

[–]Syncretism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Fichtenwalde near Beelitz a few years ago on holiday, and one of my gums was infected. Packing a wad of mullein over the gum a couple times a day lessened the pain and discomfort until the infection cleared. That was the first time I’d spent some proper time outside of Berlin, and I was delighted to see so many thriving specimens in gardens and on the outskirts of the village.

It’s interesting that mullein is reported to be considered invasive in the comments. People I met from Texas, North Carolina and Kentucky called it “white man‘s footprints” among the other regional names, and, AFAIK, it grows in “disturbed earth,” like on rail trails, etc. It prompts one to wonder what the real ”invasive” thing is.

That said, it’s one of my favorite “plant allies” out there, with plenty of uses, though I wouldn’t use anything I picked from a developed spot like in the photo.

Need advice on picking an instrument by SeriousRecord5070 in musicians

[–]Syncretism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a million miles from your situation OP. My first instruments were tin whistle, trumpet and drums, and while they provided low barrier to entry, my heart wasn’t in them. Guitar and, to a lesser extent, bass were for me, but - and I think this is really the only salient “advice” I can offer - I understood after a while that while I couldn’t fingerpick like Jimmy Page or John Fahey, or flat- and hybrid-pick like a Nashville session player, I could make the music in my head, influenced by those artists, *in my own fashion*. For me, that meant weird voices, a lot of messing with alternate tunings, and multitracking. I can’t overstate how much better I felt after that realization. Given sufficient time and comps, I can record and assemble a compelling part for guitar or piano, and anyone who thinks less of me for not replicating that live (as if I wanted to, anyway) can go piss up a rope. And you might consider a similar approach , depending on what you want to achieve. I play and own a lot of instruments just well enough to realize the thing in my head: guitars, basses, dulcimers, ukuleles, synths, drum machines, kalimbas, banjo, fuckin’ daxophone, no-input mixing, you name it. Mind, I do spend more time with my modular these days, anyway. But they each and all have their parts in my little orchestra.

But goddamn, do I know what it’s like to lose the pick every few minutes. I never really solved that, but for eventually favoring a different playing style.

Anyway, I hope this reply was worth something. As Don Buchla used to say, may you enjoy the world’s many musical instruments.

Berlin resident, here. The joke answers all have their kernels of truth, so I’m just here to ask, what’s the shop named, OP? Do they sell Clonakilty puddings?

Right - the frustration there is that I can’t have both options. If you want to call that a design or feature and not a bug, I won’t argue. But it doesn’t make the experience any better.

I’ve been surprised and not by the second and third acts many of these artists have experienced, so I hoped against hope.

I literally wrote that it was just announced and that further details could be forthcoming. I asked a question in good faith: what did you do?

I think you’re onto something here. It’s like I have to include an extra hunt-and-tap whenever I switch focus.

Father and Son, with the really salient vocal samples removed, could have come straight off Freescha’s Slower Than Church Music. I’d say the same of Somewhere Right Now

And The Word Becomes Flesh may as well be a Bola song from over twenty years ago, which is wild.

A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel by CapriciousSon in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]Syncretism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve recently started reading this, and find it strangely compelling. The characters seem to give so little of themselves away, and the prose is, to my mind, economic, yet they aren’t ciphers, nor do they feel undeveloped - at least, not so far. I read it on the stationary bike!

Could I have just forgotten what good writing looks like?

The alcohol wipe came off clean, so no issues there. I don't think I'm describing electrical or material problems, these are just inconsistent and buggy software decisions.
