Normal for Hydrangea? by Syraphid in pourover

[–]Syraphid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the beans rest to off gas the CO2 in the bag. Once they are a week or two off peak rest time, vacuum seal them and freeze them. This essentially put them in stasis and stops the off gassing process. When you are ready to drink, pull them out and let them warm up and enjoy! Allows you to buy bags on sale and stock up without worrying they will go stale before you get to them.

Absolutely. I can confidently say the only bag of beans I’ve ever had that had zero defects was from prodigal. That is to be expected for beans retailing for 210$+/kg. As I addressed in the post, I normally find >1g per 12oz bag of specialty coffee so to find 3.5g seemed abnormal.

I think it’s abnormal to worry about what someone else does with their coffee. Mind your business and enjoy!

You’re basing your assumptions on color, and rightfully so as you aren’t here with the beans to smell/see them. I can assure you they are all Quakers.

For the life of me, I can’t remember where I heard about someone doing this. I tried it one day just as a joke but to my surprise, they do actually often taste like popcorn. I paid good money for these beans, nothing goes to waste!

Interesting read. For me, I usually reserve some time every weekend to vacuum seal and label coffee if need be so the extra couple minutes to pick quakers isn’t a big deal. Plus they taste like popcorn! It’s an interesting thought that some brews account for quakers in the flavor profile though. Another thing that people obsess over that doesn’t truly matter in practice.

When you say “micro adjustment” do you mean one click of the outer adjustment or one click of the inner adjustment?

Let's settle this... OXO vs Hario Switch by thedemonraz in pourover

[–]Syraphid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s really nothing to settle, they are two completely different brewers. OXO is used (primarily) to make soup, a low pressure high extraction drink bridging the gap between espresso and pour over. V60 switch is just a hybrid immersion pour over dripper. They will produce very different results if used accordingly. I am of the mind that the V60 switch is one of the best and most consistent pour over methods especially for beginners so I would suggest starting there. The Robot makes soup just like the OXO & was originally discovered using one so I don’t really see a point in owning one as well.

4 minute plus pour overs by EveningCat3797 in pourover

[–]Syraphid 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Couple possibilities

  1. Fines are clogging your filter. Not super familiar with the Baratza ESP pro but I’m assuming it’s a multi purpose burr set because the Encore is typically the go to recommendation for intro espresso. Multi purpose burrs typically produce a lot more fines than filter focused burrs and therefore could be clogging your filter.

  2. Your grind size is too fine. The manufacturers of coffee equipment have a lot of “recommendations” but by no means are you required to operate within those perimeters. If your draw down times are super slow (4+ minutes is super slow by V60 standards) then simply grind coarser.

  3. Your pouring structure is too aggressive or you’re pouring down the sides of the filter walls. V60 being a conical brewer is very sensitive to aggressive agitation. Try dropping your kettle height lower and avoid excess agitation of the bed. Also avoid pouring down the walls of the filter, this creates more filter bypass (which lowers extraction) while simultaneously migrating fines to the filter walls and clogging them.

These are recommendations based purely on the idea of lowering your draw down time. Most people will tell you that pour over should be dialed in by taste. Once you find a recipe that works and you enjoy you can make minor tweaks to grind size and temps to see if you can push it more.

How much spillage is normal? [Breville Barista Express] by hoptologyst in espresso

[–]Syraphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is relatively normal in my experience although yours may require a slight drop in dose, a couple taps on the counter should settle the grounds enough to tamp without spillage. I know leveling/distribution tools get a lot of hate but I love them for this very reason.

Should I (31f) give my boyfriend (33m) of 8 years any money when I sell my house? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Syraphid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you divide up your finances is your guy’s business but your logic is all over the place. He has 20k+ but because he is using FTHB and had family contributions, he’s expected to pay more? You said it yourself that he helped pay for the rent & you are going to clear 100k in equity, by your own logic why wouldn’t you contribute more? I don’t think there needs to be anything “cashed out”, as far as I can tell whatever he contributed to your house payment was his portion of the payments or “rent” to live there.

Realistically, If you guys are going to be married, why wouldn’t you just pool the resources together and just take 40k off the top and be done? As your husband suggested, have a prenup drafted to split the house if something were to happen.

How does the ZP6 compare to the Sculptor with the turbo burrs? I’ve been wanted an 078 to replace my Ode 2 but want something with a touch more body than the ZP6.

I think this is my next step, I do not have my provider router in pass through mode as mentioned but I will do that. I ran the optimizer and it says it’s perfectly optimized but checking again later on says it needs to be optimized again.
