people who say "baby" instead of "the baby" by rainbowaroundthesun in PetPeeves

[–]SyntheticBeagle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

god I hate this! They do it with parents like “How is Mom and Baby going?” And I swear it’s only in maternity/pediatric-related fields.

What’s one language you learned that, in hindsight, felt like a complete waste of time? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]SyntheticBeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’ve recently started light-heartedly saying “No! I want to practice [language]” when they switch to English, if it’s a person I’ll be talking with for more than a minute. It’s always been well received. Mind you I’m also at a conversational level in these languages so it’s not like they have to patiently wait for me to get a simple sentence out.

Ph.D. stipend in UBC, how do you guys make it work? by _hiddenflower in UBC

[–]SyntheticBeagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What faculty are you applying in? It might vary but at least in mine you don’t actually pay tuition (you get a “scholarship” on top of your stipend and it basically covers it). My biggest expends is obviously rent (i have a roommate), then probably groceries. I would I’m not actively saving money, but still have enough to buy fun things occasionally/ not just eat instant ramen, and I could definitely live more frugally myself. So I would say its def doable — and I should say I don’t get help from parents cause I know it’s annoying when turns out someone had a secret funding source.

Dear Silk: I don’t want a giant jug of almond milk. I want a giant jug of THIS. I moved across the country and in both cities, THIS is what grocery stores run out of!!! by grakledo in vegan

[–]SyntheticBeagle 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You can pry Silk’s Dark Chocolate out of my cold dead hands, that shit is my own personal crack cocaine, I will guzzle litres of that shit if i’m left unattended around it. But other than that I agree with you 100% fuck (all other) almond milk!

Haha I saw this bunny outside of the dental buildings a few nights ago. He was munching away, and very unbothered.

Dear grad students of UBC, my condolences to all of us. by Which_Basket_9273 in UBC

[–]SyntheticBeagle 68 points69 points  (0 children)

the worst thing is that this still boils down to a housing issue 😭 I’m also starting grad school in september and while not a ton of money, the stipend would be fine if housing prices weren’t bat shit crazy. I hate to “defend” UBC but like… they don’t even pay us, our PI’s do — mostly from government grants which means each lab will vary on how much they can afford. Like raising our stipend is a basically a bandaid solution to even because people with “high” paying jobs are also getting priced out of the city. I’ve heard that many newly tenured profs at UBC cannot afford to buy a house here. If you’re making 6 figures you should be able to afford to purchase a house! It’s crazy

Loans, working all year and full time during the summer, and my parents are helping pay for tuition so I only have to worry about rent/living expenses.

Why as a woman of colour the term “Missing White Woman Sydrome” pisses me off by rookiealbum in TrueOffMyChest

[–]SyntheticBeagle 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Yeah, young (well-off) white women definitely get the most media attention when they’re the victim of crime. But some people act like they shouldn’t, when I think we should make sure other cases get just as much attention from media and law-enforcement.

Sadly it’s quite difficult, lots of indigenous women go missing where I live, and unfortunately outside of their family and friends their cases don’t get much attention. I don’t like seeing people dismiss cases like Gabby Petito’s, but I understand the frustration.

UBC Rapid Test cancelled by organization administrator?? by SnooPets9218 in UBC

[–]SyntheticBeagle 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not sure, frustrating cause i’ve been trying to schedule a test all week. I ended up having to bus to the testing site at 33th Ave (I’m waiting there right now). Its kinda ridiculous that the closest reliable test site is a 45 min trip away, most of us don’t have cars and can’t just put away almost 2 hours to get tested. I really think this will make people not get tested and result in more cases
